  • After a dominating performance last yr, I just want to lay down the gauntlet to everyone in da Haus...

The Withrow Family WILL be back-to-back ICTT champs! Just sayin'...

That cute little Ross couple has no chance to win, but hey 2nd place will still be on the podium, right...

Let's see if there are any other dark horse candidates willing to step up to the challenge!
  • How does a pint of Ben & Jerry's stack up as a carb-loading pre marathon meal? I've got race this weekend.... but it sure is hard to resist a challenge.

All I can say is "we'll have to wait and see"......
  • I'm lactose intolerant, is there a division for that? Does B&J make a milk/dairy-free product?
  • Withrow: I need to break my silence about the 2011 ICTT and claim my rightful victory. I did a 4:53 with Peanut Butter F'In Cup. With 1440 total cal and 920 from fat this the fattiest and highest cal pint there is. It tastes ok too. I had a WMICTT of 445. So who will challenge ME this year?? I am the Ice Cream Bawse.

    Nemo's post on rules:

A little more detail on the scoring for those of you who haven't played before. This isn't a strait up Time Trial (best time wins). We realized back in '08 that there could be advantages gamed by choosing a less calorie rich/ high fat ice cream. So WSM Cramer came up with an ICSS (Ice Cream Stress Score) and ICIF (Ice Cream Intensity Factor) to provide a normalized time for everyone to use as the TT score.

However, we then also realized that smaller peeps would have a bit of a disadvantage as well. So the factors were further weighted (thanks to WSM Blazer) to account for weight. (the WMICSS)

The math looks like this (get ready for an ice cream headache just reading this!!!)

    ICSS = ((kcals from fat)^2 / (total kcals * duration in seconds)) * 100

So, let's take a pint of B&J's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. It contains 1080 total kcals, of which 520 are from fat. Our ICIF is the fat kcals squared divided by the total kcals, or (520^2)/1080 = 250.37.

Our Ice Cream Stress Score (ICSS) has an inverse relationship to the total duration (IOW, our score must go up the faster we consume the ice cream), so we divide our IF by the total duration and multiply the result by 100 (just to make it a more impressive number). Pursuing our current example, if Rich plows through his pint in three minutes flat (or 180 seconds), that gives him an ICSS of (250.37/180)*100 = 139.09. Similarly, if Beth eases her way politely through her pint in 15 minutes (900 seconds), that gives her an ICSS of (250.37/900)*100 = 27.82.

The ICIF and ICSS metrics really serve to equalize the stress of different types of ice cream, so those of you who can take a pint of non-fat vanilla yogurt in 45 seconds don't gain an unfair advantage over the Chunky Monkey crew.

WMICSS (weight modified ice cream stress score) = (((fat Kcals)^2/(total Kcal))/time) * ((1/weight)*1000)

SO...substituting my estimates at Rich and Beth's weight, you get the following for B&J Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough example:

    WMICSS (Rich) = (((520^2)/(1080))/180)*((1/170)*1000) = 818.20
    WMICSS (Beth) = (((520^2)/(1080))/180)*((1/110)*1000) = 252.90

Rich still wins, BUT...if Beth substitutes a slightly tougher Coffee Heath Bar Crunch for Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and gets her time down from the BOP 15 minutes to a solid MOP 5:56, then you get the following:

    WMICSS (Rich) = (((520^2)/(1080))/180)*((1/170)*1000) = 818.20
    WMICSS (Beth) = (((600^2)/(1120))/356)*((1/110)*1000) = 820.81

    Beth Wins!!!

SOOOOOOOO, my point here is this: Pick your Poison carefully!!!

  • Which DAY is this?  I am doing a double century on saturday, but sunday would be perfect timing!!

  • I have a couple of questions. First, are there any rules about (a) spoon size; (b) spoon type; (c) defrosting of ice cream prior to commencing (I think completely melting should be an immediate DQ, but would permit a slight thawing so that you don't have to work at get the ice cream out of the container); or (d) whether one can induce vomiting in advance or subsequent to the time trial without disqualification? Second, can veterans weigh in on their suggested flavor choices and eating strategy? I would think that you want to minimize chewing and so should pick a flavor that does not contain "bits" of things (like Cherry Garcia or Peanut Butter Cup). But maybe the chewing breaks up the volume allowing for an overall quicker consumption? Rich should post his thoughts on whether "eating steady" is optimal pacing or whether having a higher variability is preferable (eat fast while the volume of ice cream is large, and slow down as you get to the end). And we should develop some metrics for this, like a variant on the heat pace calculator to predict how fast you should eat at various freezer temperatures in light of the ice cream headache potential.
  • Here's the thread from last year http://members.endurancenation.us/T...fault.aspx

and my best effort.... not a winning stratagy but it was sure fun.....

  • Good points Brian. But you forgot this:

4 - Bonus points for pics and/or videos.

  • @Michael:
    a) any spoon is fine.
    b) Carbon Fiber Spoons are lighter.
    c) Defrosting the IC ahead of time is definitely not allowed
    d) Vomiting ahead of time (if caught on tape) would definitely show commitment and would likely lead to bonus points!

My advice on flavor is to pick one you like. A quart in about 5 mins is a lot of Ice Cream, may as well enjoy it! I prefer "Half Baked"... And forget steady, treat it more like a VO2 set...
  •  @Scott:  I am horribly lactose intolerant too.   I think Ben & Jerry's makes a sorbet, but there is no reason that you should be forced to have the low cal "disadvantage."  Thankfully there are really good options out there now, many you can even get from big chain grocery stores.  The one that is probably easiest to find is a brand called "so delicious."  They make gluten free chocolate chip cookie dough!  And peanut butter fudge something or other.  And all kinds of other super decadent flavors that are dairy free and pack as much of a punch as and ben and jerry's.    You can choose from soy or coconut based.  There are also likely options at your big chain "health food" stores like whole foods...  Go get shopping!!!

  • @ John: I did not see #4 in the 2011 rules to which I claim victory. The TT is the race of truth.
  • Make no mistake" That cute little Ross couple has no chance to win, but hey 2nd place will still be on the podium, right.." We will be coming hard to topple the Withrow couple domination. Be ready we have the Ottawa
Sleeper cell out in full force for support. Let the games begin!!! Lol! See you all at the finish line! :-) :-)
  • Did I see "gluten free chocolate chip cookie dough?????" MUST. FIND. NOW.

And since I suck at smack-talk, I'll just say brace yourselves for some self-deprecation and hilarity, Withrow-style.
  • People - I know I am new around here, but you all really have no chance in this. I was BORN for this event!! As a recovering B&J Addict, the only problem I will have is limiting my consumption to only 1 pint!
  •  @ Jess:

I am not sure what the New Jersey equivalent for the grocery store "Ralphs" is, but its one of those big ordinary chains.  A lot of em have it.  If not your odds are probably pretty good that the alternative "whole foods" types will ahve it too.

@ Greg:  ditto.  I am the small but mighty dark horse.  You all better just *watch out.*

  • Holy Hot Topic!! I have an unfair advantage due to the Big Island heat melting my IC as fast as I can eat it... stay tuned for the DOUBLE on Kona race day. As for the actual day, do it Sat, do it Sun, just do it!!! image
  • Here's a "top tip" ( as the Brits would say): Kitima's hot tea; slam the ice cream as long as you can stand, them slam the hot tea to offset the freezing, then back on the ice cream. Alternate as needed.
  • OK, I have to ask:

Should the folks NOT eating Ben and Jerry's be put into their own category?  I am not sure that we are apples-to-apples here.  But I don't know.

I told Brenda Ross the other day that it is B&J's only.  But if the group votes otherwise, I am cool with it.

    What say you all?

  • B&J is particularly hard when frozen. My vote is people can get special permission to use some other brand but only under special circumstances (like lactose intolerance for instance) but they should have a drafting penalty of say 3 minutes. But that seems like a bit of a harsh penalty, maybe 1 minute is more appropriate. But folks with this special permission will not have their entry count unless they submit a video with the first part explaining why they are using an alternative IC supplier.
  •  Have you ever eating ice cream with a nut base?  It rivals B&J any day of the week,AND takes much longer to soften up.  I know.  I hotly contest this, and suggest that everyone have something showing how hard the ice cream is when you start off.  Anyone can also diddle around before and allow their B&J to get soft. And some freezers just suck.  Like the one in my hotel room!  (sigh).

  • Julia makes a good point... Ice Cream should have a Stiffness Index...
  • A throw down is a throw down - if we are to compete with the Withrows, we have to make it a level playing field. I will accept your challenge go traditional. I may, however, have a hard time of it after the event, due to my lactose intolerance issue, but it would not be a competition if there were not some discomfort during and after - right????
  • I have done my research analyzed the data and seen the vids. We are definitely up for the challenge, see you on the other side!
  • Alright - today is the big day! But I gotta ask - why are there 2 threads devoted to this challenge? This one (that is being used) and the one Coach P started that is in the "Announcements" section of this Forum. Coach P's thread points to the Race Entry Spreadsheet similar to how we sign up for other races. I would think that to be "official" anyone wishing to compete would need to "register" properly on that spreadsheet.
  • @Gregg:  P's post is simply the announcement post.  We will have separate threads like this one for each Challenge.

@Brenda:  Extra points for you for lactose intolerance and eating B&J's?  :-)

OK, I say we go with with what folks can truly handle.  Give Scott, Julia and Brenda a pass this round.

  • Done. My teeth are still cold.
  • Done and strung out.
  •  well, I am done with the double century, but I am so incredibly messed up I am going to have to wait until tomorrow to eat and post.  Congrats to all the Kona-ites.... too!!

  • We brought out the field(in more way's than one). We were up for the challenge, Ottawa Sleeper cell and we conquered. Results and vid TBA! PS my teeth are still brrrrr!
  • @withrow, where were you hiding the carbon fiber cutlery when we had the bbq???
