Home OutSeason (January ‘10)

Going rogue

Howdy all -

It's been a while since I've been around.  My dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer back in Feb and I've had a lot on my mind and been traveling all over the country the past couple months.  I basically quit looking at what the OS plan called for and just did what fit on a given day.  I've been around long enough and have enough experience to know the general program so it's not like I've been doing completely random stuff.  The past 2+ weks I've been in CO Springs and I brought my road bike so I'm getting good riding but you can't turn a corner without a climb or descent staring you in the face.  Steady intervals are all but impossible out here so I've just been going out and hitting the climbs for 1-2hrs at a time.  I'm sure my FTP is up since I last tested but I've been turning in IF .85-.9 rides with VI 1.2-1.3 consistently.  I'm really curious to see how the climbing and several weeks living and training at 7000ft translates back to sea level at home.  If plans hold I'll be heading back next Monday for a week or so and plan to race Columbia Oly.  It's a hilly course but must be child's play compared to what I've got out here.  Anyway, just wanted to check in with the Jan OS peeps  and give a quick update.  Hope everyone is making progress and staying safe.

  • Joel- So sorry to hear about your dad. Very difficult time I am sure. Best of luck with your training in the mean time.
  • Welcome back to EN!
  • JS -

Welcome back and sorry to hear about your dad. Cancer seems to be fookin' everywhere these days; I wish him and your family the best. Your approach to training is spot on, and I think you'll be just fine for the OLY. Just keep that big picture perspective rolling all season and you'll be fine!

  • Joel,

Sorry to hear about your dad.

Good job keep up some training duringa stressful time.  I'll be looking forward to your race report to see the results of the rides.

  • Welcome back.  So terribly sorry to hear about your dad.  Kudos to you for fitting the training in as you could despite everything else!

I'll be at Columbia, but not racing - when the withdrawal date rolled around I wasn't sure what my hand would be like and if I'd be able to handle hills.  I made the right call - only last weekend was my first ride that didn't result in days of stiffness/soreness.  Anyway, I'll be out there sherpa'ing for my DB - and plan to be in my red 4 keys shirt.  Suzanne Kinsky is racing... and I think Tracy Wood is, too... if you're sporting your EN Kit I'll be sure to see you and shake my cowbell at ya!

Are you in the DC/VA/MD area?  I'm guessing so bc you're doing Columbia - perhaps we can get some rides in (Suzanne and Kate Green) are also local and Tracy isn't too far away...

  • I'm down in Virginia Beach...too far from DC to hook.
  • gotcha... I'll be down there Labor Day for the RnR half. haven't registered - don't know if I'll run it this year (that will be prime IM prep time), but I go every year with friends... so they may be racing and I might be off doing my own training thing. Who knows...
