Interesting RestWise observations

So far, I've only missed one day of tracking my data.  I've seen a few things stand out:

  1. high correlation between sleep and score.  A lot of the stuff doesn't change that much, but sleep has a big impact.  Gotta strive for more of it!
  2. It does seem to pick up on overreaching: I went for a pretty epic ride in Red Rock Canyon outside of Vegas on Saturday, absolutely crushed myself on two loops of the road, followed by quite a bit of drinking that night.  Next day, my resting HR was sky high, and sleep was poor.  Result?  RestWise score of 60%, or "You are not sufficiently recovered, or you are overreaching.  You should consider resting".  The program was absolutely right about that.
  3. No data = bad!  One day without data, and it puts in my score as Zero, and tells me "You are showing multiple signs of overtraining.  Consult with a Medical Professional as soon as possible."  Found this amusing
  4. I'm not sure how sensitive I am to energy and/or mood differences, unless it's really bad.  I don't think that I've put in a "very good" on either scale yet.  Maybe I'm just not a morning person...

So far, I think there is definitely value in monitoring sleep and resting pulse.  All the other factors contribute, but I've yet to see the big value.  On the day where I needed rest, hours of sleep and resting HR were enough to tell me.

The experiment continues...

  • My observations are about the same so far Mike. I would say that my numbers tend to be a little "sticky" and only a significant change (like I rate sleep as "poor" or get less than 8 hours) does there seem to be a dip in the scale.

That said, I certainly did have a big dip after my 3 day ride weekend and it accurately predicted I needed a rest day.

  • I didnt put data in for 4 days, and it didnt seem to notice when I added the 5th it said I was rested and ready.. which is true. Since I had taken 2 days off after Wildflower. but thats a bit different then what mike has seen.
  • Today was the first day I got 100% all systems go!
    are others getting that too?
  • I have never received 100%. Not even when I started. And I usually sleep under 8 hours, so that might be it. But on weekends when I sleep 8 or 9 hours, it also doesn't make a difference. As more data gets entered, it does seem to be more accurate. Although I ignore the advice as I usually have a built in rest day coming up.
  • I'm at 70% currently. I think the 2 days of hard riding back to back doesn't help. It would be nice to import WKO data so they could see just how hard someone worked relative to their abilities and be more comprehensive and less subjective. That said, maybe all they need is subjective data and we are too technical? Time will tell.

I expect to improve after we get some hot days and the pollen count reduces significantly. Allergy season wipes me out even when I was a couch bum.

  • I've logged every day and found that it seems to be most affected by my energy level and mood ratings which are very subjective. Often if you asked me the same question when I first wake up and then 1 hr later after breakfast there would be a big swing. Just not a morning person I guess.

  • @Vince- I was thinking the same thing today. If WKO+ and Restwise could be overlapped or share data, we would get better data.

@John- I agree, mood and energy seem very important.

Muscle soreness also impacts my level. Seems since I am usually not sore, if I am, then I get a lower score.
  • In regards to mood and energy: in the spring during "grass and tree" pollen time, both my mood and energy are off until we get multiple days of 95+ degrees to kill off the pollen count. So, for me those are questions that a variable that depends on the season regardless of workouts.

  • One other thing, it doesnt read under 50 for HR. When I first wake up it borders along 51 or 52, but if I go into and out of sleep I can see it blinking at 50 when I wake.. If this is athlete driven it should go a little lower I think.
  • Mine goes below 50. It flashes at 50 and below, but half the mornings my HR is in the 40's.
  • Ah thanks, that should be explained. Mine must be at 50 (it blinks so I figured it was confused like me)
  • Interesting-

When I awoke this AM, I had to pee really bad. I put on the sensor to get HR before getting out of bed. Lowest read was 52. Went to pee, weigh and back to bed as it was too early to get up for good. No drinks. Out of curiosity, now that my bladder was relieved, I  rechecked my HR, it was 45!!!

So when will they add a "How bad did you have to pee when you woke up?" category?

  • HA HA HA! OK, my resting HR is typically in the 70 ballpark! I've never had to worry about it not registering!

PS- today it says "50%, You are not recovering sufficiently.  Rest is strongly recommended."   Ya think?????

  • I have and older heart rate monitor for checking resting heart rate and it works well. Stopped using it for a while because I have not really changed my routine. It is interesting though I went to the doctor to get a annual physical for work. They took my blood pressure with a machine and I seen the results and started laughing and the nurse asked me what was so funny. I said the lower number on the machine, she said that the bootom pressure was good and said the pulse number was what I was laughing at it was 46.
  • Is there a machine you guys are making reference to to take the above measurements you speak of?
  • It's a combination of a Oxymeter (I think that's what it's called) and input to an online questionaire. A few of us did this as part of a pilot last year. Check here for more info:

  • Hey guys,

Just curious what your over all opinion of this product was?
  • Short answer, I didnt get a lot out of using it. But, I fell out of using it every day. I was horribly under-rested most of this year, and I'm not sure it really gave me much useful information, as it relies on subjective 'how do you feel' kind of questions as well as objective stuff, so if totally exhausted is your normal, then i don't think it has a way of figuring that out.

They've made a ton of improvements over the last few months, and if they were willing to give me a credit for the 4.5/6 months I paid for and didn't
use, I'd try it again. But I wouldn't expect them to do that, and i don't really think I'd spend any more of my money on it.

  • Thanks Mike. I guess it just comes down to getting enough rest and eating right.
