Week 9: Big Training Week with Race Simulation Brick
I've noticed the forum chatter coming to an almost stand still in the last few weeks. I assume we're all busy ramping up our mileage and preparing mentally for the big task ahead. It's been quite a journey! I don't know about you but I'm a little nervous about trying to fit in all the workouts listed this week and then be ready to go for Saturday--Race Simulation. I've had a tougher time absorbing the workouts lately and have chosen to drop a few here and there. What about you guys?

I have a new respect for Ironman athletes. The past few months I have been really struggling to get all the work done. I have had to drop a workout or two every week.
Between family and work commitments, it has been harder then I thought. Although there have been several times when I have felt I am in way over my head here, I am excited. I cannot believe we are less then four weeks away.
No time for sure. This past week my legs have been DEAD. I haven't been able to hit the numbers on the bike. I cut Saturday's ride short by an hour.
I think this is probably how we should feel about now. The accumulated stress is adding up, but taper is only a week away. It will be "go time" before we know it!
I've been keeping tabs on the water temps and Sand Hollow Res, and it is only at 52 degrees.. Hope it warms up 5 or 6 degrees in the next 4 weeks. I imagine it will if we have some warm weather.
Mark, I'm right with you. My legs have been toast too. I too, cut the 2nd long bike ride for week 8 by 1.0 hour and couldn't come close to the numbers prescribed. I'll likely skip the speed work today on the run too as mentally I'm just needing a break and I don't want to jeopardize Saturday.
Sand Hollow sounds cold, I'm sure it will warm up a little. We've had an unusually cold late winter, early spring in southern Utah.
I like your attitude and committment about keeping tough this week before we start tapering. This is the BIG TRAINING WEEK and our last chance to pack it in.
So are we supposed to actually do 2 75 minute bikes on Wed.....An FTP test and then later another 75 min with lots of FTP work? I was originally thinking the second bike was a substitue if one were to bag the FTP test and and just use the FTP you've been working with.
I have a hard copy of the plan (beginner), one workout is for those with power the other is for those training via HR. I don't think you do both it is one or the other. To be sure you could shoot a note to the coaches... but just in case we are supposed to do both I am not going to ask
It's a typo, you either do an FTP test or just a workout, but not 2 x 75. There are no double bike days in EN!

Thanks! I assumed so.... and am thankful for it!
I'm going to bag the FTP test and do the workout as I would probably test below my current numbers given the fatigue in the legs and the fact that I will test indoors.
Chiming in here before I get suited up for my Race sim ride....and to kill some time to let the temps warm up a bit. It's only 34 degrees out right now here, and I'm justnot interested in dealing with that coldness.
Anyhoo....I have most definitely modified my training schedule to suit how tired I felt. Been my survival strategy throughout. Have really had to move stuff around in the last few days (as well as next week) in order to accommodate new job responsibilities. Just have to accept all of that for what it is. I'm definitely ready to be done with this training and just get out there and have fun on race day....then live a life of leisure for a month after!
What's this about the water temp??? 52??? Ugh! That is likely to bring my circulation to a complete halt within 10 minutes! Can't some engineer come up with some sort of modified electric tea kettle dealio to warm that water up a bit!? Just to 63-65ish....I'm not asking for a lot...
Good luck on the race sims, all!
@ Olivia... Just checked and the water is up to 55. I think they update the numbers once a week. If the weather is warm over the next 3 weeks, your vision of 62 may actually be a reality. I think we are already in okay territory. It will have to be in the upper 50's low 60's come race day.
that is good news on the water temps-where are you checking, this looks like something I would want to watch closely. I am with Olivia-sub 60 degrees is nuts

Scroll down to Sand Hollow State Park. I think they only update it periodically, but I haven't been able to figure out the time... I'm thinking weekly. I first started checking mid March and it was 42 YIKES!... it rose rapidly to 52 and then to 55 this week. I think we will be into the very high 50's or low 60's come race day.
