gearing

so i am doing LP and have got some questions regarding gearing. I have a 53/39 and 25/12 and i am a pretty weak cyclist. It will likely take me 7:30. Should I be changing out my cassettes. I am 'bike challenged' so you can't speak too simply in your response image

Also I am considering buying a powertap. I think I would just buy the one on the wheel already. Would changing my gears affect what powertap equipment I buy??

  • I would recommend swapping your 53/39 crank for a compact 50/34, at the very least. You may also want to put more gears on the cassette too, maybe a 12/27. I would think a compact crank and a 12/27 would be enough. I have never ridden the course though.

If you purchased a PowerTap wheel you would need to have the cassette swapped onto it. That's it.

  • What Matt said; believe it.
  • Welcome to EN Lesley, if you're here to execute the race the EN way (I'm sure you are), you'll definitely want to do what Matt recommends above. If you get a Power meter, once you spend some time with it, you'll learn why you really want to spin as easily as possible on those LP hills.
  • Lesley, you may want to go over to our old EN 3.0 Forum and do a search for compact cranks. You'll see a ton of discussion on the subject.
