IMSG - DNF

Just a quick note in case anyone was wondering why my blip went off the map.

I got sick at mile 60 on the bike, but thought one good 'up chuck' would make me feel better, so I opted to try the 2nd loop. I made it just past the time tracker and unfortunately threw up again, so I knew at that point my day was shot. I went to the medical aid at mile 70 to get help and was transported back to the main medical area near T2. The staff there was great and gave me some type of wonderful pill to calm the nausea, just wish I had that while I was riding.

I wander over to the T2 area to see the runners take off and I saw Sheryl and Wei come through, while waiting for my g/f Susan to make it through to let her know my status. After catching up with her, I went back to the hotel to get clean up and then back to the finish line later that night to watch the finishers come through. I saw Wei and Tom B. finish while I was there.

Congrats to all who made it through!

  • Sorry you had a DNF. Looks like it was one hellacious course. I'm sure you will live to suffer another day!

  • John, I'm so sorry. We did have a handful of DNF's and there's still a few folks we don't know the details of yet. Thank you so much for checking back in with us so we know your OK.
  • Sorry about your DNF - This sounds like something that happened, rather than something you did to yourself - there are some things that our out of our control. Glad you are alright.
  • So sorry to hear that you got sick, John. It had to have been tough to leave the course, but if you'd tossed your cookies twice, it was the right thing to do. I'm glad you were feeling well enough to get to the finish line to watch for a while. That's great of you to get out there! Hope you're all better now, and thinking about some fun things to do with your fitness!
  • John-it was a tough one, thanks for cheering us on-it was so nice to meet you and Susan.  Best of luck with the rest of the season

  • Oh, man! What a rough day! It sounds like you did the smart thing. I'm glad you seem to be in good spirits!
  • So sorry about your DNF! I hope you are feeling alot better and have sorted out what happened with your GI upset on the bike.
  • John, sorry to hear of your DNF, but glad to hear of your intelligent decision regarding your health! You know the team backs you 100%! You WILL live to fight another day! I have no doubts about that! Kudos to you for getting as far as you did, on that tough course!
  • Hi John

You are not Alone, this what happened to me, about mile 19 I got light headed and nauseous. By mile 40 I had vomited 3 times and by the third time I turned around I had a paramedic asking me if I was OK. I told them yes and that I needed a few minutes. They said they needed to take my vitals. I vomited again. I was unable to keep down any nutrient. My vitals apparently weren’t good as the EMT was saying to his partner to load me up. Wait....Load me up? For what? EMT said Sir we are going to the hospital. No I don’t need to go. I can’t go. My wife will freak if she hears I’m in the hospital. By the time I finished arguing with them I had lost over 45 min so I made the call to DNF

    :-(

  • John and Cervelo:

Rats! Sorry to hear the day turned sour but glad to hear you're both doing well. Like nemo said there were tons of DNF's at IMSG. We'll have to wait for the official results to be posted to look at the trends of the day that led to what preliminarily looks like a high percentage of DNF's. Do you both have other races on the schedule this year for some redemption?

  • John and Cervelo that sucks but glad your both fine. Unfortunately, one of my brothers was in similar situation. The deal we had before the race was that is someone DNF'd and was going to come back we all had to come back. On Sunday afternoon, he registered for next year. I cannot leave him flying solo so I signed up as well. Anyway, I wish you guys luck on the rest of your year!

  • John and Cervelo,

That truly stinks. Could it be possible that those swim conditions just threw the physical body off so badly, and all systems were effected? I certainly have no idea, but, man, something went wrong with lots of people. It had to place a role. Had to.

Easy to say, but live to fight another day. LIVE being the operative word. I'm sorry for your disappointment, truly, but very glad you are both OK to tell the story. Congrats always on the courage to take on the training, make the commitment, and toe the line.

  • Registration is still open if any of you want to add to the data points next year. image

  • Hey, you did the right thing...just glad to see you are okay and back on track...
  • Sorry for checking in back so late to respond, but Thanks for all of your support!
I just have a few olympics and maybe one IM relay that I have scheduled for the rest of this year as triathlons.
My main race focus now is the USMC marathon at the end of October, seeing how I haven't done a marathon yet!
I'm going to try and get into IM AZ for next year.

Best wishes to all of you in your events!

    Cervelo,
I'm sure that your wife was more than supportive and understanding of the situation.
We just have to regroup and hit it again!

    John
