St. Croix 70.3 information

Hi,  I am considering St. Croix in 2013.  Has anyone done it?  If so, I would like to hear your experience and recommendations on place to stay.

How was the bike course and road conditions?

Thanks!

  • Paul Hough did it this year. I'm sure he will chime in soon.
  • I traveled with EST and stayed 50 yards from transition. Roads sucked. St Croix is very poor but they were proud to announce that this year the roads were in the best condition ever, which is to say, that the left side of the road was replaced in sections of 20 to 50 yards to eliminate the worst potholes. But then it rained, and rained, and rained. All kinds of stuff was washed onto the roads and I've never seen so many flats and crashes. But it is a unique race and worth experiencing. The Jump Up celebration has no comparison. Heck, there isn't anything like it all.

Your main options are the few hotels in the downtown area or the Bucaneer Resort. The later is nice, but if you stay there you will be biking the 3 miles back since the roads are closed for the race. Lots of good restaurants but not too many hotels to choose from. Downtown is only about 3x6 blocks. It goes beyond that but nothing you would want to walk through at night. There was a new hotel going up downtown that looked like it would be a great option, but I don't know the name. Definitely rent a car and check out the beer drinking pigs. That was just too funny. I drove all over the island but I've lived in England so left hand driving was an easy adjustment. I've got a race report out there somewhere. PM anytime if you have specific questions.
  • Thanks Paul for the information.  CU in COZ!
