Next 310 Question, regarding GSC-10

Have gotten a few runs in and like it.  Now trying to get it set up on the tri bike.

(keep in mind that my Joule and CycleOps Spd/Cadence sensor arre up and running on the tri bike)

Thought I would hit tonight's ride with both setups, just out of curiousity.

But, I couldn't get any communication from the Garmin 310 and GSC 10.  310 reading the Quarq just fine.  But nothing for speed or cadence.

Placement of GSC sensor and magnets, both wheel and crank, as instructed.  Hit the lil button on the sensor.  Went to the 310, under bike1 mode, then settings, then bike setup, then Ant+ Spd/Cad, made sure that Spd/Cadence Sensor box was checked.  310 told me that it detected the spd/cadence sensor.

So, everything looked legit, but riding produced no MPH or cadence (tho, I expect the Quarq cadence may trump), therefore no Elapsed Time.

Any ideas?

  • Chris, I assume that when you hit the lil button you did get red and green lights as spd/cd magnets passed by? Other than that and re-scanning for spd/cd is all I can think of.
  • all I can think of is this, my chainstay swoops in real close as it gets near the downtube. I wonder if it's too far away (5mm) from the crank, not picking up the cadence. But, since my quarq does the cadence thing, all I need is the sensor and wheel magnet to give me speed and, therefore, elapsed time, right?
  • Chris, I gotta ask - why the heck are you using the GSC-10 if you have a Quarq (which does its own cadence) and a 310 (which is a GPS and does its own speed)? Seems like you're trying to make this far more complicated than it needs to be.

If you're trying to make this work so you can have a speed measurement indoors on the trainer then I suggest you stop wasting your time. Indoor speed is in no way representative of what you can do outside for the same cadence and power. Do not even bother worrying about your speed number indoors. It's just an imaginary number because you're actually not moving or producing any speed. You're chasing Fool's Gold.

Just worry about your power and cadence indoors.

  • Sorry Bob, I'll try to explain...

Have a Quarq/Joule/CycleopsSpd&Cadence, for both Roadie and Tri. Ez swapping. Very happy with it. Have come a long ways learning how to use The Watts.

So, next is the run. I've NEVER been very good at guessing distances/paces/hills/rpe/etc. was using the old Timex Ironman Chrono for 'splits', but, on varied terrain, that was a crapshoot. Only had confidence in my intervals when I would go to the HS track.

So, now I building for my 4th long distance enduro event and I really wanted to run 'SMART', needing something more than 'I should get the the mile aid station around Xminutes'.
So, shopping for a good gps (or accelerometry) watch from Garmin, I saw that I could get a 310 for about the same price. And if I do that, i might as well set the whole thing up on the tri bike and leave the joule on the road bike.

which brings us to now. I had already swapped the joule over to the tri bike when I picked up the 310. After realizing that the Garmin wouldn't sync with the CycleOps Spd/Cadence sensor, I was forced to go get the GSC 10. tried them out on the same bike just for kicks.

didn't work tho, cuz the 310xt didn't pick up the GSC 10, so no speed, thus no Total Time.

you bring up a good question...do I need to set up the cadence stuff with the GSC 10? If I don't, do I modify the 310 setup in the ANT+ window to pair with just a 'speed sensor' or do I keep the 'spd/cadence sensor' box checked?

    Sorry u asked, aren't you?
  • I still fail to see why you need the cadence and speed sensor. Am I missing something?
  • Agreed with Bob. The Quarq gets cadence from its own cadence magnet. You get GPS speed from the 310xt. Why use the GSC-10?
  • FWIW, Chris, I have a GSC 10 'paired' with a Timex Global Trainer and they spend more time NOT paired than paired. I hope to have a PM next year so I can throw it in the trash, but for now, that's all I have - and I have the same problem that you describe. I have basically given up on having cadence at this point and just use the GPS on the Timex for speed. And when indoors, I don't worry about it.

In looking online, I found that the GSC 10 is fairly prone to having that issue - I had posted a question a couple months back on what others use and didn't get much response. I am guessing most folks in here have PM?? Anyway - the only thing I have found that will make it work after it 'stops' working is to remove the battery for a few mins on the GSC, put it back in and re-try. That seems to work about 25% of the time.
  • Yep, hit me right after my last post that it's a GPS speed thing, not a magnet/sensor speed thing. I was so zeroed in on using it for the run, I didn't think of the obviousness of it for the bike.

    It's my dain bramage.

FWIW, went out to day for the 4hr ride (yes, using both setups) and it worked flawlessly. (other than user error when I hit the stop button on the 310 and failed to recognize it, and then my Joule's memory filled up) The 310 and Joule were very consistent with their readings.

And they agreed that I'm getting faster.

I guess I don't need the GSC 10 at all, unless I want speed readings in the Pain Cave. And we all know that we train by Watts and Time in the OutSeason. So, I packing it up and gonna try to return it. Have only used it twice, doubt they'll give me a hard time (all3sports)

Thanks for helping me see the forest thru the trees. I do tend to overanalyze, make it harder than it has to be.
