Kona on Fewer Training Hours (Testimonials Wanted)

Seeing as we just bribed a lot of the Kona racers with free endurance nation race T-shirts, it's only fitting that we now ask for something in exchange. :-)

Specifically I'm looking for stories that people are willing to share about training less hours with endurance nation and still qualifying for Kona. I know, I know, nobody wants to fall into that trap of saying their ways better than anyone else's other way. That said, that the game is being played out right now on the inter-webs.

I'm not saying that you need to come up with some crazy story about how you only train 2 hours a week this love that an altitude tent to get to the big show. I was looking for a couple paragraphs on why  you think training with endurance nation was what put you over the top.

Ideally we'd have anywhere from 2 to 4 of the stories that we could share online. If you're interested please e-mail support@endurancenation.us or post your story below.

Thanks!!

  • Ping Neils Esmeijer offline...not sure he checks the forums too often...email me and I can give you his address...he works for my company and therefore I suspect his total weekely training hours are on the low end of the KQ range.

  •  OK ... Before EN - training for/racing IMs for 10 years, 4 Kona Q's following Brand X coaching service; 3 years with EN, 3 more KQs (counting those where I qualified in 2 races in one year). Apart from the fact that my times were faster on the same courses with EN (at ~ age 60!) here are the other differences relative to the question:

    • "Only" 12 weeks of IM specific training compared to 24-6; practically, this means starting IM focus in April rather than January for IM CDA.
    • About 10% fewer hours trained in the 12 weeks prior to the IM (I'd have to look at my training diary to document the exact amount.)  Since I swim in the OS, that 10% figure remains the same for the preceeding 10-12 weeks.
    • Collective wisdom of the coaches and team allowed me to be more effective with my training, slotting in 2-4 weeks of IM specific higher bike volume at the appropriate time, without slipping into "over reaching or training."
    • My long runs were reduced from slogging thru 3 hours 3-4 times, to 1-2 2hr 15min-2 hr 30 min runs, with a number of 2 hour runs, in the 3 months prior to the race. Since I hate to run, I loved this.

See ya @ Lava Java, I'll have my EN visor and a Hawaiian shirt on, sipping my chai tea. (2-3 PM daily)

  • My story is a few years old now and already out there but if you are welcome to use it again if you want. 2007 IMWI 12:02 after lots of very long rides and runs and high volume training for 9 months. 2009 IMWI 9:49 on EN training plan.
