Display Setup on 310xt?

I did a search and didn't find anything.  So, quick question....

What do you have on the display for your 310?

Here's what I set up.  Now, I'm new to this one, which is why I'm asking, so if I need to change a field, please tell me the logic behind it.

Bike:   Top Left- Watts,  Top Right- Speed,

Bott Left- Total Time, Bott Right- Distance

Run:  Top- Pace for Lap, set to auto reset every mile (?)

Bott Left-  Total Time,  Bott Right-  distance

Any other tips on how to use this thing efficiently?

I don't plan on using it on the swim.

Anyone keep it on the wrist during the bike?  Is it that big of a deal to roll the 310 to the topside of my arm when aero?

  • Chris - lots of options, esp w/ 4 pages avail per sport. I set mine to scroll with certain data common to all the screens I am using, and in the same place on all the screens.

For bike - my common fields on top row are 3s avg watts and 30s avg watts

For run - my common field is Pace [note - I find the instantaneous pace to be stable enough for my purposes.]
  • alright, I'll look into this auto scroll thing.

by 'common fields', do you mean a field that does NOT change while the others are scrolling?
  • Yes. It is the same Field in the same Spot on all the screens. That way, if I want specific data, I can wait for the scroll to happen. Otherwise, those items are always there.

I wear mine for the swim -- under the wetsuit if it is a wetsuit race -- and haven't had a problem losing one {knock on wood!!}. But I don't use a quick-release, just the standard band. When I am on my bike, I rotate it to the inside of my wrist as I find it much easier to roll my arm out a smidge in order to see the screen rather than taking my hand off the bar to roll my wrist inward.
  • I only use mine on the run and have lap pace, heart rate, lap cadance, lap time.
  • @Joe- that wrist placement is exactly how I was going to wear it on the bike. My arms are practically rolled over anyways.

@Peter- I find it interesting that you don't watch total time. But, I suppose following lap time keeps you in that 'box' that R & P coach about. I may try that.
  • Here's a question that's not display related...

I did a run this morning, have uploaded it into GarminConnect already. Now, how do I get it into WKO+ and Strava?
  • Although I don't have a 310,for the run my watch is set to : total time, current pace, ave pace (for total run), distance.
    I enjoy this setup....
  • I prefer to have more screens but fewer displays on each screen - that way the numbers are Biggs and easier to read while your arms are moving during running. Also, I find it help to have both current pace and lap pace displayed for the run. Since i walk the aid stations this helps me know how fast I am currently going to make up for the walking time.
  • For running I have 2 screens, one for totals and one for current info, 3 fields, set to auto lap @ 1 mi, and distance alert @ 0.5 miles (for paceing)

    total time
    avg pace & total dist

    HR
    avg pace & lap pace

I almost never look as lap pace until the x.50 alert due to the unpredictable accuracy of pace over short distances - esp less than 0.25 miles.

Rarely look at overall time/pace/dist but sometimes helps to see the big picture.

Typically run by pace but use HR as a governor to stay in my box pushing up hills or dealing with heat & dehydration.

On the bike just 1 screen: Time, Ave speed, Dist but I never look at it but have Time alert at 15 minutes for nutrition & Joule interval reset
  • Chris-

For me the easiest way is to just download the .TCX file (in the Activities list screen on Garmin Connect across the top bar the option for Export ...click then click TXC file)....then upload the file from my computer into TraininingPeaks,  WKO or Strava...

I do it this way particularly for WKO...it seems when I synch/load directly between Training Peaks and WKO something odd happens with the data...

  •  Hi Steve,

I have a 310 too and am interested in the idea of using a time alert on the bike.

How do you set that up?  Do you have to download some sort of workout or can you set it up directly from the watch?

    Thanks,

    Erik

  • @ Erik - I dont have my 310 here at work so I'm not possitive on the menu/screens but IIRC when in Bike mode, go to Training > Alerts > Time Alert - mine is set to 15 minutes. I have my Garmin set to Vibrate Only so no one else has to listen to me beeping.... Then anytime you are in Bike Mode, it will vibrate every 15 minutes or what ever you set it for. Works great to stay on plan.
  •  Anyone have any issue with batterlife during Ironamn?  If I have it on let say 1 hour prior to start...will it last 12-14hrs?

  • JL- I've been told that the norm is to turn it on, acquire the satellite, go do the swim, hit T1 and put the watch on, and there will be plenty of battery to get thru your race! Especially since you're all done by the 9hr mark!

Battery life on the 310 is excellent.  Probably 18+ hours.  12-14 hours would be no problem.

I accidently tested that out in 2010 the day of the Texas 70.3.  I turned it on about 20 minutes before my race started (let's say 7am for arguments sake).  I did the race, forgot to turn it off and spent the remainder of the day and most of the night in the hospital.  It was on my wrist the whole time.  I finally turned it off at about 12am or 1am.  It had been on for 17-18 hours and still had about 10% battery life remaining.
