IMSG 2010 week 3 of 12 Training and MOJO thread
OK party people. I will squish it all down to one thread each week and we can post here about training or anything you want. I am trying my best to keep in touch. This is what is cool about EN, the virtual training together. Helping eachother along and building eachother up to the big race.
So please join me
I took a big FAT REST day today. Drove to the pool at 4:45am, into the locker room with my girlfriends but had zero energy and just wanted to sleep, so for the first time ever... I turned around and went home and slept until 8:30!!! I feel so much better!!! My friends called tonight to check in on me. Such great girls. They were proud of my decision and so was I.
Track in the AM.

Looks like lots of rain for the week, so one ride outdoors is great to get out of the way early in the week.
There is also a swim test in the plan later in the week. I tested in the fall, so hopefully there will be some improvement in my swim times. We shall see!

I rode outside, for the first time in months, on Sunday. What an amazing difference it was for my motivation. On the drainer (trainer), I was never able to hold my outdoor FTP watts. Or, if I did, it would only be for a few minutes at a time and never for the 10 or 15 or 20 minutes suggested by the workout. Same with the 30/30s. I am bad, and have not retested my FTP in some time, but my last test many, many months ago suggested my FTP at 300w. For my 30/30s, I would feel like I was about to die to keep it at 340s to 360s. For my 10 minute or 20 minute work, I felt lucky to be at 270s (with a rare 280s to 290s thrown in for a quick appearance).
Outdoors, this was all different. I felt good holding sustained wattage over 300 (and even over 400). Either I did not have the mental toughness to push like I should indoors or what I have been doing inside is showing up with my outdoor riding now and that is why my watts were doing well. Either way, I was pretty happy.
Back to the trainer tonight, since rain projected all day today. Will not get a chance to ride again until I meet up with folks for the IMSG course preview. I'm flying in late Thursday night.
Everyone have a good week.

Unfortunately I did have a mishap this morning. Half way through the swim my left shoulder and neck started hurting really badly, I stopped after another lap and try to stretch out but couldn't. I gave up on swimming after I realized I can't really turn my head without feel a lot of pain. It feels like I slept on it funny but the feeling didn't come until half way through the swim. I hope this gets better and I can swim on Friday. I was feeling super tired this morning, should have been smart like Carrie and slept in other then forced the workout. Now I have to nurse my neck and shoulder for the days to come....
Can you believe it is less then 10 weeks away? total craziness!
Wei
PS Olivia, I hope you are feeling better!
Glad you took the day of rest yesterday Carrie! You've handled a lot over the last week or so including racing the TT, a bit of extra rest is probably just the thing.
Wei - Do you have someone near you that does Active Release Technique therapy? That might help your recovery immensely. I've had really good luck with that in the past for SI joint issues and for patellar tracking problems. It truly has kept me int the game. Glad you were able to get outside finally!
My whole approach has had to change since last week. I'm taking each day as it comes and going to squeeze out what I can workout-wise. I am feeling generally better this week, but still not out of the woods. Last night it was all I could do to get home and then crawl into bed. I got my swim done in the AM though. After a lot of sleep last night I was up ths morning early and was able to do a run AND most of my swim (until we smelled smoke in the pool (!) Odd, but turned out to just be a wire or something in some maintenance room). Seems my body and mind just aren't handling the load of training and life like they used to. But I'll adapt as I need to...including adjusting my goals appropriately.
Olivia- one day at a time. You're still going to kick booty and take names on May 1st.
Everyone going to St George this weekend, take good course notes for those of us who can't. I'm sure Wei agrees with me.

I still have a bug I have had for three weeks and not been able to kick. I have only been getting about half the workouts in, tons of sleep and eating as healthy as possible. I went to the doctor and he said no bacterial infection or anything that can be treated with antibiotics. Just the stinking virus, he said it is some kind of flu. The only symptom I still have is a dry cough, but it is bad. Funny thing is when I run or bike it expands my lungs or somthing and I feel real good and no coughing. While I am complaining… all the fruit trees around here are all blooming so my allergies are kicking in to boot. I will quit whining. I went to the doctor hoping to get some magic pill and he basically repeated what Stark said to me in the Saint George thread, main forum “I just need to harden the fook up”. Hope everyone else is doing well and hammering out the workouts!
I've noticed I'm becoming tired almost 24-7. I think it's a combination of increased weekly training and staying up each night fairly late to see the Olympics. Anyway, I'm still pluggiing along. Last week I did 5 hours on the trainer on the weekend and got most of the suggested workouts in. Everythings coming along with effort but I do see my body adapting as needed in preparation for an IM.
Looks like many of you will be in SG this weekend for recon!! Very cool, can't wait to hear about it. ( leave out the gory details
Tom B, sorry to hear about your illness. Brutal and for so long, uuugghh!
Wei and Allan, getting in some good work there. I personally do whatever I can and am happy with it.
Olivia- way to rally and keep moving forward.
My training is funky this week. Way off kilter. Skipped pool Monday and slept. Tuesday track was great but FAST and I pooped out. Legs felt worked that whole day. Was running too much at 5K pace which was faster than the plan so shame on me
Today Thursday was supposed to be my long run but I skipped it. Slept in. Need to rest my body. Let my back stop talking to me and then get back
at it. Sometimes we need to step off the training mill take a breather and then get back on.
Talk soon,
Carrie
It looks like Tom B., Olivia, Allan and Coach Rich, plus me , will be in St. George later tonight. We plan to ride the bike course tomorrow (hopefully not the entire 112 miles) and then run a loop of the run course Saturday. We'll get a good look at Soldier Hollow Reservoir and the entire course. I'm sure we'll have plenty to share. Hope all is well. I probably won't post anything until next week.
Have fun.

I'll fill in the gaps from week 3. In total got in 3 x 3 hour rides. 1 swim and 3 runs, one of which was a 5K as part of a couples relay. No long ride and no long run but I am still here and doing the best I can. My right low back has been a problem for a few weeks now and it is hindering me. I am being treated for it and learning to adjust my pain scale of what I can tolerate.
The Couples Relay is a very cool race. Steve and I defended our title from last year and won our combined age category of 80-99 years with a time of around 37:40 for a 6.4 mile course :-(.( we improved over a minute from last year) the 5K's end up being around 3.2 miles each so we knew they would not be exact for a Vdot test and opted to wear garmins and figure out our splits that way. I ran a 19:47 for 3.1 and Steve ran a 16:50 for 3.1. I revalidated my Vdot and improved 3 seconds. Steve took off 42 seconds!!! He probably bumped into the 60's for Vdot!! Have not entered it yet. What is amazing to me is he is 52 years old and running like a college kid!
The finale to our week was our daughter breaking her arm while Steve and I were out on a bike ride Sunday afternoon after the couples relay. We hired a sitter for 4 hours and during that time she fell at the park and broke her radius at the wrist. What a sick feeling when we got home and they told us what happened and said they were trying to call us. uuuggh!! Sometimes you can't hear the phone. They waited 45 minutes for us. Then it was off to the ER and then yesterday getting a cast put on. She is 6 years old today!! Poor baby!
Onward to week 4...
