Home Ironman Wisconsin 2010

10 weeks to IMWI!

Leigh- heal well and take the needed time.

I hear you all on the tourons except there is no season to ours. Its fair game all the time and then the local morons like tossing beer bottles out alongside the road. Beautiful place to live and ride but in no way shape or form is it safe.

I did well on all the weekday workouts last week but missed both rides this weekendimage Was crazy busy overnight at work so needed the sleep more. Micropreemies getting stupid sick plus new interns that need babysitting means I've been very busy at work. Amazing what a difference 1 day makes in the workload when that day is July 1st. I know I was that dumb once too but...its painful when I'm trying to signout quickly to get to a ride especially when I've had little sleep and then find its raining out. Sleeping happened, riding didn't. This upcoming weekend has the second North Shore Swim Series race, 1.2 miles at Waimea Bay, and then I'll ride home from that. Modified vdot test with Lanikai Bike Path 8 K on Sunday morning.

  • Lynne some nice workouts coming up for you. work does sound busy glad you are taking care of the babies.

I slept in this morning. as fireworks had us all up late. not much else to report!! but yet I haven't drank all of my coffee!! talk at ya later
  • It's MOO Camp week!!!! Yesterday, I made my "Nemo" excel packing list and did the official 4th BBQ thing. I will knock out my long run tomorrow and then drive to Louisville to meet Kris and spend tomorrow night.

Leigh, SO glad you are alright. Hopefully, my wreck in the April counts as my quota for the year.

Gotta fess up, I rested yesterday. Wanted it, needed it. Plus my knee was talking to me. Although the actual meniscal tear does not hurt, the Baker's cyst REALLY swells and bothers me. Just want to get to the line folks!!

Off for a run. Everyone have a good day!!

  • You and me both Marianne. Woke up this morning with a little GI distress and decided to just take a relaxing morning. So I'm watching TDF and resting. Will get the run in this afternoon- gotta love having the day off from work AFTER the fireworks! Oh- and I updated my packing list yesterday too- will probably get a little head start on some of that today as well. Can't wait to see you all in Madison!

Congrats on the new Vdot Lynne!

  • Lynne: It's that time of year---new interns! I too am glad you're taking care of babies. My dad is a retired pediatrician...and while so many other things about practicing pediatrics frustrated him (like the parents of those cute babies), the patients always made him smile.

Gina: Hope your knee is behave for your run!

    Michele: Nice weekend rides!

So I've had 2 miserable workouts in a row this weekend. The run---okay, I chalked it up to heat, allergies, new super sedating anti-histamine. Yesterday's ride: no power no where...not from the lungs or the legs. I thought I'd give it 30 min to warm up. Nothing. Then I said,"Suck it up, Boon! Give it 60 min to warm up..." Nothing. I'm talking barely able to hold IF = 0.7. I felt like A$$. So what would you guys done? Keep going for the full 4 hours or hang it up at 2 hours and live to train another day?
I wasn't dehydrated; I had fueled properly before and during the ride. I've stopped taking Zyrtec--if I have to have a runny nose and itchy eyes for the rest of the summer, then so be it. The brain fog from that med is terrible.

Heading out to do today's run...a new week, a new day = a better workout!
  • Did long run today instead of Thursday due to weekend tri.   2:14:00   18 miles.  Hip has still been sore since last crash so kept pace more consistant, did not hit HMP.  total run averaged 7:28  Pleased with outcome especially with rising temperatures.

Off to the beach to relax.    Thinking about getting in an ocean swim later in the day.

  • thx all for the well wishes. image

after a few days for it all to settle in, biggest problems are my left arm and right neck. road rash is cake so no problems there other than some potential scars. left arm = cranky. shoulder still puffy and warm but I think it's just contusion type stuff and my elbow has a fun new click to it. Definitely don't think either are major, just time and patience to let to let them heal. my neck is whiplash-like. doesn't bother me to look around but trying to roll over or sit up from laying down is just downright funny. Dave said I'm getting old. haha. the good news is, legs are fine. Ran for an hour on Sat and two hours on Sun without problems. felt good to move and helped loosen stuff up. Swimming and the aerobars are going to be an adventure this week and Providence is looming on Sunday so it will be entertaining if nothing else. I might be in transition for an hour trying to get my wetsuit off since right now...a sports bra is a workout all itself.

I did go back today to check out what I hit and look for one of my earrings. What had happened was we were bombing through this little section with no shoulder and a car got uncomfortably close (I live in nowhere NH and it was like 9 am so NO ONE was on the road; it was a kid texting away). I sat up to put a hand on their roof and shoot them the "hey...can we share the road?" look and it was long enough for me to completely miss the pothole I ran straight into. Flipped me over the bars doing 22 and change. The funniest part? that car didn't stop and the car that had to drive around me while I was in the middle of the road didn't stop either.

anywho- really excited to read all about Moo Camp!! remember. lots and lots of details about the course for those of us not going. image
  • Gina...did the same as you yesterday....took the day off!  I needed the physical and mental break.  Today I felt rested and did the run intervals for 60 min, then skipped the swim and got some core stuff in.  Will do swim tomorrow and normal schedule through Thursday, since I will only be at camp for the Friday long bike.  So, planning on the long run Thursday...hoping it doens't interfer with the long bike on Friday...well I guess fatigue these days is where life is at for most of us

Leigh, ouch those nasty potholes!!  They can do damoage that is for sure.  Hope you find your earring and are healing up.  Maybe we should invent a horn for the bike to wake up the texting teens and tourists!!  Stay safe out there peeps!

Leaving Thursday around noonish, so should roll in to the Clarion around 4!  Looking forward to meeting everyone....finally!!

  • Hooray camp week!

I got in a very hot 3x1 yesterday (with lots of walking in between), then went for an OWS with Jo Cobble, who seriously helped me with my swim form. Seriously. Looking forward to AIP tonight.

Kit - I would've bailed after two. If I'm not feeling a ride after forty-five minutes or so, I take it as a sign from the triathlon gods that my body needs to be doing something else.

Mostly, I'm just dancing around going Chica Camp! Chica Camp! Chica Camp!
  • Leigh: Your hand on the the roof of the car---so much for the 3 feet passing law in NH. WTF?! 2 year ago I would've said, "I can't believe no one stopped after you fell." I think you and I live in similiar NE demographics...I can't tell you how many of my half-blind patients with dementia (as in have no idea whom or where they are) DRIVE during the day, especially in the morning. It's possible that second motorist never even saw you!
Well, I'm glad to hear you're on the mend. Healing, anti-inflammatory, get full ROM vibes coming your way!

For all y'all who live where it's Tarzan hot (Kris, Marianne, Gina), props to you for training in it! I did my run yesterday in 92 degrees. I did every stinking interval, but needed to walk the entire 4 minutes in between to recover. It was a small victory for me! Yipee!
Then when it got even more hot and humid later in the day, I went for a mtb ride---just for fun because I missed being in the woods. There's not much a nice ride on dirt can't fix!
  • Chica Camp!!!! Chica Camp!!!! OK, this isn't the womans forum, but I'm so excited I can't stand it! Looking forward to meeting the boyz too- honest!

I got yesterdays 2x1m run and interval swim done this morning. I'm not nearly the speed I was in 08, but I'm not going to let that bum me out. I'm doing my best to be greatful to simply be able to do any of this stuff right now!

I'll do the Brick tomorrow (someone PLEASE remind me to put those bike shoes in my luggage when I'm done!!). Other than the bike shoes, I plan to be fully packed tonight so I can head out from work at 3:00 tomorrow to get to the airport for the trip. Oh- and I just got the confirmation that Fiona has made it to the hotel via FedEx. I hope they put her in a nice comfy room with a good fluffy pillow :-)

  • I'm looking forward to the Madison camp this weekend also! Can't wait to meet many of you in person.

I got in some good workouts this weekend including a nice 4 hour ride Friday evening where my wife dropped me off 80 miles south of my in-law's house in Michigan where we spent the weekend. Got started much later than I wanted due to traffic through Chicago so I ended up finishing the ride around 8:30pm. But it was a great evening ride with most of it along the Lake Michigan shoreline - absolutely beautiful!

Woke up Saturday morning and did a 5K race with my brother-in-law. I definitely felt the previous night's ride in my legs but I pushed through and hit a new Vdot (albeit not where I think I really am right now).

Did my ABP ride Sunday morning - just over 3 hours and 65 miles. Good ride right at .8 IF.

My body was totally fatigued Sunday night so I slept in yesterday morning (9.5 hours sleep) and felt 100% better. Woke up and ran the 3 x 1 mile Z4 intervals and nailed them.

This morning was 90' ride with 50' of FTP work - I had a tough time with this one not being able to hit 100% on any of the intervals (more like 92-97%). Got in the 40' brick run with 3 x 5' at Z3/HMP hitting the paces pretty easily.

So, there's my "catch up" for accountability purposes from the last few days. Doing long run tomorrow, then swim and a 2-3 hour easy ride on Thursday before heading to Madison in the afternoon/evening where the work really begins - yeee haaa!
  • Sounds like you had a good weekend of training Jim. I'm ready for the Madison camp as well. It will be great to meet many of you there.

Saturday i got a 4.5 hour ride in which ended in the heat. Whew! Lots of fluids consumed on that ride. Sunday I got the ABP ride in a lot earlier and put in 3.5 hours. I felt good on both rides even with the heat.

I put a lot into Monday’s run which left me with not a lot of energy for the pool swim but I made it through. I felt a lot better in the pool today than I did yesterday. After doing the 200 yard intervals I still felt like I had a good pace on the 500yd. I’m going to run tonight with the local CC team during their community run.

Keep up the good work everyone!
  • Good job to everyone for hitting the big weekend rides, I fell completely off the wagon after last Wednesday. I was out of town Thursday straight through late last night attending a wedding out in the NE and have not rode or swam since then. I had my running shoes with me and was able to sneak in a few decent 60' runs but nothing more than that. My weekend long rides had been progressing pretty well up until this point but I've been stressing about missing this past weekend's rides and then heading up to Madison for camp this weekend, I really don't have the bike miles in I'd like but it is what it is. Really wanted to hit the pool today but the weather did not cooperate, will be trying again tomorrow morning, riding tomorrow night and getting in one last run before driving to camp on Thursday afternoon.

  • Leigh: Sorry to hear about your crash but glad to hear that you are not majorly hurt.  I'll be at Providence this weekend so we can compare road rashes, although yours are super fresh.  Like you, I don't know if I'll be able to ride aero.  But I'll help you out of the wetsuit if you're in my wave (#3).

Nemo, Kitima, Marianne and every EN Chica going to Camp, I'm so jealous, but I'll meet up with you guys in September.

My weekend rides went well, even though I got ditched by people I was supposed to be riding with and ended up doing a 112 mile ride all alone.  Oh well, lots of talking to myself but I was just glad to be outside and super glad I did both bike workouts on Saturday as Sunday was even hotter!

    Have a great week!

    Joanna

  •  Oh Leigh! Besides being spooked, that is just down right scary. If I had the time I'd be hanging out on that road looking for that car. But we never have that much time. But I always yell "Hey!" to get their attention.

Got a late start to my OWS Monday. Idiots on motor boats were heading out just as I was beelining for shore since I don't trust them. I DO think they would be drinking at 7 or 8 AM. Anyway- headed out on the run and hit TP. Had to back down from 3 x 1 mile to 2 x 1 mile and 2 x 0.5 mile.

Yesterday the lake was like glass for the swim and I just cruised through. Once again it was just sublime.

Procrastinating getting on the trainer, but headed that way.

  • OK- I bailed on the brick today. Just couldn't get out there this morning for some reason. Bad on me- but all I could think about was finishing packing and getting ready for travel. Hopefully we'll have enough riding in Madison this weekend to make up for it!
  • saw doc today and I have bursitis in left knee cap so on the down low.. been on the DL since Sun for riding and last week on DL for running. =ham/glute still bothersome so now focusing on getting painfree.... I won't be at camp this weekend... just not at 100% and dont' want to further injury so that race day I should be ready! m
  • BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Boo to injuries! Especially since that's now 2 Chicas who had to back out. Get well soon ladies! Marianne, I guess I'll just have to wait to meet you during race weekend.
  • Oh, no! Take care, Marianne! We will miss you at camp!

  • Yep I was SO looking forward to it. like I was just telling my mother. but a good decision. smile. take care of Heather.... m
  • Bummer....now Marianne and Kris!  Guess we will meet up in Sept instead...take care and get well!

Got brick done today and plan on doing the run long tomorrow before I leave....may or may not be a good idea!  But gonna give it a try.

  • uhhh... well I walked 4 miles today! and will swim tomorrow. trying to get left leg to feel as good as right one!! lol m
  • Marianne: I'm sending healing vibes your way!!  You did the smart thing by not going to camp and healing; you'll be ready to rock on race day!

  • Thanks, right now I feel like a slug. amazing how one week of rest will do that to you! smile, I did swim in lake this morning and felt good in the water! slugs can swim ya know! m
  • Just checking in quickly from EN Camp in Madison. We are having a great time, and absolutely missing all of you who couldn't join us! We rode the IMWI course yesterday- everyone doing various combos of the loop (some did one full loop with the out and back, others did two loops, and some did the full course). I rode with Kitboo, Tracy, Gina, Beth, Michele, and we found Linda H and Jennifer B on the course as well for 2 loops of the lolly pop. We treated the day as a recon ride, just trying to observe the terrain and turns to help get our heads strait.

I'll let the ladies who haven't seen IMWI before give their own thoughts. But for me, yesterday was a HUGE confidence builder. I know the IMWI course and know that there's really no particularly big or ugly hills. But I also know it's tricky because the little ones all add up. You have to be really smart and pay attention to be able to ride the course smooth and "flatten the hills" as R&P say. Living in flatlands for 2 years, I was a little worried I'd lost my skillset to ride those kinda hills the right way.

But I realized yesterday I'm not as rusty as I thought. Additionally, I was worried about the small handful of descents (not so much about crashing on them, but more about not taking them aggressively enough). Again- I don't get to do those kind of downhills, especially on Fiona, very often (or ever really!). So I was worried I'd really loose time by taking those too easy. I learned yesterday that while I won't be as fast on those downhills as I was in 2008, I'm not that much slower and I'm a lot better at them than I expected.

Sooooooooooooooo All that is to say, Day 1 done, having a great time, wish you were here!!!
  • First of all- Please heal up ladies! We really want to meet all of you and HAVE FUN together!

So- as someone that had never seen the course before Thursday, I am feeling very good about race day. I will be out on the bike course a loooong time. But I intend to ride very smart and I KNOW it will make the run better.

Realized I have a 12/25 and will be getting a 12/28 before the race. Tried out my new aero helmet- Lazar Tarzid. It was awesome. Felt as light as my Giro and didn't get too hot.

We are going to have a blast on race week/ weekend.
  • Sounds like camp was fun! Does anyone know the total elevation of the Wisconsin bike course? Thanks to everyone at camp that provided updates and photos. Everyone looked great all dresssed up for dinner. Ladies, I think pink race number belts would look cool with our pink race day visors! I did a hilly 72 mile ride today. The rollers were relentless, nothing flat...I was either going up at 8mph or down at over 30mph! I did two loops on River Rd in Potomac, MD. "My face was the picture of pain" by the end. I worked on staying in the aerobars going up the hills as I have a tendancy to want to sit up. It was a great ride, I was calling it "the tour de River Rd" as I must have seen every IM jersey on the roads today. You can tell IM training is in full swing around here! Now, I am relaxing in my ZOOT recovery tights cathing up on the forums. Week 3 of IM training is in the books! Keep up the great work everyone!
