Adjust VDot or not

I just started the Intermediate Marathon Plan week 13 for the final push of the last 12 weeks to the marathon. As the intensity increased, the last 4 miles of the run, I could not hold the paces and was off by 1 min per mile and more ( time) towards the end. SO , up front I did good ending I folded. Should I readjust my Vdot now or tough it out and see what cooler temp have in store for me. My nutrition was spot on.

  • I would keep the same Vdot. Do the best you can with the paces and your body should settle in to them. 12 weeks is a good amount of time to see improvements in fitness ie. hitting the paces.

And.. just a note: When I used the plan I never hit the finishing paces.
  • Thanks B, got I got the plan at MN for a good sale price. I have a decent level of fitness going into this so I jumped on the final 12 week portion. I just recounted my weeks I have 14 left , that may make the difference too.
  •  Just another supportive view........I don't know when you did your vdot test....but if like me...my last vdot was done in late May just before kicking off my IM Louisville race training block....sooooooooo....my bet is that like me...your ability to hit the same paces in late July August has been severly impacted by temp/humidity...even though my fitness has not changed really.....and ....in 12-14 weeks you will see a swing back to more moderate temps & conditions as well....so I would leave your vdot and see how things progress.

  • David - Coach P also answered your question on the MN FB page.
  • @ Joe, Thx for the reply ! I'm using a Vdot from a Duo Athlon I did , a Sprint like a 2 mi , 18 B , 5k so that was in June. With that I think I'm about spot on.

    @ Brenda , Thx I saw it.
  • Hi David,

Looking back at this posting string from about 6 weeks ago. Did you adjust the Vdot paces for training runs? Or has the cooler temperatures this past couple of weeks helped?

  • No I did not adjust my Vdot back then even in the heat and humidity. I further went on to improve my Vdot number and trained up to that number potential. With the heat it was a challenge but I adapted to the conditions after a few weeks and then excelled onward... I raced this past weekend with a PR too.
Thx for asking, are you doing ok ?

  • Thanks,
I WAS having issues in the heat on training runs holding the specified paces. Even though Vdot is from second week of August in the Heat. Over July and August, I improved my 5k time twice @ 30 seconds each time in the heat each time.... Maybe jumping the training zone times back then was too big a move all at once? and compound that with the heat? Now that the temps have come down I feel pretty good, but now I am thinking I need to trust the training paces and use as a speed limit. A couple times recently on longer runs I think pushing to hard in the last few miles cause it feels good at the time is gonna hurt me more than it helps.
Just looking for a little insight, and nice job at the LBI 18 miler.
  • Thx John, you will see, if you stick around here for the full seasons that WE ALL suffer from the heat in training and racing. There is alot to be said about pushing too hard the last few miles on the bike or run that is you end up digging a hole for yourself down range as it will catch up to you in over achieving. You can however get away with it in the swim. Stick to the Plans you chose cause they all have tests along the way to keep you from getting to use to your paces. See ya around.
