Vittoria tire question

Team --

I currently use a Vittoria Open Corsa Evo CX for my rear wheel. I really like it but after a couple seasons of racing it needs to be replaced.

I was going to buy another of the same, but when I went to the web to shop I found that Vittoria has released a few other versions in addition to maintaining the venerable Open Corsa Evo CX, specifically the Open Corsa Evo SC and the Open Corsa Evo Slick.

Given the variable road conditions we typically find on our race courses I'm not going to go with the slick unless someone makes a case that it's a good choice (that said, the Bontrager R4 Aero I use up front is a slick so maybe that's not such a bad call...).

I cannot figure out based on the website the difference between the CX and SC versions of the Open Corsa Evo.

Does anyone have some guidance for me?

Many thanks,

Matt

  • Hmmm, it doesn't appear there is alignment around an answer in that thread. I think the most useful post is the one that says:

The SC is a grippier version of the CX, tested slightly slower in term of rolling resistance (on drums) so on a dry day I'd still go for CX but then everybody knows CX on wet roads is a very dangerous tire so if you want one than can do it all the SC is probably the best options (that's why many road teams use SC, prefer to loose a watt but not have to change tubulars if the weather gets rainy).
By the way, if you want a 21mm for firecrest for example, CX is your only option, SC only available as a 23.

That sounds to me like the CX is the way to go. It seems a lot of people swear by the slicks, with the downside being durability (which I care a lot less about in a racing tire that'll be "demoted" to another bike after just a few races).

I'm still on the fence on this one.
