EM 2010 who's in, take 2

Hey, since we now have an official forum thread, I thought I'd reach back out....

Thanks for the advice (I think it was Chris, Chris, and Kitima)!  I did EM last year - but was winging it with a goal to just finish... so I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can about race prep and race day execution - and hopefully improving.  I'll definitely be checking out the wikis and podcasts, etc and start thinking about that ASAP!

As some of you know I'm a Jan OS'er who's 2 weeks behind (on the bike).  I'm planning to exit OS in a few weeks to do 6 weeks of HIM prep to get ready.  My initial plan was 4 weeks - but I've had a few set backs since last August and I'm not in the condition I should be or want to be so I think stepping it up will be good for me.

I do have my hotel situation covered... staying in easton.  Actually, I booked 3 rooms knowing some DC Tri folks would be racing - so far 2 rooms are spoken for so if you need a room (double, with a fridge/micro), let me know.

Oh, and I'm not sure how local any of you are, but once I look at the HIM plan, I do expect to get out to Cambridge for a couple of pre-race bricks.  I'm sure some DC Tri peeps will come, too... I'll let you know about that if you can make it.  I'm really glad I did it last year.  I rode in just about every condition imaginable... crazy humid, super windy... and luckily, race day the ride conditions were great and the sun didn't come out til the run (and I melted)...

happy friday rest day!

  • I'm in. As most know I'm coming off a calf injury too, so just surviving and not re-injuring myself is goal #1 for race day. I'll be driving up with a friend from OBX but I plan on finding somewhere to stay with friends who have family in Cambridge (well, that's my plan and I hope it works out anyway!!!). Last year I stayed at a B&B just a few blocks from the race. It was AWESOME to be so close and in such a nice comfy home. But I gave up my reservation for this year because I didn't think I was going to do EM again.

I'm really looking forward to seeing some more EN Jerseys on the run course this year!
  • I'm in. I'll be with a group from my local tri club, including EN'er Joe Ruiz. We're staying in Salisbury. Will be my 3rd Eagleman, but the first time I'll have any high expectations. First two EMs were bad weather... First was crazy wicked hot and the second was crazy wicked windy.

  • I'm in! Staying at Holiday Inn Express in Cambridge. Looking to improve on last year (was my first HIM) at 5:59:09 (as 37:41 / 5:04 / 3:00:04 / 4:16 / 2:12:07). Won't be able to do too much of a taper as I'll be at the end of week 6 of 12, training for IMLP.

There will be a big group from my tri club there as well. Hoping to meet all the Team EN peeps.
  • Im not racing but i am doing the Lubbock HIM 2 weeks later. would love a group to train with though since I don't think many people are doing Lubbock.
  • I'm in, this will be my 3rd EM! Becky, do you still have a room availabe? If you do can you PM me the info k8tirgirl@hotmail.com? I live in Alexandria, Va and would love to do some training on the course. I am off Memorial Day weekend and was considering going then if anyone is interested. Looking forward to meeting some EN peeps!
  • This will be my second HIM, well provided I survive Florida 4 weeks earlier.  Hoping to go sub 5:30 but really have no frame of reference to bast that on.  Coming down with a bunch of my local guys.  I wouldn't call us a club, more like a gang, kind of like the Hells Angels!

Staying at the Hyatt(?), because that is how I roll

The Hyatt is NICE!!!! Had victory dinner at one of the restaurants there last year.

Yes, I ordered the most expensive thing on the menu!

"Victory Dinner" is a term we use at my job for the last group meal of a trade show, I carried it over to my tri-group-trips.

  • @Kate, et al... I'm hoping to ride Cambridge Memorial Day Sunday - did it last year and it worked out really well (with traffic, etc).  That said, I haven't looked at the HIM plan to know what we should be doing that weekend.  If all goes well, I'll get out there at least one other weekend in May.   (small world, I'm in Alexandria - on the cusp of Old Town and Del Ray).

  • Wow Cary- that's a nice sized group! Cooooool!

I did a RR ride on the course on Memorial Sunday a few years ago. By far that's the best day of the weekend to do it traffic wise!
  • I might to the RR over mem day wknd on a single loop of the IMLP course 'cause they are so much like each other (not really, but Im trying to get time on the placid course.).

Word of advice, do not go to the brewpub the night before your ride.  I did that last year and lets just say the ride didn't go too well.

  • I'm in (again!).  This'll be my 2nd EM.  Did a cheap motel last year but this year we'll be staying with a friend whose house is literally yards from the swim exit. Would love to do a RR on site but family weekend commitments shall prevent.  So I'll be back to doing endless laps around Hains Point for my RR (thank gawd for the iPod).  Hoping to improve on my 4:55 from last year.  Looking forward to meeting lots of ENers at the race!

    -Chris

  • @Chris...glad to see another local - I'm sure I'll be out at Hains, too... once I can ride safely I plan for that to be my first attempt (definitely not until Cherry Blossoms are gone, though).  Sorry you won't be able to make a trek to Cambridge.

Still not sure when I'm exiting OS to start HIM (either the last 4 weeks or the last 6 weeks of HIM prep) -- either way, I'm hoping to get out to Cambridge at least 2x, Memorial Day Sunday is ideal, so I'm hoping that will work out again.  I'll start a new thread for that, for those of us within driving distance (albeit, a long drive for me)...

  • Just wanted to say a quick hello to all EM particiants.  I am new to Endurance Nation but not a Newbe the the sport.  This will be my 4th year doing the Classic, and I look forward to seeing everyone down there.

  • glad you checked in, Scott!
if you go to the Eagleman tab, there are a few threads there... most notably, depending on where you live, at least 2 of us are heading to Cambridge this Sunday morning to do the RR on the course.
  • sounds like fun.  Question.  I  am unable to make it down to do the course, but I have the exact course via GPS on my Tacx trainer.  Do you think it would be better to replicate the course in the flattest portion of Conn. I can find or ride indoors on the exact course on the trainer?

  • IMHO, I'd opt for outside... but with that in mind, if you can't find a place to ride with headwinds/crosswinds the whole way, I'd find a hilly route - not flat. Some of those strong winds will knock you back from 20+ to 12mph like a killer climb. A drainer ride or a "normal" flat course won't prepare you for that.
  • Scott,

It's not a "hard" course, not a lot of admin or turns, just dig in and go, you're much better off riding outside this time of year. If it were January I'd go with the Tacx.
