Applesauce Help?

I've been doing the pre race/ rr applesauce breakfast. It seems to work alright, but I definitely get a blood sugar spike about one hour later. 3.5 cups of applesuacet has alot of high fructose corn syrup in it. There's noway I could ever go back to sleep after that much.  What brand of applesauce does everyone use? Is there a brand with less fructose corn syrup in it?

Thanks,

Pat O.

  • The applesauce has to be non-sweetened exactly because of the high fructose corn syrup issue. My contact at Core Diet said expect to be a bit bloated, but there is plenty of time for it to settle down (a few hours at least). I don't have a brand to recommend - I make my own!

  •  Trader Joe's Unsweetened Organic Apple Sauce.  I only do 12 oz serving.

  • I get the mott's natural which has no corn syrup. Most store brands wegman's by me for example also have a corn syrup free version.
  • I did the applesauce for the first time before my HIM this weekend. I used a cinnamon flavored bottle off the shelf at walmart. I looked at all that applesauce sitting in my bowl and wondered if I could ever eat it all. We didn't have any whey powder, so I ate a cup of Greek yogurt (caramel flavor), and I didn't have any ripe bananas, so I ate 2 pop tarts. I also drank about 32 oz. of Powerade. I pounded this down at about 3:30am. By 6:00 am I needed a pit stop which is a good thing. I have to say, I felt strong during the race and never felt nutritionally depleted or dehydrated. I did follow a nutritional strategy during the race where I ate and drank regularly.
  • I used the applesauce breakfast before IMC, as as Jim said I was a bit bloated (kind of had me panicked!) but it settled down and I felt really good swim and most of the bike. Definitely had a hard time going back to sleep having slammed back that much food however! I like yogurt mixed in myself , along with the banana, it seems to be a good pre-race meal. I did not practice this before in my RRs, as I could not convince myself to get up at 3 am for a RR ride... but it turned out well. Having cinnamon mixed in is supposed to help with the blood sugar spike as well, not sure if that is recommended by Core Diet or not. I use Motts unsweetened plain applesauce.
  • Aren't we supposed to have the apple sauce 2.5 hours before the race? Just aking as there were references to feeding in the middle of the night. Just curious...........
  • Olympic 2.5 hours; HIM 3 Hours; IM 3.5 hours; Marathon 3 hours The quantities change with each distance so that is the variance with the timing.
