Bike Maintenance

I am currently disassembling my tri-bike post high speed crash. I was concerned about the fork being damaged and wanted to take a real close look at all the different components that get over looked through out the years. When I pulled the fork out and removed the head set bearings I was very surprised to find them extremely corroded. My bike is 1.5 years old and has been through three ironman builds so thats about 5000 miles. I have never been asked by my LBS about the head set bearings and they have never offered to service them. Based on the condition of the bearings I would say that I would not have made another ironman with them as is. After about an hour of cleaning and greasing and repacking they are in good shape and will likely reuse them. But I bring this up to remind you that the LBS may not be doing complete services when you take in your bike. BTW the fork should be fine, after a thorough cleaning and inspection no cracks or deflection was found. The wheels on the other hand are another story. Zipp 404's are on their way!
