run BEFORE the bike?

 Hi All,

I understand the value of a brick run, but I'm not too sure of the purpose of an easy run BEFORE the long Sunday bike?

Is it to get our legs tired before the bike? Or to get an additional run before the last bike ride of the week?

Thanks!

  • Catherine, it is to get a quality run in on fresh legs and keep you from talking yourself out of the post ride run. Also try this Wiki post for more information http://members.endurancenation.us/Resources/Wiki/tabid/108/Default.aspx?topic=The+2012+No+Brick+Fix
  •  Yep, everything you need is in that Wiki post. Please read and let us know if you still have questions. The team has been 'prescribed brick free" for about a year now.

  • Thank for the explanation and link Dewey! Really helps to know the purpose of each workout.

Coach R, still learning how to navigate the ocean of information in the Wiki section, but improving fast image. That wiki post was awesome and answered all my questions, thanks!
  • Cool. Yup, there's a lot but we are working to improve the organization of it all :-)
  • In my experience if you run before the bike you have to be really careful to take it easy on that run. Those runs are usually prescribed as z1/z2 stuff. If you hammer the run at z3/4 before the bike you will undermine your performance on the bike. That is spoken by someone who lacks the discipline to run at z1 (a problem that I'm trying to solve!!).
  • Yep, and if you're running before a long-ish ride, you'll need to plan ahead so that you eat a good breakfast between the run and ride, and then pay attention to nutrition during the ride. If you run with a Garmin, pay attention to your calories burned and then factor that in to your breakfast and ride nutrition.
