What It Takes....October 2012

Hi Ladies!  I've been in marathon state of mind this past spring/summer/fall, and haven't been lurking or writing on here.  Time to re-focus on triathlon!   I recovered completely from a complete hysterectomy in January, and have dedicated my season to running.  My goal this year is to once again, give IMLOU my full attention, and FINISH it this time, in 2013!!

How is everyone?  So excited that today is Kona, and hope to track Coach P and other EN peeps!

Drop in and say "hi" when time permits!

  • Hi Everyone, and Barb! I haven't been here much or much on EN site lately after my IMCDA was over... Barb, I am glad you are doing so well. You are such a marathon maniac!! (Are you the member?) I will cheer for you to complete IMLou in '13!

I hadn't had much mojo to do an IM race in '13 until... WTC announced the IM Canada in Whistler! My favorite place and closest from my house. I just signed up, and feel excited about the challenge!

I hope everyone is doing well.
  • Hi Yasko!! So glad to hear from you!! Glad you signed up for Whistler! I'll be cheering for you too, Yasko! I am not yet a Marathon Maniac. However, once I finish the Des Plains Marathon this Saturday, I will join them! I will have done 3 marathons within 90 days...actually in 45 days! Then I'm taking a short rest and just swimming and biking, until OS starts!
Where are the rest of you ladies??
  • Hi Barb and Yasko!
I took a severe break after IMLP and kinda vanished from the EN site. It's good to be getting back and re-focused. I'm excited to start the OS in a week and a half! Actually, I'm a little scared. Haha! It's amazing how fast I get lazy. I'm sure a few days back into it, and I'll feel on board with it all again.
I've got to start checking in here more often!
    Kori
  • Hello ladies!
I haven't ever posted in this forum before... so hi! I am so out of the loop I didn't even realize that IM Canada will be in Whistler! Love that place... I used to live in Seattle, so I've made many a long weekend trip to Whistler for skiing.

I've signed up for Eagleman in June, and as of now, that is my only race. I missed out on signing up for IMWI image because my husband practically had a cow about the money. I am SO bummed because an old college of roommate signed up and I was so looking forward to doing my first IM with her. However, my mother-in-law was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and I thought it would be an awesome way to raise some money for the cause and also to bring everyone together (both my husband and my families live near Minneapolis, MN so the race would be doable in terms of travel for all of them!). Sooo, I am hoping I can make all of that work out. Will start the OutSeason, etc as if I plan to race IMWI. Looking forward to getting back on a plan. image

And Kori - my nickname growing up was Kori! 50% of my life still calls me Kori. image I have only ever seen one other person spell it the way we do!
  • Hello ladies! Its weird to see everyone talking about OS when I'm not even done with my season yt. (IMFL in one week- First IM!) My biggest stress is getting there with Hurricane Sandy on the way. UGH I'll be taking a 2 month break after IMFL and starting in the OS in Jan. and only doing sprints and olys next year.

What does everyone do between the end of their season and OS? I hate to lose fitness, but am DONE training!
  • I know what you mean Kim. As one of the tiny antipodean contingent, I'm just getting into training! In a way it's been good timing tho, reading all the race reports/lead-up chat has been great incentive since I started 5 weeks ago.
  • Hi ladies! Love all the 'K''s! Kylie, Kim, Kortney, and Kori! Kortney, what an awesome thing, to race for your mother-in-law! I'm sure you can make it work. Are there still Foundation slots available for IMWI? More money, but you could still get in.
Kim, in answer to your question, I just take it easy, run a bit, do some yoga, elliptical/ARCH trainer, whatever I feel like. Many of the veteran ladies do Cyclo Cross, ski, etc.
Welcome back Kori, and welcome Kylie, from Australia! image
I completed all three of my marathons, within 40 days, and am now an 'official' Marathon Maniac! (Yasko!)
Keeping an eye on Hurricane Sandy, and hoping my teamates on the East coast all stay safe!
Watching the Bears lose to Carolina right now.... image
  • Barb- Congrats on the MM!! My first will be IMFL....

Once I recover I may stick to some running (weakest) and do tabatas on the bike a couple days a week and see how that works in terms of maintaining some of the fitness. The thought of my ftp dropping back to where I started last year makes me nauseous!

Cool on all the K's here!
  • Hi Gang,

    Good to hear from everyone!

@Barb: You are a maniac! But we love you anyway.

@Kim: Will you be able to make it to FL OK?

    @Kortney: Welcome!

@Kori: You'll enjoy the OS. It is hard, but fun!

@Yasko: Good to see you back!

I've totally lost motivation since finishing RedMan in September. I'm enjoying sleeping and having time to do other things - like knitting! I went to Knit Camp a couple of weekends ago. Now all I want to do is knit. Work is slowing down a bit which is good, and bad. Starting the countdown to leaving for Vail for Christmas! I need to sign up for something to get motivated to start working out. I want to work on my run and swim over the OS. I'm trying to decide whether to look at a Total Immersion swim coach, or just use my regular swim coach. Having a hard time getting pumped to get up at 4AM for a 5AM master's swim. When I was in grad school, I could go home and take a nap after. Can't do that with a job. . . .

Hope everyone on the East Coast is OK!
  • I live in the DC area... we got hit by Sandy (not as bad as New York and New Jersey, etc, but still...) on Monday. Power went out early in the evening, and thankfully was only out for about 12-13 hours. I thought we had escaped unscathed (no damage, trees down, etc, etc) but yesterday I went down the basement to get on my bike and stepped down on to some extremely squishy carpet. Like completely saturated carpet. Entire basement flooded... standing water in the areas with hard surfaces, including our wine cellar. What a pain in the neck.

I know it could be way, way worse, but this just sucks. And, hubby was out of town for the entire thing... doesn't come back until tomorrow. I haven't had a decent workout in three days and I am CRANKY!

  • You right Barb, that's a lot of Ks! Kortney, sorry to hear about the basement. I had a minor flood from a leaking pipe a few weeks back in my garage but yours sounds worse, hope the clean up is going okay.

Penny, isn't a pity you can't knit and peddle on a trainer at the same time! Actually, it's probably possible but it'd be a bit hard to work hard while going at it with the needles! In theory I knit, but what I really do more often is build stash....
