EM - HIM Week 6
Hi,
not sure if this thread will catch on or not... but thought I'd give it a try (since I've really enjoyed by OS weekly training threads).
Today is my first day in the HIM plan ... so far, umm... well, so far it hasn't happened yet. It was cold and rainy this morning and I just couldn't drag myself out of bed to run for an hour. I will do the swim tonight (the bag is packed, the workout is safely tucked in a ziplock bag so I won't forget the drill). Since tomorrow is the "light" day, I'll do the run in the morning -(I already have my alarm set and have set my phone alarm, which I'll leave in the living room to force me to stand up) and the swim in the early evening after PT for my hand.
Hope everyone had a great weekend.

@Nemo - congrats on the brick this morning! woo hoo! I don't know if I could get up early enough to do more than 90 minutes before work (I have to leave my house at 8am to get to work on time... that means I need to be in the shower close to 6:45 to have a chance).
I did my first EN swim last night... speedwork. Wow! I've done speed drills before but usually do recovery immediately afterwards - not swim easy and then recover... It's darn hard to swim easy when you've just gunned it and your heart is beating like mad.. it took me a lap just to regulate my breathing... I'm glad I did it... and I wasn't too far off the time mark - the 60 minute workout took me 63 minutes, I was happy with that!
I did get up at 5:15 to run today, amazingly, but standing in my living room in the dark I decided I just didn't want to. I think I just don't enjoy running in the dark alone (I should note that the 35mph winds were a contributing factor). That's not to say I don't/won't do it, I just wasn't feeling it today. So, I'm going to rejigger my HIM week plan a bit more - yesterday's run tonight, do the brick as scheduled tomorrow morning (riding in my living room at 5am I can handle, and it will be light by the time I need to run) and do today's swim tomorrow night. If my legs are shot in the morning and/or for Thursday's long run, well, then I'll have learned my lesson. I think turning on lights as soon as I get up might help, too... just standing upright isn't enough
.
I did manage to get out of bed and into the pool this morning in time to get the swim & run done before work. It certainly helps that I work from home- all I need to do is shower & dress. I can sit at the PC with a wet head in sweatpants or shorts all day and no one will care!
I had a great run last night... legs felt good, head felt good... but I missed the brick this morning despite my best intentions. grr... I just couldn't get to bed. I'll brick tonight and still plan to get yesterday's swim in. either tomorrow morning or afternoon (depending on the weather and when I decide to do the long run). I will get back into a morning routine one of these days! Darn it!
Hey! Hope the run went well Nemo! I did the brick when I got home - and it felt good!
It's telework day for me today so I hit the computer a bit early (technically my shift starts at 8), and I plan to take the extra time and head to the pool at 8 for Tuesday's endurance work. I wrap up at 4:30 and will head out for my 2 hour run then. I thought about it this morning, but for any run that length I like to eat first... and need to do that about 1.5-2 hours early... just didn't want to get up at 4:30 on my work from home in yoga pants day.
I WILL be caught up today! Woo Hoo!
I modified the "long run" today because I thought 90 min would be too big of a jump from where I've been so far. So I went for 75 min with 2x10' intervals. Those intervals are still really slow compared to my old self, but it's nice to work them in just the same. Sloooowly starting to feel a little "normal" again.
Nice! What you're doing is definitely working so stick with the plan! I programmed my watch for my run it's nice out (although still a tad windy) so I'm looking forward to it later... I think it's 2x12 with lots of Z1 time before and after... that's been harder for me lately than the speed work - I hate going that slow although I know it's good for me. Anyway, did the endurace swim FINALLY! 3400m in 1:04:30. All I have to say is that after about 2500 the last stand alone 400 and 300 were supposed to be faster than they were in the bigger sets before - seriously? After only 10" rest after the 500? Whatever... I had it in mind but my body just wasn't cooperating.
Apparently it was member appreciation day at my gym, so I grabbed a bagel and a banana... got home to toast it and have it with blackberry preserves and a nice cup of coffee. Yummy... back to work til PT... then more work til it's time to run.
I hope other folks are checking in and having a great training week...
nice job, Kate... yesterday was gorgeous! I probably should have only done 1:40 myself... my legs were tight! I haven't run that long since October (before I realized there was no way I could do the marathon...running without one working shoulder was not a good idea).
I did Tuesday's swim in the morning (3400) and did the scheduled 2 hour run at 4:30 when I got off work... the calf was a bit bothersome but not terrible (have a few knots to work out). The hammie was a bit tweaked but also not terrible... but I could feel a hot spot and a blister coming on (didn't body glide my feet - mistake)... I finished... and chose to not run this morning. I did a lot of foam rolling last night and knew my legs needed a break. Walking down the stairs to the metro (I'm the top of a 4 story garden style condo building) I knew I made the right decision. I will swim tonight - and do the RR tomorrow. Probably go to Hains Point. A friend from DC will meet me for an hour in the beginning and Dan will drive in to finish it up with me and may continue while I do the run. Not perfect but not bad ... better than I hoped that's for sure. And Dan can bring me cold water and my fuel belt with Infinit for the run...
I listened to the bike execution podcast last night rolling on the foam... not helpful, unfortunately - because I am an HR athlete. Some good things to think about, though. I hope to listen to the run one tonight... but not sure if I'll get it in. I need to look around to see if the HR bike execution guidance is on the wiki... I'm sure it is, heck, I may have already printed it out... need to check my EN info folder.
I got my swim done this morning. But- I must confess that I just can't do the full workouts right now. I know 2000 meters is more than enough to get me ready for Eagleman- I just can't see putting in 3000-4000 meters right now. It would take me at least 90 minutes to complete those workouts and it's just tooooo early in the season to be staring at the black line for that long. I gotta save my sanity!
