Tim Cronk Lobsterman OLY Race Report
The Lobsterman OLY is out of Winslow Park in Freeport Maine. This is the 4th year in a row I have done this race and can't say enough about it. Its a saltwater swim, bike is rolling hills , smooth pavement , beautiful country and the run is the same. Its very well run , easy to get in and out with lots of parking etc. Usually 800 competitors counting aquabike , and relay. I think solo participants were 537 this year. And somehow every year the weather just seems to be beautiful.(it did rain hard for about 10 min on bike and then clear up this year, was warm and humid though).
I'm in a new AG this year 50-54. Having placed 5th in AG with a 2:25 last year I scoped out the times in 50-54. Winning time was 2:21:59. Its been 4 weeks since IMMT but I raced this all out with the intention of winning the 50-54 AG with a 2:20 or better (thinking that should do it and was within my reach).

Bottom line 5th in AG and 41st overall. Those old guys are fast and picked it up this year. Winner in the AG went 2:09:xx... FWIW my previous AG I woulda placed 2nd and only been 40 sec away from first! In fact I never saw anybody in my AG on the bike or the run. For the most part everyone ahead of me was already there and stayed there and the same thing with everyone behind. I did pass a couple on the bike but didnt know it.
Extremely happy with the way I executed with vast improvements accross the board. Bike numbers were 207NP with an IF of .90 vs 201NP and IF of .91 last year(I forgot to shut garmin off and my end numbers got lowered just going with last reading I saw). Run pace improved to 7:05 vs 7:19. My lungs , ribs, chest cavity and gerally my entire upper body is in alot more pain today than my lower body having pushed that hard for that long! Time to start building back the endurance for a REV3 HIM in Oct at Venice Fl and then IMCZ in Nov!
OLY is a great distance . In between HIM and sprint but closer to a sprint ,it kinda removes alot of the thinking about pacing and nutrition, its more about just keep it under redline maybe hit the rev limiter now and then.
Nutrition I treated the night before and breakfast of ,just like an IM or HIM . 1 gel before swim, 20 oz 210cal bottle perform on bike with prerace in it, 1 gel and couple sips gatorade on run for a total of a little over 400 calories!
If you get the chance , do this race!

Nice job racing after your IM...keeps the post IM blues at bay...for a little while anyway!
Nice work older man. Didn't realize you were doing a Nov ironman too.
Win a lobster?
Good luck to you and Robin both in revving back up for Nov IMs, I have a swan song HIM next weekend then I think I'm bowing out to get fat and play video games for the rest of the season. @Robin, *might* be able to make it out to IMAZ this year to volunteer and spectate. A bunch of my friends are talking about signing up for next year so I may do a double header next year with IMLT and IMAZ.
A seven minute improvement year-on-year in an Oly is astrounding, especially at your level. Congratrs on that. Your upper body pains may reflect how hard your were breathing. Your accessory breathing muscles, like the ones between the ribs, probably need some tuning up! Maybe one of those gimmicky exhaler contraptions I see advertised?
tim, "see" you in november.
trevor, cool. Just me and mom in arizona.
