HIM Race Pace Brick

Ok, had my first race pace brick today and used my power estimate (from thread in power and pace).  It seemed to work out very well.  HR averaged 152 for the entire ride.  Max HR was 164 but I didn't go over 160 for more than 2 minutes total the entire 56 miles (159-164 is my Z3).  Power stayed very near 200W as I planned.  NP for the ride was 201 but that was after started the first 5 miles at 180 to warm up

Here's the garmin connect link to the ride

I consumed two bottles with 3 scoops of perform and ate 6 cliff shot blocks throughout the ride (620 calories total) and took 2:48 to complete the 56 miles

Got off the bike feeling fine but IMMEDIATELY into the run my HR spiked no matter how easy I ran.  Averaged 9:22 for the run but that's 30 seconds slower than my LR pace.  HR was 170-175 and I can't figure out why.  THe effort was easy, legs felt fine.  I really don't have that off the bike adjustment for my legs.  I just can't figure out why my HR spikes.  I know the weather this morning (85F and 80% humidity) would slow me down but I figured I'd have gone sub 9 with my HR in the 160's.  I overheat BIG TIME and don't tolerate heat and humidity well.  Should I have just left the HR high and seen how long I could go?  I thought after a mile or two it would have dropped after settling in but that didn't happen

So.. just one of those days?  I went too hard on the bike even though it was mostly middle Z2?  That just doesn't seem right though.  I can't figure out where i went wrong or if I went wrong

  • Just to be certain, are you sure your HR actually spiked, rather than a misfunction of the HRM? I sometimes get the latter, and it's always too high. But it's usually at the beginning of a workout when there's not enough salt and water around... but just a thought.

Did you feel in distress when the HR as measured y your HRM was high? I guess I'm asking about your RPE and its connection/disconnection with that number.

But the answer to the question about what happens if you race with too elevated HR in the heat is that it WILL get you eventually.

Are you an experienced HIM racer? Most people can "get away" with bad pacing issues for 7-8 miles pretty easily on the run before it starts to really crack down on them.

We can talk/speculate more after I hear a little more.
  • No, it was correct and I was hurting. Shouldn't have been hurting at that effort i figured after a z2 ride. legs felt great and not even sore today.

I'm not an experienced HIM racer but I have done one. this was my first race pace brick with en.

I guess i figured that a z1 effort might produce a z2 or low z3 HR after the ride but I was suffering big time. Felt fine getting off the bike, never even was breathing hard at all but 1/4 mile into the run at a 9:30 pace my HR is 170+ and I'm hurting for some reason.

As an addendum.  On wednesdays after the trainer ride (either the ON time or the Z4 intervals) I run sub 9 minute miles with a HR below 160
