Bring my own bottles on 70.3?

For an upcoming wtc 70.3, I am considering brining bottle of perform #1 with me and then taking up the other 3 while on the course.

Is this wise? I could carry 3 with me and then only need to pick up 1 on the course. I guess I am just not sure if the extra weight of carrying the bottles outweighs the need to slow and grab bottles.

What do y'all do?

  • If you know you're going to live "off of the course" then there's really no reason to carry those extra bottles with you (my $.02).

Your setup will look cleaner, be lighter and most likely more aero without the exta bottles.

  • I've personally brought my own for halfs I've done, but then again they weren't WTC, so the support was a little more sparse and not as regimented in how often the aid stations are. But if you know that every X miles there will be support, then I'd say ditch bringing your own and go off course.
  • I'd say first off drop any unnecessary bottle cages you don't need. two, bring 1 just incase then live off the course. Better to have one if you need it VS .... Nothing ?>?? ouch
  • Ok. I am gonna go for it and live off the course. There are 4 aid stations on the bike more or less evenly spaced.
I think that I will go with a bottle in the cage between my bars and then hit the aid stations. I am going to leave my 2 bottle set up behind my seat on though. I will put my extra tube, co2 etc in one bottle and use the extra to temporarily hold an extra bottle till I need it. Looking at the aid station layout and my hydration plan, they dont line up very well. I will need 3 bottles from the course but there are 4 more or less evenly spaced stations at mi 12, 24, 36 and 48. So I will hit mi 12, 24 and 36 and cruise past 48 unless something goes wrong.
    thx all!
