  • Swim and core work today. I am never excited about swimming until I actually start. I love the feel once I get going.

Busy weekend with family obligations in NY. I knew I would not be getting most of tomorrow's bike done and none of Sunday's. But then... very upset about a work situation and need to burn off some adrenaline. Gonna get on the bike when I get home and do some ABP riding. Tomorrow morning I'll do some intervals before I hit the road. If I get home at a decent time on Sunday, maybe I'll get another hour of ABP, but 8 hours of driving this weekend makes it hightly unlikely.

I'll beon the drainer. All of you out on the roads- Be Safe!

Forecast says rain in the morning....I just may be on the drainer as well!  4 hours...oh my that is mentally taxing!!!

  • No way 4 hours! Just do the intervals and you are done. 2 hours max. RnP do not subscribe to long hours on the drainer. I knew I'd get the intervals done, so I wasn't feeling too bad about missing the 75-80%.

Really, well I knew that about the OS, but I thought once IM training hit that it is important to get in the "long" ride?  So you think 2 is enough if on the trainer?

  • Knocked out 2700 in the pool this afternoon. Planning on 3.5 AOB into North Ga starting ;0700 manana!

  • Sticking with the plan on this end. This is the biggest run week I've had in over a month so will behave on the bike to absorb those miles. image

  • Sorry to say it, but I'm glad I don't have to do a 3.5-4.0 ride tomorrow... i'm sticking with my 2.5 hours of work and calling it good. When you are all tapering and recovering though I'll be putting the miles in.   (i'll try to put in just as much work or as many miles in a shorter time though to push myself)

I also got AIP this monring for about 2500M and at lunch got an hour run in at MP for something a little different...it was tough. Thanks to 80+ degrees and direct sun I lost 6 pounds in one hour! I'm glad this whole sweat rate thing was brought up recently as I seem to be losing a whole lot more liquid this year than I thought I was.

I'm now tracking all my runs for a week or so to come up with an average, but things are not looking so great as i have never taken in more then 24oz of water in an hour and so far my average is over 4 lbs lost per hour.

  • Who knew such a little guy could sweat so much!! :-)

I met my Team TT buddy this morning to practice our strategy for the race tomorrow. I'm gonna try to get into the Ocean tonight before the fishies start feeding. Otherwise, Saturday is the TT (a little over an hour of all out killing myself) and my "plan" is to do the Sat ride on Sunday. But honestly, I might just do the Sunday ride on Sunday- I don't know if I'll have much left in my legs after the TT!
  • Good luck at the TTT, Nemo!! sounds like a blast. image I wouldn't sweat the sat vs sunday ride...you'll get more than enough work in on Sat!

I'm with you Matt. Averaging 3-4 lbs lost in an hour in the heat. no wonder I always got in trouble when it was warm. I don't take in nearly enough fluids.
  • So I'm 30 minutes into my long run last night as I pass a nearby park and see two young ladies in bikinis (it wasn't a good bikini visual) with an unleashed chocolate lab. I run by them and the dog follows me. They call him, but he's having more fun running with me. I run 10 minutes up the road and turn around (so does the dog) and pass the girls again. They call to him some more. He ignores them and continues to follow me. They become distracted by cows in the field and stop to take pictures. I keep running. It's time to do those 8 min HMP intervals. Two HMP intervals later, the doggie is still with me. Cute little guy, but just running in and out onto the road then through someone's vegetable garden then into another neighbor's pond. Car's are passing me and I'm getting looks of "Could you please control your dog?!" I'm just about to a busy intersection with this dog following me and the owners are nowhere to be seen. So I turn around and run back (dog still following me) to the park. No owners seen. Good thing the doggie had a tag (his name is Mocha) with an address. I run up and down his street looking for his home (not one house or mailbox had a house number! what is up with that?) when finally his owner pulls up in a truck. She thanks me for bringing Mocha home and told me that if I ran for 20 miles he would've followed me the whole way. If Mocha's to be my new running buddy, he's got to be on a leash!

There's rain the forecast for tomorrow---so I'll likely be on the cyclocross bike on the trails for my long rides. No PM, but it's not the trainer.
  • Kitboo- I think Mocha needs a new home!! And I think he's figured out where it should be too!
  • Not a good week for getting the workouts in. Had to teach PALS(pediatric advanced life support) and NRP(neonatal resuscitation program) to incoming interns- new interns, yeah! Means I'm closer to being done so rather than 13.5 hour nights at the hospital it was 17 hours and then they are still constructing and will be for another month likely at my house. So I did Mon run on Tues, Weds ride yesterday(Thurs) and will bike/swim/bike tomorrow.

First race in the North Shore Swim Series from Sunset Beach to Pipeline surf break, 1 mile if you navigate wellimage Will ride 20 miles prior to race, swim and then ride 30 miles after. It should then be nap time but that will depend on construction or I'll end up coming back to hospital early just to sleep. Seriously a second bathroom isn't worth this but it wasn't our choice particularly not on the timing.

  • EEEEK! Made it thru week one of IM training. I have training amnesia from last year, this volume pop has me tired. I was able to get in all of my workouts this week...some were not pretty in this heat. It is CRAZY HOT in Washington DC. I was on the bike before 0700 Saturday and Sunday and was melting by the end both days! Any of the ladies use a camelback on the bike they would suggest? I need to carry more water for these long rides, even doing loops from my car it's tough to have enough water with these high temps! I hope everyone had a great week of training. Marianne and Nemo I am sure you both nailed your time trials! I am going to lay on the couch in my recovery tights and watch the updates for IMCDA!
  • Pretty good weekend overall. Rode 3.5 on Sat complete with FT intervals and the work sections. Felt fine This morning hit the bike again for 3:10 in the saddle, but could not face playing the watts game. Sometimes I just need a mental break from it, and it was today. Picked the hilliest loop around here (which my DH has been after me to do for months--he loves that kind of riding), and just practiced staying steady and not spiking. It was nice just to ride for a change--still with a purpose, but not chasing the numbers on the PM. Ran a very feeling-good 25' after.

Keith is packing my bike for Madison as we speak. image I am staying out of it. He is an engineer, and you cannot imagine the extra work he is putting into this. It's like we're sending nuke through Fed Ex. I'm grateful, but, trust me, it ain't coming home all packed up like that.

  • Fun weekend!

I rode a loop of IMWI ABP yesterday because I realized doing intervals and reading a map at the same time are not in my current cycling skill set. Since I was a little bit short of three hours, I seriously punched up the last half hour and rode really hard --- like zone 5 really hard. It was fun! After the race, Jo Cobble and I participated in an urban adventure race in Madison -- in costume. What a way to get in a brick run!

Today, Jo and I were set to ride a local century, but got caught in a very, very nasty thunderstorm and turned back. There was long lunch. I ower the drainer intervals.

  • I spent A LOT of time on the drainer. 1:45 Friday night- mainly ABP, 1:45 Saturday morning- FTP intervals and ABP. Then I drove 3.5 hours to my sister's. Ate junk food, stayed up late, and sort of slept in. Then drove 3.5 hours home, napped for 1.5 hours. Finally after 5 pm I got back on that thing and did another 1:30 mainly ABP. I was never so glad to do a BRick run. At least I wasn't on that DRAINER! I didn't get 7 hours of riding, but 5 isn't too bad.

In 5 weeks, I do it all over again. This time around I decided to meet my family obligations even if it impacted my training a bit. I just didn't count on how exhausted I would feel.

Looking forward to the swim and run tomorrow.

  • Good weekend of riding.  Did 2.5 Sat am on trainer ( Michele, took your adivce ) those intervals are always hard!  Sunday am did 3 hours on a new route and worked out well.  I usually hop in the car and drive some where...but Sunday decided to brave the traffic for a spell and finally ended up on some decent county roads, which led to some even more decent trails!  Sunburnt again....this time my upper back.  After HHH, my forearms and thighs, blistered and I even had sunscreen on....I wonder if that stuff really works   Anyhooo it's Monday am and another day of training

  • Great job finishing the first of 12 weeks of IM prep!!! Looks like everyone nailed the weekend workouts and had fun doing it (except for those trainer folks...how do you do more than an hour on that thing this time of year???).

I had a great day on Friday with a 1.6 OWS swim at sunrise then my long ride on a beautiful, warm afternoon getting in 4 hours and 84 miles at .79 IF and concluded with a nice 30' / 4.25 mile brick at 7:05 avg pace. Felt really strong all day.

Saturday was a rest day and spent the whole day having a great time with Andrea (wife) and Drew (2 year old son) playing, swimming, picnicing, acting silly, etc. We all needed that "together time".

On Sunday I did a local Sprint Tri (700m swim, 14.5 mile bike, 4.5 mile run). I hit my goals (AG win and finish time) but felt like crap the whole time, especially on the swim. Oh well, I have to keep reminding myself that sprints are not my game this year so finding the fastwitch muscles for a race like this is tough. I added on 1 hour of ABP riding right after the race but got cut short due to a thunderstorm.

I'm happy with how I felt during week 1 and am really digging being back to IM training again. On to week 2...
  • Smart Kathy! Plenty of riding to be had for holiday weekend and tri camp. Can't wait to see you there!
