Thinking about a race wheel

Need a good front wheel without paying a lot?  Good sale happening now on SRAM wheels

The grey S80 for $504 is a great deal.  Same wheel as the Zipp 808 from a few years ago (pre-dimples).  I've raced on the red one for two years, and love it.

Comments

  • Still wheel related but different subjext; I have been racing hed 3s. Doing IMAZ. I do/can not buy a disc. Is there any real benefit to renting a disc or just sticking with what I have?
  • Can't say for sure, but Andy Coggan once wrote

"... I did two back-to-back 40k TTs using deep rear wheel vs. a disk, I went just as fast in the 2nd ride despite generating ~20 W less power. "

  • Mike,
I have several friends that ride the S80's and they have nothing but good things to say. I have no personal experience as I use either a Hed H3 or a Hed Jet 6 in the front.

David, Hed's website has a drag chart comparing all their wheels. The H3 is slightly better than the disc up to 5 degrees of yaw but the disc is better for anything past 5 degrees.
  • Mike:

I am in talks with Karbon about a deal with their wheels.  I think you have P's set and are testing them out now?  What are your thoughts?  Love to know.

    Here is their site:  http://www.karbonspeed.com/products/

Lemme know if you are interested and I will see about a discount for you.

  • John, I'm racing tomorrow, and will be putting the wheels through the ringer after that. I will do my best DC Rainmaker imitation for a full write up, will require a few weeks. PM me for additional details/discussion if timing on discount discussion is more urgent.
  • I've noticed a precipitous drop in the price of SRAM S80 (front) wheels around town. First they were on sale at Nashbar for under $400 shipped a about a month ago (their 20% off sale). Now they are on eBay for about $400. Is somebody out there dumping excess inventory?
  • One word, Steven = China

Lotsa wheels hitting the market in the 50mm and 80mm range for cheap.  From what I understand they are all made in the same 6 block area someplace in China.  They come with decent components, too.

It was bound to happen.  Gonna eat into Zipp sales, for sure.
