Regional Skills Camp Kickoff

Folks, PnI have been working behind the scenes here to create complimentary “regional” experiences for the 2013 season and beyond. Until now, most contact with us has been at races or epic training camps/rallies...with the shift to a “Key Race” schedule for 2013, we are looking to find other ways to connect with you, our members, and new recruits during the OutSeason.

You can see the full announcement below, but we need some help! We are looking for host cities / local champions to help us identify venues and eventually spread the word.

Time commitment is a few hours of lead up prep, and then support on the weekend itself. You will get FREE access to the event itself as well as one month of FREE membership. If you are interested, please check the list of requirements below as well as regional areas...if the stars align, please email enracedirector@gmail.com and we’ll get things started.

Location Requirements:

  • Pool space, minimum 4 lanes for about 2 hours. Permission to videotape.
  • Classroom Space, ideally with chairs power to to presentation.
  • Gym / Space for running clinic (not mandatory).

  • Rich, just sent an email to link, but curious. Do you mean Ottawa, Ontario, Canada for one of the clinics? or is there an Ottawa CA?
  • Ottawa, Canada, but only if you can promise California weather

  • Looks fun!  I'd be interested in helping facilitate the Seattle area one. Sent an e-mail per the instructions and will stand by for direction, sir!

  • Cool!! Love SoCal
  • WOW!  Emails are coming in already!  Very cool.

To help me keep things straight . . . if you are interested in being a local champion, please fill out this Google Doc with your info:  http://tinyurl.com/d48bssd

I will ping those folks on the doc as we get things finalized.

    Thanks.

  •  Sorry John - our messages crossed. I just sent you a message. I will fill out this form as well.

    Hey Jenn,

I'll definately plan to attend so let me know if you need a "deputy" to help with planning image

  •  Hey Coach, If you consider the CNY region I can help. The CNY tri club is 1500 members (2nd largest in the US I am told) Use to be a 300-400 member group. When Iron girl came around they offered free 3 or 6 month membership (don't remember which) to get ready for it, and then they could sign on after that. Club had a huge retention rate and now has a ton of club training events.

    Mike, what is CNY?

  • ;Shannon: Of course!  Let's buddy up!

  • John - for Florida in January the best location is the National Training Center at Clermont. They have the pool, gym, track, and classroom facilities right there. I'm not sure what they charge, but there are a lot of tri-camps Jan-Mar in Clermont. The Canadians, Aussies, northern US, and pro's all go there for the weather, hills and facilities. MLK weekend in January is probably the best time. If the camp is one day, then folks could leave the bike at home, travel Friday, just do the swim/run clinic Saturday, then do Disney on Sunday...head home Monday and only miss one day of work. Or they could bring a bike, and on Sunday I could take them out to the Buckhills and Sugarloaf mountain for some PAIN. Just depends on whether this is a swim/run camp or a tri-camp. The limfac is the rental cost for those 4 lanes at the NTC. Pool is outdoors but heated. If a cold front comes through, then it can be quite cool when you aren't moving. Alternative 1: I could check with my subdivision pool (SCY, outdoors, heated to 82 yr round) and see if they would rent it and the adjacent club room. Plenty of places to run in the burbs too. Alternative 2: Panama City Beach, Frank Brown Park. Could be damn cold since the pool is outdoors, but it is an excellent facility with saline water. They go LCM in the morning and SCY after 10am. I have family in Panama City and drive out to that pool everytime I'm up there. Would have to investigate rental charges. Excellent running in the park around the pool. No classroom facilities, so would probably have to designate a host hotel with a cheap conference room. Benefits of this location would be advance preview of IMFL course/area. It might also be more appealing to those a little further north who would drive to NW Florida, but not all the way down to Central Florida.
  • Paul,

Note that these camps, as written, are one day skills camp. Think RorP dropping in for one day of intense learning and coaching.

We want to keep the syllabus focused on learning and teaching vs training because training = all sorts of complications like courses, weather, geography, support, etc, and have the effect of limiting how many of these camps and where / when we can do them.

Fine if people want to stay on the backend of a camp and do their own thing. But there will be no training the day of the camp to keep the camp focused on it's intent: the coaches coaching and teaching the members.

    Thanks!

  • @ Rich, I'm with you ... and I mentioned class room facilities at each. There are few indoor pools down here, so in January you might be doing the swim videotape in luke warm water with cold windy air temps. I figure if anyone is going to travel to these skills camps, they might want to tack on the some backside training, especially at Clermont. If any of those locations work for you, I can check on the logistics for John. R/Paul
  • @great stuff all, thanks! Brenda we want to do a camp in YOUR TOWN, wherever that is. The one with all the people you are recruiting!!!
  • Just a comment on the January time frame for midwest:

There is often a "cheap" window right after Jan 1 at hotels and the like (e.g., Jan 3-7 or so). School re-starts either the first Monday after Jan 1 or the next one for most people. I suspect there would be some advantage to having a day out of town for people that's not during the school year for their kids if there is a choice.

I fundamentally agree that it's got to be mostly coaching/learning, and less about training.
  • @Paul, thanks. Yep, I did a clinic at the training center in '03, I believe. Great facility.

@WJ: Yep, we want to keep these very simple, consistent, and easy to produce = we can do more of them around the country with a minimum of lead time and logistical red tape.

  • I'll be at the Texas one! Here in San Antonio - there is a Spectrum Gym that has all you need. But - it won't come cheap. If you don't get any takers for "down south", I'll start checking!
  •  Hey...I know you weren't a Geograph major....but Ottawa CN nor Ottawa CA are situated in the Northeast Corridor.....I could see one around Philly  being better than DC....- could catch the NJ & Philly, NY, Delaware & DC...thoughts?

  • Hi Folks:

I have the following folks listed on the spreadsheet

    • Dave Walters - Chicago
    • Brenda Ross - Ottawa, Canada - eh
    • Jenn Edwards - Seattle/Pacific NW
    • Paul Hough - Central Florida

    Mike Joyner, you in?

    Anyone else?

    Thanks.

    John

  •  I can be, if you would like to have on ehere in COrtland or SYracuse, I am sure I can get the tri clubs behind it as well

  • I can't really help in MN, but I thought I heard a blip in a podcast that you'd be coming to IA; if so I could probably be of more assistance. Maybe this was a slip of the tongue, however. Let me know if you're coming this way.
  • @Rich - I am sure you have the venues pretty well scoped out, but I am happy to help with any heavy lifting and can be a load voice to rally the club for attendance if you like...
  • Hey guys,

Thanks for the poke. Patrick and I haven't had a chance, at all, to talk about this in more detail but it's on the table for our Mega Monster EN Business Planning Session / Coffee Overdose / WaffleHouse Tour in IMFL next weekend.

I will absolutely come out to Chicago and do a clinic. While I'm there, seems possible to do one the next day in the Twin Cities.

Iowa as well, as we have lots of folks there. Dino, I could do one in SoCal very easily, out the Duarte Aquatic Center.

At this point though, RnP just need to occupy the same physical space, look at a calendar and make it happen.
