IMSG 2010 week 1 swim thread

OK , I am no swimmer. I "AM" the slow lane at masters but I LOVE to swim anyway. Had a great workout this am. I asked my girlfriend who is a GREAT swimmer to egg me on and keep me motivated to swim more and better. She was excited to help and gave me some good feedback today! Looking forward to fixing my stroke.

Any other non SG peeps who are following along in our journey, feel free to post and help us along!

  • I'm loving being back in the pool! It's almost a nice treat after so much bike and run work. I went ahead and did a T-Pace test yesterday and came up better than I expected. Better than 2008 on my build to IMCDA!! I did a lot of technique work over that season and I think it must have stuck. It is nice to have that in my weeks now, espcially since I haven't seen any movement in the bike and run tests since early in OS.

What will be interesting is what my tune will be in a month. Will I be cursing the very existence of the freestyle stroke!?! Will I stilll be feeling smooth in the water??? Time will tell! I'm going to have to be very aware of if and when things start to change in that regard.

How's everyone else doing with the swim? Enjoying that chlorine smell on your skin all day afterwards?

(Carrie thanks for kicking off these threads!)
  • Hi ladies, yeah I just started swimming this week. Commuting 160 miles round tirp twice weekly to make 2 swims per week. I'm also easing into it slowly recovering from a rotator cuff tear and so far it's doing fine. Yes, I love mother earth's womb (the pool) and the chorline smells good, tastes good and dries the heck out of my skin afterwards but it's nice to be back. Maybe I'll get the green tint back in my blonde hightlights after a few more plunges.

Carrie you should know Olivia is a humble strong swimmer. She's a baracuda in the water! Hope you both have a stong finish this week.
  • I had a feeling my sweet Olivia was a strong swimmer. Ohh if I could just add being a fishy to my tri resume....

It is not for lack of trying. My best IM swim 1:13, my worst 1:19 ( except HI in 1:25, ocean, non wet suit and most peeps are slower). I say I get my money's worth in the swim:-) . I have become a scardy cat and go all the way to the outside in races.( I call it the long course:-)) Maybe in SG I can move in a little and use the draft. Just scares the bejeezers out of me to be in the middle of all those people!

OK so you now know my weekest link! Wish me well in fixing it... A little atleast:-)

  • Alas the open water does make things tough. I tend to swim well in the pool and then struggle in OW with direction. Yep. I've been known to take self guided tours of Boulder Res, Galveston Bay, etc. Add to that the fact that I'm usually expending so many calories with extra movement as I'm shivering to try to stay warm and well....It all adds time and wears me out. So I'm not that fast when it counts. But I do still love it, which is what matters!

Stephen - you crack me up with your green/blonde highlights comment!
  • Hi peeps! Any swims to report on ? How are you feeling?

I did masters this am. Was fatigued in general from yesterday so really not up for timed sets. Our coach, sweet friend of mine, was on deck today instead of swimming with us so I was blessed with her being able to watch me and give me drills to fix my stroke. She rocks. We spent the wole time on form!!The one drill that really helped was what I call the "hang time" drill. It makes my forward arm glide and slows down my turnover. Then we added fast kick with that into a nice few 25's where I was actually gliding and not fighting the water. Perfect workout for one tired irongirl.

Then instead of an easy land run of 30 minutes, I decided to rest my legs from yesterday and run 30 minutes with aquajogger in the pool. Great recovery I think as I feel great now.

  • I'm with you Carrie-always cautious in the water. I actually had a great week in the pool, felt like a swimmer for the first time this year. I am kind of doing a mix of the beginer/advanced sets. I only have time to swim btwn 2000-3000 yards. Not looking forward to the cold water, I did IMC'dA a few years ago and the 60 degree water left me cold for quite a while
see you in a 11 weeks
  • Oh Sheryl, you and me both, sister. Were you at CDA in '08? I thought I wouldn't ever stop shivering on the bike! Can't imagine how many additional calories I burned with that. I definitely have some anxiety about how the water will be in that res. Maybe we can huddle in a space blanket before the start?????
  • Olivia-yes it was 08 and was awful for me-on the Thursday pre-swim I was only able to get in up to my wetsuit covered thighs! I have toughed up a bit, but it will be wonderful to have someone to huddle with-I have a bunch of those space blankets left over from marathons! At least this is just one loop-no tempation to get out and just run away
  • First time I've been in the pool three times in one week in a long time. Felt very good. Hoping I can maintain this for the next 10 weeks!
