Decision Point: Weekend's Rides

My choices, a few weeks into The Plan, for the weekend (5h/3h rides):

- ride my tri bike that currently has a chain that is officially stretched, and a R Derailleour cable that only gives me circa 3 gears on the cluster due to a  nearly-broken and badly frayed cable,

or

-road bike.

Major factor: I need to start in putting serious time in the aero position, in earnest.  But the thought of riding an (approximately) five-speed bike is already making my legs quake.

Will tally votes at 7am tomorrow.

  • I'd go roadie. Cant imagine riding a crippled bike just for the aero bars.
  • Roadie, but take the tri bike to the shop....snapped a cable this year about 3 miles from home and couldn't keep the chain on the rear derail. It took a long time to get home even though it was 85% downhill....NOT FUN!!!
  • Ride the road, get the tri fixed ASAP.
  • X5 on the road bike. I just measured my chain tonight and it's going to the shop after tomorrow's ride.
  • well...what did you do Mr Tallo?
  • ...and start pushin' for letting your weapon get in such a sad state!

  • Road bike. probably good for the 10-15 extra watts that weekend!

New drivetrain is now installed on the tri bike, so all is right in the world. But it's definitely taught me a lesson to Chill The F--- Out at least once a season, and just ride on the hoods, no PM, for the fun of it.

    Now it's back to work.

Oh - addendum - road bike was great until the non-drive side crank arm came off.  Flash forward to me tightening the bolt roadside with a hex-shaped rock.

  • You now win the award for Bike Maintenance
  • Oh wow, that makes me feel slightly better about myself for snapping my chain twice in the past few months because my rear DR was all jacked up.

  • Are we supposed to be tightening the crank arm bolts on a regular basis....The arm fell off?...WTF...

Glad you didn't crash as a result Dave....
  • Nate - No, the loosening crankarm bolt was a known problem with certain FSA cranks, but this is (and ought to be!) very unusual. The fix - Loctite-ing the threads - has remedied it for the last number of years, but I think it's finally time to get something else.

  • HEx shaped rock? Is this Halligan or Tallo????
