Bike set up to address nutrional needs

Was wondering if anyone can give me advice on how to set up my bike to accommodate my nutrional needs.  The race (70.3) has only 2 bottle hand offs.  I need 2-2.5 bottles per hour.  Plus where do I store the gels, bars etc...

  • Bottle between bars and on down tube isn't enough? But it may be better to explain your nutritional needs and then maybe we can help with the setup.
  • Require 2.5 bottles per hour, power gel/ other every 30 minutes. Currently have 2 bottles behind seat and trying to figure do I do one on the down tube and one inbetween the handle bars? Where do I store the gels, salt sticks etc.
  • Do the salt sticks not fit in the bars? http://www.saltstick.com/products/ssfull/finstallation.htm
What is in the bottles, just water or calories as well?
Seems like you are getting ~200 calories per hour from your gels? Could always throw a bento box on the bike to hold them or put in your back pocket.
  • Adding one bottle to your front end would get the bottles taken care of, wouldn't it?

That is a bottle stop less than every 20 miles...so, 3 bottles should cover it I would think. You just need to be sure to grab 2 bottles at each stop.
  • Where do you guys put the gels? Any recommendations on front end hydration set ups
  •  I got the Speedfil A2 this summer. I LOVE it. Have not had any problems with it. The straw in your face can be tucked down next to aero arm pad, its easy to flick up and and sip without breaking aero. Refil is pretty smooth and there is no splash after you close it up. Use it every ride and raced with it in my 70.3 this month. Worked great.

  • Bento box for gel behind the stem.
And if you want an aero bottle between the bars go with a Torhans.
  • x2 on the Speedfil A2 for between the bars, love mine! I don't use the bite valve and cut the straw reasonably short and also flip it down out of the wind when not actually drinking.

As far as a bento box. I highly recommend the Dark Speedworks (Speedpack 480). http://darkspeedworks.com/products.htm
I keep my salt sticks in a small pillbox in there and also carry a few Powerbars, but you could easily put gels or gu's in there...
  • There is a great bike setup/gear thread that is worth looking at. Initial thoughts:
    - put a bottle between your bars, on the downtube and seat tube
    - put your gels in flasks; there is a flask holder that attaches to your top tube that is great; you can carry an extra flask in your jersey pocket
    - when you put your gels in the flask, leave enough room for 1 gel and fill it with water; shake to make it easier to take down; this is a lot less messy and logistical than dealing with the packets (I can't take credit for this and the flask holder - learned about it from pro Kelly Williamson)
