bike to run... sloshy stomach!

The past couple of bricks (both short!), I've noticed that when I start my run, I feel sloshing in my stomach.  If I put my hand right under my left ribs, I can actually feel it sloshing around in there.  I'm not talking a lot of fluid either.  I just got back from a 1-hour easy bike where I drank 1 bottle of Infinite.  I started the run and felt this right away.  The same thing happened on Monday!  Now maybe this has always happened and I never heard it because I had my music playing:-)  But this week I'm running without music and I heard all this noise!!  Should I stop drinking for the last 10 minutes on the bike or something??

  • Have you listened to the nutrition webinar? The link is in the wiki and also in a thread on the same subject. It deals with this issue and shame on you if you don't take advantage of it!
  • Carol- there are guidelines out there in the wiki and webinar. But for EVERYTHING, it is a GUIDELINE not a RULE and you need to find what works for you.

My experience has been that if I drink steadily on the bike but stop 10-15 minutes before the run, then it is fine. But I have had some really hot days for the BRicks and despite all the drinking, I felt under hydrated for the run. At those times, I did chug 8 oz or so of drink and then start slow to let this settle. I can feel it sloshing around but not cramping. It has not stopped me. I prefer that there NOT be sloshing, but I don't want to cause other problems by letting myself get too dehydrated.

Of note, I do not use the Infiinit with protein on short workouts as it does digest slower. If I am using Infinit with protein, even a little bit, I stop 30 minutes out. For a short BRick, I stick with carbs (Heed, Perform) or water. That may be another consideration.
  • Paul, yes, I did listen to the webinar and took pages of notes:-) I don't recall anything about a sloshing stomach though but I suppose I should listen to it again... Michele, I plan on using Perform on Saturday (IMNY), but have been using Infinite on some short rides just to use it up! I did not have any cramping, just sloshing so I'm not too concerned. I agree that perhaps it is the Infinite with protein; my second RR was with Perform and I did not have this issue. My first RR was with Infinite and I had cramping (and also had too many calories!). After listening to the nutrition webinar, I think I have all my calories, carbs, and sodium figured out ... hopefully! Glad I switched to Perform!
  • Is the sloshing hindering anything? Causing any problems?

Absorption rates, etc are very personal. I can drink a ton of fluid on the bike and having a full stomach usually doesn't bother me on the run.

  • Not really hindering anything. Hard to tell 'cause I've only been running 30 minutes off the bike, but it's not cramping or anything. Just feels (and sounds) very weird! Hopefully on Saturday the crowds will be so loud that I won't hear it:-)
  • I'd plan on having some sodium on hand in case you need to get those fluids through your stomach.
  • It also depends on what you are drinking on the bike. Carbohydrates and sodium, to a point, will help your body absorb the water.

  • This happens to me as well. It is really annoying. Mentally, I'd prefer some slight pain over the sloshing. It happened at Muncie 70.3 (Cut to an Olympic because of the heat). On the 30 mile bike portion I drank A LOT and maybe got in one salt tab. Still, come run time, slosh, slosh, slosh. Between that and the heat exhaustion I had my PW of a 10K run. Run/Walk that is. The sloshing was there from the beginning. If I figure out how to avoid this, I'll tell all. I know I will cut back on water near the end of the ride and drink smaller amounts along the way.
  • I am guessing that you nailed it with the "music". You have probably always done this and are just now noticing. I like to end my liquid intake on the bike abour 4 miles out (12 minutes or so) after I take on my last calories before the run, usually a Roctaine and a Salt stick, and have no issues as I get going on the run with excess fluid. Race day is a hard day to fix this, I would go with what you know and maybe work on it during your long rides/RR in the future.
    Good Luck!
  • @James, you shouldn't be drinking water on race day...only sports drink. If you are using concentrated custom infinIT you might need to revisit it. Sloshing is fluids that can't get out of your gut. It could be either (A) water with low sodium so it can't go anywhere, or (B) water send there by your body b/c you ate stuff that's too carb heavy and it can't digest. Either way, it's not stuck in (A) with no way out.
  • I use a concentrated bottle of Infinit and water with Nuun to dilute it. I've found that adding the Nuun really keeps me from getting a headache after and seems to help the water absorb faster. I don't think you need all sports drink, but having some electrolytes in there can help it absorb.
  • I just saw all these posts that I didn't even know were here! Thanks everyone. I still do not have this race nutrition figured out! Grrr. I am going to post something in race execution about my Kona RR yesterday. I'll take the sloshing stomach over stomach cramps any day!
  • The first thing I think about when I see these posts is this: not enough sodium. Upping sodium intake is usually the final link in IM gastro-success.
  • I've got the same problem. Happens a lot of times when I just go to run...Same place as you Carol - under the left ribs. And it's LOUD. My old running partner used to make fun of me. Today the sound kind of kept me company while out in the wee hours of the morning image I'm going to try upping the sodium and hope that will silence the slosh.
  • I would suggest using a sport only drink as well.

I know what you are talking about as this has happened to me too. Since I changed up to sport drinks , think Gatorade or IM Perform, the ingredients in these have allowed the liquid to digest through my system. For me that has stopped the slosh.

Also, the new fluid regime I use passes through me allowing me to pee so the electrolytes and sodium are doing the trick getting into my blood stream and carrying out the waste as it is supposed to.

I'm talking as I've used this all summer long now running in crazy hot and humid conditions. The blends of ingredients alone have worked for me under harsh conditions with no need to add extra sodium as in salt sick or another brand.
