Managing/Adjusting/Prioritizing the Intensity of Power Clinic Workouts
Hey Folks,
We want to give you some guidance for ammending intensities on the fly, so you can adapt the clinic to fit where you are while still accomplishing our goals for you.
Priorities, in order:
- VO2: Get in the VO2 stuff (30/30s, pVO2 or 120% intervals) at the prescribed intensity. OK to shorten the work interval, if you need to (ie, watts take priority over the length of the work interval), ok to ride the recoveries at < 60% if you need to. _Example: 4×3’ @ pVO2 becomes 6×2’ (2’) or 8×1.5’ (1.5’) as needed; keep equal recoveries.
- FTP: Figure out the sum of the FTP time across the week of your plan and do your best to get “most” of this in, if possible. IOW, fine to break up long intervals (15’, 20’, for example) into shorter, more manageable intervals, if that’s what it takes. That said, getting in the total prescribed FTP time across the week is secondary to the Vo2 stuff above.
- 80-85% time: This is totally bonus. Do it, don’t do it, up to you, but definitely don’t do it if doing it compromises your ability to do #1 and #2 above. That said, if 1 and 2 just aren’t gonna happen, you’re fine to drop into 80-85% for the time you have available.

This is clear. Hope I don't have to dip into the suggestions to reduce interval length. And I assume now we keep our mouths shut about advising others on how to modify workouts, instead just commiserate.
