  • Gonna be a tough week here due to over the top heat!! Currently 91 with heat index of 99. Runs are going to be taking place in the dark of the early am. Did a fair amount of climbing this weekend on the bike. Lot's more to come!!
    Hope everyone is doing well!
  • Marianne must be off the grid....

  • Feel like a slug here! Got in very little last week (recovery from KS + daughter's wedding). Was hoping for ride early Sat but rain had different plan in mind. thankfully rain held off and wedding went beautifully. Volunteered at local Oly tri yesterday- same hot, hot, humid weather here and spent rest of day playing catchup on errands/housework.

Today.... AIP 5:40am for a light swim- 1800 yds. Threat of lightening almost had us kicked out midway but thankfully it was false alarm. One more week and my 12 week IM schedule/plan takes place. Goal for this week is to get all the housework/errand etc stuff done since little time once I jump off the high dive next week. Time to get my mental mojo on!!!

On the coolness factor, came out of the Y after swim to a light sprinkle and a spectacular rainbow right over the Y. Surely this is a good sign!
  • Hey Guys, after being disipointed/pissed off with my swim performance in the sprint tri I did yesterday. I also got up and got AIP at 5:30 this morning. I very quickly rediscovered what I already knew ... the harder you hit the water the harder it hits back. I was trying to swim hard and muscle my way through the water and I was going slow and working a ton. So I stopped, took the watch off and didn't look at the pace clock and did 1000 M of drills only. Then finished up with a 250M freestyle in 3:48 (right on T-pace) and the effort was much easier.

In hindsight I'm pretty sure in yesterdays race I tried to muscle my wa through the 750M and thats why I was slower than I have saw all year and was working really hard. Once I again I need to just swim in my box and stick with my form like RnP saw. Not sure why this just doesn't get through my skull.

Lesson learned is that instead of just swimming to warm up before a race, I think I am going to try doing drills only to see how it goes.

Anyway, normal week of training up for me until Friday. I am going to take Friday easy (maybe swim only) to give my legs a break before a Half Ironman distance race on Saturday.
  • Matt,

It is odd, I had a similar experience this morning.  I went  out to do my [8X 50 and 1x 400] x 2 in the 25 yard pool.  I can't make it to the 50m pool tonight.  When I hit my first 400, I felt like I was working way to hard and not moving anywhere.  When it came time for my second one, I decided to not look at my splits and focus on form.  Wouldn't you know that I went faster than my t-pace with less percieved exertion.

I think it pays to remember that maybe compared to our other two sports so much of swimming is dependant on form and not overall power.

  • Matt:

Sorry that you weren't happy with your swim performance! I read somewhere that drills are a good thing to do to warm up before a race, I think it reinforces technique which is key to swimming efficiently and fast.

I got AIP today but much later than I wanted.  I don't even remember turning off the alarm clock that's how out of it I was.  I'm hoping that this will be the start of good training for me.  I was laid out most of last week from being beat up by Rev 3 and getting a bad skin rash that turned into an infection which required antibiotics.

I'm getting a bike fit on Saturday and hope that will dial me in for IMWI.

On a separate note: I got this link from a friend and it's got pretty good video of IM MOO:

  • Week 8 is off to a inglorious start for me, wanted to swim this morning but hopped off my flight at about 10am and it was striaght to work from there. Last week I officially transitioned from HIM 'detour' plan and back into week 7 of the 20 week plan for WI. Followed the transition plan up through Friday last week but took Saturday and Sunday completely off, was traveling straight through the weekend. Freshly off the plane and back home today I'm looking to tackle week 8, my first actual week that I'll be on my IMWI plan. Feeling slugish from too little time on my bike and much time crammed into planes but the weather here is is a complete drag so far, my only access to a pools are outdoors and they don't so much care for lightning.
  • Briefly checking in  -- I've decided to taper a bit this week and do the last week of the OS as written, instead of super-sized, plus swimming, since I'm racing High Cliff this weekend. Swimming? All this talk of focusing on drills in excellent! I thought I was in serious trouble because I haven't done very much distance work. Now, I am just going to chill and try to have fun with my swim. I breathe to the opposite side of the High Cliff buoys, so, thankfully, Jo taught me how to compensate for that.

    AIP later tonight.

  • Transition week for me.  Loved not having to sbr this am.  Was taxi though for boys needing to be at swim practice and WSA classes.  Week 12 IM for me starting next Monday.  Oh and HHH this Sat with Sheryl W.  Beth thinks HHH is a fun ride, Shery and I aren't so sure   guess we will find out on Sat!

  • This is also a transition week for me, post EM! I'll write a race report soon, to sum it up HOT does not begin to describe the run. When I finished I checked the Weather Channel on my phone and temp was 92 with "feels like 107"! I changed my plan to the 12 week IM plan and looked ahead to next week, OMG! It is time to crack the whip and get serious. Have a great week everyone!
  • Thanks for starting this! yes I did remember but snuck out to take Rudy (now back home) for a run/walk and then got caught up and forgot!!! so glad you picked up my slack!

I had an epic weekend of training and still on a high, I rode 9 miles to our local century and then rode back, so 121.5 miles, my longest ride EVER! woo hoo and very hot and windy... I have uploaded my power, it's first ride and can't make heads or tails out of it, I don't think it was my fastest century.. and my Garmin read 103.9 miles, will post details later... but basically no drafting, aero, flat, windy and my old saddle put back on, worked like a charm!! my new cleat snapped on my same shoes, so same cleats was so stiff that I fell over while standing ready for the start, skinned up my knee at mile 0... I can see the funny side of it!! so rode with a blooddy drippy knee! my right foot was on fire after mile 70... I drank Carbo pro and stopped just twice at mile 50 and 70 and at mile 50 mixed in some pickle juice with the Carbo Pro and that will set you FREE! ran ou tof water at mile 97 but I know I can go 6 miles with no water and so when I finished made a beeline for the water! felt great and rode home still feeling good, no stiff shoulder or neck to speak of. dropped my nutrition bottle, a first for me, ran over it and it didn't bust so by mile 11, I had wrecked, couldn' get clipped in until mile 1.5!, dropped the bottle and also during the century missed 4 turns and had to make U turns, also a yellow crop duster plane flew over me and I got some of that on me, my sunglasses etc, which made me laugh. I was pretty much by myself most of the ride, just out on country roads, going over bumpy roads! kerplunk, kerplunk kerplunk!

Then I packed up, drove 4 hours and went camping with my 21 year old son, and my 9 and 11 year olds kids and the Irish Setter Rudy.. it was pretty warm and all the wind of the day was GONE!! went to sleep with the RV playing Country Western twang until 11:42 p.m.!! yep sure did. subtitle
"Willie and Johnny Cash lullaby and Ironman to sleep"
I only had a yoga mat and a comforter for padding underneath me but I guess pretty tired having got up at 5 a.m!!

next morning, I head out for a mt bike race!! my 3rd one ever!! this was terribly funny as I had accidentally packed my husband's large bib shorts!! I had no other so raced in them! baggy.. as I am a XS in men's!! Then they didn't guide me correctly so I wasn't on course!! very funny cuz I finished way too short mileage! Then I ran 4.5 miles on the trails to cheer on the expert level peeps... got back and had a bite to eat and packed up my kids missing my 1st place beginner females over 40 award, cuz we went to the lake! and swam in it... with the dog! oh yeah, ... showered in a small hot campsite shower and back home..

today, I took the dog for a walk and a bit of a run.. at 8:30 already 87 degrees and I was dripping wet with sweat, so hot that he laid down in the shade!! whooped, did some lunges and etc... and then back on home..

took kids swimming and I swam 1.5 hours lap after lap just enjoying the water and then got out to do some abs and pushups... hit the shower and then Walmart where I just spent $200 on some food! unloading now and about to cook dinner!!

my weight is down!! ha ha.. so hot here anyways... if I can keep it, it is my desired "race weight"... I did drink plenty and weighed 1.4 more pounds after my century.. yep I am so tickled cuz on Thursday I had ran 13.5 miles.. so right now??!!! two months after my thryoid crash??? I can swim the distance, I can bike the distance and I can run 1/2 of the distance!! nutrition is working, weight is down and I feel Great.....

note I will crash on Thursday, historically!!!

  • Post Saturday Ride

Before:  I had ridden 9 miles and it was already hot and windy.. and it was ony 6:30 a.m. when I got there!  never mind, I got to say hey to some friends! and of course laugh.  I wore my team jersey from my mt biking team cuz they paid for my entry! $30 and also good friends of mine!  plus it had the jersey pockets for those long rides... (Rich does this too, wears a roadie jersey on a race sim)  me - copycat! not my car either

    After:

back at my house, my husband greeted me and took some pics!  Note the Garmin slips on my wrist without a wristband so I tried one and it still slipped around.. very annoying.  will try something else.  When I run with it without a wristband it cuts into some nerve and hurts, I prefered the old velcro wristband!

The tent I slept in with 3/5 of my kids and 1/1 of my dog!  the lot was slanted and rocky so we put it on the driveway!

Arkansas has many lakes!  and we were camping down below

5:40 a.m. on Sunday and I wake up!!  but later on was rewarded with the sunrise in a quiet campground

  • Wow Marianne, congrats, I'll freely admit that is longer than I have ever ridden in my life, I think I did ~105 one day at Ragbrai last year and thats it for me. I'm sure that will change all too soon this summer though.
  • Like many others I'm just starting up the IM plan but had a reasonable weekend of riding. I'm working nights for this month and next so doing most of my workouts after a 13-18 hour night at the hospital where I may get some sleep. Saturday morning dawned with about 2.5 hours sleep and I headed to the Pac Velo ride. I knew riding with Erin we got dropped basically first mile. Well I stayed through the first 4 miles and then let them go as 21-25 mph to start was too fast for me. Gives me a goal though. Flatted at 22.5 miles so also turned around there. 45 miles on Sat. Came home and found they were doing construction on our house on Saturday too so little sleep at home. Went to end of year party for dept Sat evening and then in to work with zero sleep overnight. Home and got 4-5 hours before heading for the crit. Only other two women registered were ones that had dropped me on Saturday, joy so they moved women to master's men and I went with the beginner/juniors. Was kicked off after the neutral lap when it immediately kicked up to 28 mph+, my watts were over 200 trying to stay with the guys. Didn't happen so solo'ed for the duration. Patient care, 2.5 hours sleep and then home to construction. AIP this afternoon for the first time in what felt like forever and it was good. Bike's loaded in car with all my stuff(except a water bottle I just realized) to do FTP test in the morning. It'll be my first one outdoors so that should be interesting.

    Marianne- awesome ride

X2  I'll be laying a little low this week in recovery mode and just trying to catch up on all the internet traffic I missed (no access all weekend).

Marianne- I don't even have the energy to READ the post about your ride much less consider doing it!  WHEW!

  • Goofy week here. Biz partner is off playing politician in Boston so I'm flying solo in the clinic which has been the story of my life since getting back from ToC.

I'm definitely back on a steady training schedule. Swimming only 2x/week (1 is OW which is awesome), bike is spot on, but...my run has been a struggle lately. Still getting back up to that 4x/week frequency! I keep missing a brick run here or there and motivation to run when I get home at 7:30-8ish is looooooooow. image

Planning a normal week this week with some small tweaks- Patriot 1/2 on Saturday. should be pretty funny and definitely a good "scrimmage" for Providence.

  • Leigh,
Good luck at Pat riot. Running is SO overrated. You'll kill it. Have Dave (the human GPS) Boyle map out a couple of fun runs. You'll be fiiiiiine. image

  • hey nowhere in EN does it say ride 121.5!! ha.
okay we have talked about this before,,, but when are the race sims?? I have written down July 31 and August 28th, so confirming. m
  • @ Matt: Those Swim Ebook drills can be a drag, but after doing 3 weeks of them (after ZERO swimming since last summer) I was back to the same swim sped as when I swam Master 3-4 x a week. What HIM are you doing this weekend?

@ Joanna: Hope your infection is gone!

@ Marianne: Great epic weekend you had! Can't imagine doing a mtb race after riding 120+ miles.

@ Leigh: You are gonna rock Patriotman.

@ Lynnette: Your posts remind me of just how exhausting residency was. Good on ya for getting the training done.

I took yesterday completely off to recover from the Lake Placid rally. So back in the swing of things today with a run after work. Going to Richmond, VA this weekend for my DH's A-race, Xterra East Cup. The forecast is for high 90's and humid so I'll be hydrating like it's my job on my long ride/long run out there.

  • M--I'm with Nemo! Pooped jsut reading that! Rock on, GF. Always impressive.

I am doing the Patriot Aquabike on Saturday. It's a D-list event for me--notice I did not say race. image I am not tapering, just a few LP tweaks to the week. It is hanging over my head, and I just want to get it done. What's true for me is that during IM years, I just like to train. Don't like to do events, pack all the stuff, do this and that. I like my trianing routine, then get me to the start of the IM swim. It will be fun to see the EN folks, so I'll do my training ride on the course and call it a day!

Otherwise, I'm doing just fine and dandy. Trying to back off the computer time a bit, so if you see me AWOL a bit, it's just time for a break. image

  • taking a rest day today, aquabike sounds good, glad everybody is back on board. we are tackling housework... since I was gone. posted my Garmin report in power forum. talk at ya later. m
  • I think I have a mild 24-hour training curse. Or my slight taper is getting to me. Last night, I bailed on the swim, because I had the worst stomache ache after work. So, I didn't move for hours. This morning, I was fine and did my scheduled 3x10 and then did some weird, tweaky thing to my knee while getting off my bike, which is feeling better after being up and iced this morning.

At least I got the 3x10 in?

Linda, I'm with you. My race this weekend is not exciting me. But I am looking forward to testing out the shiny tri bike in its first race.

  • Hang in there Beth. Taper does suck.

I'm getting back into the training MOJO today after taking a week off after my HIM two weekends ago. Gearing up mentally for the next 13 weeks. image
  • Beth... I have absolutely zero taper ability, so I understand eactly what you mean. That's the reason I only taper once a year :-)

Hang in and you will be fine. You are more than ready for HC.
  • Race rehearsal dates-
    1st July 31
    2nd Aug 21
Revision to Ironman plans this year put them 6 and 3 weeks out.

    Lynne
  • Well, I still can not believe I got the first post in again.  I had just finished my most recent FTP test and I was sure the lack of oxygen to my brain was making me see things.    I finally had a good Tuesday workout.  Because of my work schedule, I do all of my intervals on Tues and I have to do them on the trainer.  Even though my signature says my FTP = 270, It was a lie.  It should have said pre shingles my FTP was 270.  I left it there as sort of a motivator.  My past 2 tests have been horrible failures with results between 257-260. It has been really difficult to get my legs moving lately.  I think the fatigue from getting going was really impacting them.

This morning I had a mission.  I wanted to return to 270 or very close to it.  In the end, I powered through the 42 minutes on the trainer and ended up with an FTP of 276.   Finally a good result.  I am moving in the right direction again.

I will be moving a few workouts around in order to complete my monthly testing.  I decided to last minute do a 1/2 IM this Sunday.  It is going to be my first race since IM CdA last year.  I can not believe that so much time has passed.

    Todd

  • Finishing up a few more days of 2 week transition prior to starting 12 week IMOO plan.   So looking forward to structured training again, although have put in a lot of fun biking miles.

I really did need the transition after giving my legs a good trashing in the Mooseman 70.3.

Heading up to the White mountains of NH tonight w/ 4 biking buddies for 110 + miles tomorrow, so looking forward to an epic day of riding.

Will be much more involved in this forum now that it is time to get serious and focused on Wisconsin !!!

  • Todd -- Congratulations on the new ftp!

Bob - That ride sounds like a lot of fun.

30 minute run with strides in the books for me this morning. I actually ran to the gym, did some core work and ran back. The nice thing about this short workout is that I get to drink my coffee in the kitchen instead of on the train. Maybe tapering isn't so bad.

  • Nice Work Todd!

I went out for my long run this morning and the warm up at easy pace never felt easy so I pulled an audible. Instead of the planned 2 x 15' @ TP, I went easy and did 2 x 3 miles at 6:15, 6:05, 5:55 ... my planned run paces for this weekends HIM. It was challenging but not too tough and I racked up 14.1 miles in 1:30. The 88% humidity sure didn't help, but I'm glad my body is getting exposed to it early on this summer unlike last year.

@Kitima - yes the ebook swim drills work and I do them every single swim. I just have to force myself not to rush through them and really focus... as i'm way to type A and competitive for this drill stuff. If I have a watch on or a wall clock in sight I catch myself timing my drills, which is not the purpose. The HIM is High Cliff in Appleton, Wi. Beth, Dr. D, and Jim H will all be there as well.
