First Weekend of Long Bike Rides

How did everyone go with these long rides? I suffered pretty fiercly on Saturday. The block of Z5 work really did me in and that was really getting to me while I was still trying to finish the ride. I fell short of the prescribed ride time and was bummed about that and I couldn't muster the strength to go out into the mountain snow to run. As the day went on I began to reframe that ride and what it meant to me in this training cycle. First, I put into perspective the fact that the jump in volume was HUGE from the end of OS to yesteray and that a bit of an adjustement is probably not the worst thing. I also realized that getting and staying worked about about the ride wouldn't be productive at all.

Lucky for me I had the chance with today's ride to put in to practice some strategies for managing the volume, the inevitable paths down which my mind would take me, my phsical discomfort, etc. I came thorugh today's ride in a much better place and feeling good about what I accomplished for the weekend. Was it a perfect weekend of workouts? No. Did I learn something and push my limits? Yes. Will this help in the build process? Yes...after all it is a process of building up the fitness....

Hope you're all enjoying some good recovery for the rest of the weekend!.

  • Hi Olivia,

I hear you on the crazy ramp up in duration from the OS Sat rides. With you being on the trainer it is 100 times worse. So hard to ride that long inside especially with the intensity part. I would guess the coaches would think 3:15 instead of 4 hours is absolutely fine. I was only able to get in 4 hrs because it was outside and I had to get home. I would have quit 2.5 hours in if I could haveimage

I don't do 2 days in a row either so again you are a studdette!!

I have to move my rides all over the place. I do next Sat ride tomorrow. 3hr ABP one Thursday and fast speed one in a TT race I am doing with Tom Glynn next Sat. I "AM" the modifier but it is how I can get them all in.

This jumping straight into IM training is a shock. This race is early. Kind of makes me wish I had done more long stuff this winter on swim and bike. It is less a physical issue and more a mental one. I had grown to enjoy shorter duration workouts.
