Training Peaks Web vs. WKO+ ?

I imagine there is some additional features in the WKO software download versus the online version, but they don't seem to have a side-by-side comparison of the products.  Anyone have an idea?

  • Oh no he didn't! Standby for fireworks....

Kidding aside, this can be hotly debated and has been. I have both, but rarely if ever use WKO+ anymore. I hate that it is PC based. I am a Mac guy and this requires using a backup PC, but I also hate how old and dated it looks. It's like windows 3.0. It is also a little clumsy in my opinion.

I get everything I need from the web version and truely enjoy using it more. I can check in from different computers and like a lot of the sharing features. While the desktop version has a bit more power today, it is not the stuff i use and the web keeps getting better.

The real debate centers on the revenue model. Many hate paying monthly when you can WKO+ and be good.... For a while.... Until they sell you and upgrade. I find real value in the online version and don't mind paying monthly - like Strava, like EN, like my online music service, like satellite radio and cable TV. This totally a personal choice and not a value judgement beyond the small monthly fee versus the larger cost for the older, PC based platform.

Just my humble opinion. Don't hate. To each there own. image
  • @ Dan I didn't even know there was an option but I have WKO and like it. You can plug your runs in too if that helps.

Lastly newbi... put a picture up in that icon I'm sure you don't look like that.. Ha Ha...
  • I recently moved from a pc to Mac and as a result moved from WKO+ to a paid Training Peaks subscription and the transition was seamless, including easily moving my years of WKO+ data on line. I second everything that Dino stated.

I find Training Peaks to be an elegant, easy to use solution. I like it and would not go back.
  • I have WKO+ and the paid subscription to Training Peaks. I find I never use WKO+ any more. The only thing that I used to use in WKO+ that is not in Training Peaks is smoothing of the data in the graphs. That was sometimes nice to remove some of the noise.
  • << too cheap to pay a subscription when I already have WKO+ bought and paid for. Been using it 2 years, does what I need, no extra cost, no plans to pay more.
  •  Ha...ya'll are gonna laugh...I was using both...I didn't realize TrainingPeaks had all the same graphs etc...as WKO+...(though I do like WKO+)

  • I have a "mental block" issue with all these companies trying to move me to a monthly subscription model. I know it's in their best interest to do so, but I'm against it.

And, as much as I like to call myself a techie, I don't like to upgrade as frequently (iPhone 5 anyone?) as other people do. So, once I sink money into a product, such as WKO+, I will use it for the entirety of it's lifespan - basically until I'm FORCED to migrate.

I still use Microsoft Money 1998, that I bought in late 1997 when I was a very poor check-bouncing post-college student, to log EVERY financial transaction I've had in my life. Best $30 investment I've ever made if you ask me! I've got the software CD, and it migrates to all my newer and newer PCs, laptops, etc over the years.

As long as it works, I'll keep using it!
  • I agree with Scott - no need to upgrade or change just for the sake of upgrade or change. Those changes/upgrades often are so small and incremental a user like me cannot even tell much of a difference.

. . . except for his thoughts on Money 98. I used it until Microsoft stopped supporting downloading of financial data. I need that - I am precision driven and it simplifies my life. Moved to Quicken and, in my opinion, after a couple of years it turned into a piece of crap with constant problems in getting investment data downloaded correctly. I now use Mint which is precise, simple and free.

Sorry for heading in a different direction - I blame Scott.
  • No one has addressed a central difference: cloud data storage (TP) vs local data storage (WKO). You have to decide which is better. Computer disaster and you might lose everything (WKO+), but if you stop using TP, you'll lose access to a lot of data (TP)

Same here... I have a mental condition called 'trainingfileolossis' which is the fear of losing my training files. Luckily with Garmin Connect I have every swim / bike / run file on the net, and because WKO+ is my main program to check fitness and analyze workouts I can take it wherever I take my computer.
