Thoughts on Racing the IM / HIM Run by HEART RATE, not Pace

  • I am so glad to be seeing this topic a few weeks out from LT.

My plan, which seems to have worked best for me in the past, is to run by feel because the HRM doesn't mesh with me in the swim.  I wear my HRM on all training bike and runs.  But I don't wear it swimming.  When I did that in the past the strap slid down and became useless.  So I end up not racing with it.

Running off the bike (EP +30) just seemed, mentally, too easy to me.  Even HR wise, unless it is very hot and humid with high dew point (70+).  My plan was to slow myself down as much as reasonable off the bike.   But go by how I feel.  I will see how it all correlates after the next RR.

  • Back to perusing the forums and found this interesting on two fronts.

    1. It is a shift from the standard protocol
    2. It hasn't been fully adopted (or perhaps it is being tested by a chosen few)

With plenty of time until IMFL I am thinking this makes sense (using HR more so than pace) on race day.

Please make sure you've checked out the IM and HIM How-To pages in the Race Execution section of the wiki. PnI updated these about a month ago with our most recent guidance.

  • Thanks Rich - being in Week 9 of the plan I am now just starting to think about IMFL and have some reading to do it seems!
  • was referred to this post by another EN'er....some super helpful information out here. Thanks for sharing this info. I have wrestled with the relationship b/t pace & HR and this have given me some good stuff to chew on.
  • @David thanks for noting this information; just relocated it to the wiki!!!  image
