RunTri review of IMLou 2012 Results - the toughest day!

RunTri report on Louisville 2012 - for those of us there...I think we could concurr!

Ironman Louisville 2012 Results Analysis

The 2227 finishers of 2012 Ironman Louisville appear to have tackled the harshest conditions of the last four years, with 14% DNS rate, an incredibly high 14% DNF rate, and the highest average time since 2009: 13:41. If the conditions in the 2010 race were considered highly extreme, but 2012 may have even been worse. Needless to say, Ironman Louisville remains ranked near the top of our Toughest Ironman Triathlon ratings

  • Interesting analysis. To be honest, although it was hot in the afternoon, it wasn't nearly as bad as I had expected it to be. For the weeks leading up to the race, I intentionally tried to get out in the middle of the northern Virginia summer heat. As we've had record high temps this summer (my final race rehearsal topped out at over 100 degrees with the heat index), I think that set me up well for handling the heat. I also know I took A LOT of the heat advice in the house with me on the course (heat pace calculator, mesh hat not a visor, ice down the pants every aid station, water all over the body at the bike aid stations, etc). That heat advice was worth the price of membership to me in hindsight.

I wonder if the heat was that bad or if people underestimated its effect on them and failed to adjust in training and race execution?
  •  Roy- I agree with you...it was a tolerable day...but it was hotter than 2010 when I raced...and I need to adjust my race day plans on the fly...and as we know via EN most people come in to the IM without a real plan or understanding of how to  adjust/race in the heat....as IM becomes more popular...more entries...more DNF's...etc.

  • My first IM was IMLOU 2010. I was completely self coached and self trained , guided by books mostly. A month before the race my girlfriend gave me the 4 Keys Talk. I watched it 2 or 3 times and so much of it made sense. Had no clue who EN was. Long story short I simply applied the 4 Keys the best I could without PM or HR and I had a fantastic first IM with an 11:42 finish and 20th in my AG. I credited so much of my success on that brutally hot day to the 4 Keys Talk. It wasnt until a month or so later I found out about EN and immediately joined! I have not regretted my decision. Congrats to all those who raced IMLOU 2012 , I do know what you went thru!

  • I agree with Roy, I did not think the heat was too bad. Of course I live in KY and am used to the conditions we had. Although it was hot, it was not "KY humid" that day and the lack of humidity made it feel much cooler.

@ Tim: This was also my first IM, and my first tri longer than a sprint. I had joined EN last November and had the advantage of all of that knowledge for my entire training cycle. Did not have power, but used HR and I executed well and had a great day thanks to all of that knowledge. I especially thought my nutrition plan that I used (exactly as outlined in the recent qt2 webinar) played a huge role in my day compared with others. I took in 12 bottles of perform on the bike and 2 bottles of water. Without EN I would still be in the fetal position somewhere outside of LaGrange.
