Sport drinnk volume = water volume??

Going to try the concept from the webinar that says NO WATER on the bike. So I am going to replace water with a sport drink. Two questions:

1. Can I replace water with Infinit mixed with water (i.e. is that considered "sport drink")? Or should I try Gatorade?

2. Do I replace the same volume (in ounces) of water with sport drink? (I usually drink at least 48 oz of water per hour on the bike.)

  • You can still use Infinite, but do not concentrate it. Mix according to directions. You should still drink the same volume, if this works for you. Then see where that puts you in terms of grams of carbs and sodium. Add Powergels, Cliff Bloks, and/or Powerbars (the old fashioned kind with the gold wrapper) according to taste and what is needed to bring up the total carbs/sodium to the recommended levels.

The Core Diet people are not big on protein in the sportsdrink, so if your Infinite mix has it, you may want to drop that element in the future. On the webcast they had not issues with Infinite, and the ability to dial in the needed carbs and sodium is nice. The draw back is you can't get it on the course, so you are fooling with powders or carrying extra bottles instead of living off the land.
  • Question 1. Yes

Question 2. If you need 48 oz of fluid you need 48 oz of fluid. Glad I only need 15-30 per hr depending on the day. The big thing will be trying to figure your calories. 48 oz of fluid is 6 servings of Perform x 70 cals per serving that would put you at 420 cals per hour if you drank perform off the course.
  • For my last race, tried to do a coach Patrick type thing.    185 lbs.

(2-3)  20oz bottles of perform per hour.    two bottles if cool.    three bottles if hot.

200 calories in addition to that per hour.   gels.   bars.  bananas.     concentrated infinit mix (1000 calorie bottle).

    worked well for me.

  • Hmm, just found out my race only hands out water on the bike course. I guess I will just have to ignore the "no water" experiment for now...
