RR's in Cambridge?

hey all, I took a peek ahead and see that we have a RR at the end of week 6 (I can't remember if it's Sat or Sun - 5/1 or 5/2).  Curious if anyone would want to trek to Cambridge to do it there?   I won't go solo (since it's a 2 hour drive each way), but if folks are game I'm game!

Planning ahead:  If I did my math correctly, it looks like our last RR is Memorial Day weekend and I'm definitely planning a Sunday trip to Cambridge - not sure if the RR is Sat or Sun... but because of traffic, Sunday is the FAR better day to make that drive so I'll jigger the schedule if necessary to make Sunday the day...

I start HIM training Monday (picking up at the beginning of week 6), looking forward to it (I think).

  • bump, someone's gotta be doing this!!!
  • Count me in for Sunday Memorial Day Weekend. I will have to check my schedlule but I may be able to do the weekend of 5/1 also. Do you have a cue sheet for the EM course?
  • It's a 5 hour drive (each way) for me I'm not going to be down before the event.

Cue sheet is on the tricolumbia site: http://www.tricolumbia.org/Eagleman..._Sheet.pdf

  •  Course sheet is good to have, but course is very well marked on road, didn't even pull mine out ;last weekend.

  • Same as Cary- it's a 5 hour drive for me to do a RR on a course I can probably do blindfolded. Not really worth the drive for me (but I'll be planning a trip to MD some time this summer to ride with you guys & see some hills before IMoo!)
  • thanks for posting the cue sheet, Cary.  As Tracy mentioned - the course is very well marked (I've never used a cue sheet)... the road is spray painted in either red or black with "EM" and an arrow.  The only word of caution is to be sure to follow the EM marks and not the CM marks (that's Chesapeake Man, a full IM).

Let's take them 1 weekend at a time... let me know if anyone is game for next weekend....

Not thrilled with making the 2 hour trek, but there aren't many places I can actually go out and ride uninterrupted for that long here - the bike trails are way too busy with bikers, walkers, runners, and those who are trail-etiquette-impaired.  Other options involve traffic, stop lights, etc... we'll see... I'll come up with something if Kate has to work next weekend... but I'm planning on Mem. Day Sunday!

  • Weekend family commitments (e.g. coaching kid's soccer games, etc.) will likely prevent me from doing a pre-race ride in Cambridge but if schedules change I'll check in.  Boy, I hope it ain't too windy on race day.  That one stretch last year was NO FUN.

Fat chance!!!  It's always windy for Eman.  In fact, I thought last year wasn't nearly as bad as usual!  But then again, maybe I've just learned to expect it.  You almost always have the wind in your face for that final stretch when you are most tired.

  • I'm with Nemo... I've now ridden Cambridge 5x (including last year's race) and race day was by far the best.  In fact, I LOVED it during the race, I had no wind at all until about mile 40... and by then I just couldn't complain about it because I was so far ahead of my expected time... I think my amazing wave start helped... instead of being close to last, the 35-39 W were like 3rd to start.  My friends who started long after me had a much, much different ride.

Last weekend was probably the worst I've been there for.  Not sure if it was because I couldn't get comfy in aero b/c of my hand... but it was just brutal.  Headwinds and crosswinds ... I can't believe I didn't get blown over.  But knowing I got through it with about a 17mph average made me pretty happy considering my low bike mojo.

  • Wind was bad for the last third of the ride last year. Without a PM i'm pretty good at maintaining an effort, once that wind kicked in my speed noticeably went down. Check out the speed on one hour splits for a 3 hour bike leg at EMan last year: The difference if NOT from fatigue.

  • Hi all... a local DC Tri clubber just told me about a century ride this weekend in Cambridge (six pillars).  there's a 37, 56, or 100 mile option.  Thought I'd pass the info along since it's a RR weekend for us (although not many of us are within a reasonable driving distance).   Per another thread I wasn't planning to head that way alone, but I am more strongly considering it now that I know there will be some support along the course (and food at the end ).  So, assuming it's not closed, I'll do the 56 (no stops except to refuel, such a shame to let the pb&j's go) and then run... and then enjoy the post ride festivities.  Hopefully the DB will make the trek and do the 37 miler -- heck, he has an OLY coming up... just don't think he's ready to jump from commuting to work to 56 with me... so this would be ideal...

Oh, and Nemo and I have been chatting in my attempt to create a weekly training thread a-la OS...so check it out - it's a subtopic in this forum, I think... not sure where I put it...

  • Thanks for the link to the cue sheet. It may come in handy Memorial Day weekend. Three things you can count on t EM: the bike will be hot and windy and you will feel like you are melting to the pavement it will be so hot on the run! I am off this weekend but just can't justify the ROI to drive 2 hours each way to ride the course. I am thinking about riding the 50 mile option out of Rileys Lock on Saturday, you can run on the C&O canal after. It is located off in River Rd. It is NOT flat, I would describe it as rolling. I can print extra cue sheets if anyone wants to meet up. I was thinking of and 8:00 ride start. It is approx 45 min from Alexandria,Va. I am open to any other local ride starts if anyone has other ideas.
  • For those in the Baltimore/DC area, if anyone's looking for Eagleman-like conditions for an RR but closer than Cambridge (by about 30 miles) and still on the Eastern Shore: I found a fantastic ride that starts just over the Bay Bridge. Just off 50 near Wye Mills, you can pull off at Chesapeake College where there's lots of parking. It's about 27 miles from there to St. Michael's on Rt. 662 and then Rt. 33, with almost entirely flat farm roads with almost no traffic there and back. I can send a cue sheet if anybody's interested. I actually used it for my RR for IMAZ last year, because I was looking for flat, Arizona-esque conditions.

  • Eric, I would love that cue sheet. Can you PM me it at k8trigirl@hotmail.com?
  • @Kate - not sure if I can do it this weekend, but would love the cue sheet for that ride.

@Eric - ditto - that soulds good to me... can you send me a cue sheet as well?  thanks!!

  • Becky- The Rileys Lock cue sheet is available on the DC Triathlon Club website.
  • @Becky and Kate - Sent the Wye Mills to St. Michael's info and a link to a google map I made. Let me know if they don't come through.

  • thanks Eric! I got both!
@Kate - how funny, you know more about the DC Tri site than I do.... I'll check it out.
  • the next RR comes over Memorial Day Saturday... I'm planning on heading to Cambridge to do it on site... but I'm gonna go SUNDAY instead (to avoid bridge traffic).  I did a ride there last year on that day and the traffic wasn't bad (knock on wood for the same luck).

I'm gonna plan on an 8am start time.  I will post something to the DC Tri club web site... so there may be a few folks there, representing various pace groups... I'm hoping, depending on weather, that once the 30 minute WU is done I'll be rolling at close to 19-20mph...

    Hope you can come along.
