Tracking shoe mileage in Garmin Connect
So I have heaps of Garmin data detailing every minute of my training, but it's always bothered me that I've never had a good way of tracking the mileage in my running shoes even though I have metrics for basically everything else. I didn't want to start a separate means of logging shoe mileage because I wanted my training log to be simple, and didn't want to have numbers floating around in more than one place. But behold, I've recently discovered an easy way to do this in Garmin Connect.
(Note: moderate level of technical competency required here. Namely, the ability to use Excel or something similar)
- The crux of this is that you name your shoe(s) with a one word, unique, and unambiguous "label" (without any punctuation) and add that to the description of each workout when you use that shoe. For example, mine is "GT2160", which corresponds to the model of my shoe. If you have more than one pair of the same shoe, or if you plan on reusing the same model after you replace one, you might use something like "KinvaraRed1" or something similar. Just keep it simple.
- Now test that it's a good label by using the search function and seeing if that workout appears.
So you log weeks/months of workouts and label each workout with your shoe moniker in the description. If you want to see your total mileage on a pair of shoes:
- Seach for the shoe label. A bunch of workouts should pop up.
- Click the "Export to CSV" button on the bottom right of that box. You'll download a file called "Activities.csv".
- Import that file into a spreadsheet editor like Excel. The file is in a comma separated value format, so select "comma" as the delimiter option when the prompt shows up (an example of how to do this here)
- You should now have a spreadsheet of your workouts nicely arranged into rows and columns. Use the SUM function to add up the values in the "Distance" column, and that should represent your total shoe mileage.
Hope that helps!

Personally- When I download to WKO, in the description column I type a letter that corresponds to shoe color and add today's run total to yesterdays.
EX: T 136.2+4.8=141
New shoes, I start over at zero and can use the same letter if the same model is the same color.
Of course, I never use my tri shoes for anything else, i.e. I do not wear them to the grocery store. Today I had to walk back and forth from my screened porch to the garage moving stuff before leaving to run. Made maybe 8 trips of about 80 feet round trip. This is the most non running I have done in any running shoes in years.
Haha, thanks Michele!
That's actually a pretty clever method you have; never thought of that. I seems to have this odd aversion to adding numbers in my head when I'm at a computer. I like to have all my data entered in a way so I can filter/sort/play with it in various ways, but that's just me being spoiled by technology . God forbid I'll ever have to write down my times and miles on a piece of paper...
Btw, I'm happy to make a screencast of what I wrote above if that's helpful to anyone.
Also, if you only wear one pair of shoes, write the purchase / start date on the inside midsole and then simply search for all runs from purchase date to current date.
