8 Weeks to IMWI

I don't believe it!!!  I get to start this thread this week???? Everyone else must be too exhausted from the 3300 yds to type!

Got my En Chicka Visor this weekend, thanks MUCH to Gina for taking good care of me!  Game on now folks!  Knocked out 4 hrs in the heat & super humidity and only managed to get sprinkled on Sun.  For the chickas, they know I had to duck under a bridge for abt 20 mins Sat during my run when a pop-up thunderstorm took me by surprise.  Had to rearrange workouts last week coming off a funky leg thing going on so rest & test week couldn't have come at better time.

So- anyone know what we can anticipate weather wise (temps) race day?

  • You aint kidding Kris!!! Run done, Swim done, and I think I'll take a nap at noon today instead of eating lunch! WHEW!
  • Great work Kris! I have no idea what the weather will be like race day. image

  • No clue on the weather, but I was thinking about you Kris- getting caught in storms and that was BEFORE I saw your posts. Hoping for decent weather in Madison.

Got in the lake and had a shortened WU/CD since I had to get the run in as well. But I loved every minute of the swim. Amazingly I got the run done and part was on trail. Did all 5 efforts of 1/2 mile at TP/IP. I am switching Tues/ Wed permanently. I can not do bike intervals and run the day before the long run. So road bike on computrainer tomorrow, swim Wed.

Hope we all got the week off to a great start!
  • Just an OWS for me this am. Mondays remain jammed so no way to get them both in and it's kind of nice to ease into the week a little. image

Had a great brick yesterday with some local buddies. PRE through the roof on the run, but the legs felt great. Looking forward to getting out early for the hard run tomorrow a.m! Shuffling this week around a bit to allow for some time to play up in LP.
  • Early case ; work today, so looking down the barrel ; both swim & run later today. Send me some mojo!!

Also, SI  joint seems a bit aggravated so I  am working on my mobilization stuff and using my muscle stimulator. If it's not one thing......

As for weather on race day, based on previous years, it could be ANYTHING!!

  • okay so I did my long run today and about to head out to a 50 m pool for a swim. legs are whooped. hot here! m
  • Gina has the weather forecast right and it typically changes the week of the race just to through everyone off. What ever the forecast is and the weather is the day before the race just be mentally perpared for anything, and hope you get lucky. Remember the worse the weather is the more off an advantage we have within the house by sticking to our race execution.
  • I've been a little off the grid the past couple weeks with being vacation over the 4th, then IMWI camp and then immediately to Vegas for a business meeting all week - sure feels good to be back home and in the routine again!

Sounds like the week is off to a good start for everyone so far. It was a good day for me, too, with a solid 8 mile run this morning nailing the 3 x 1 mile intervals between Z4 and Z5. My goal is always to negative split these and I did just that going 6:08 / 6:01 / 5:54.

Then hit the pool at lunch for 3300m. Man, that 2 x 500 / 2 x 400 / 2 x 300 set was tough but it felt great. Stroke was on today and I nailed them right at or just under T-pace.

So far, so good. Stay focused guys - this seems to be the time in IM training that the mind starts losing interest in the training routine and the body is easily convinced to skip a workout because it's tired. Keep at it!
  • So there's a movie coming out called The Expendables---just about every action hero from the last 2 decades is in it. It looks soooo awesomely bad that I must go see it as I have a weakness for macho meathead action movies. So in the spirit of Rambo, Die Hard, Cobra, Commando,Romeo Must Die...I've been out riding and running during the hottest and most humid part of the day; and have been swimming OWS when the water has been most choppy. Not sure what I'm gaining from all of it besides momentarily feeling like my favorite meathead action hero. image I'm hoping that it will be sufficient sacrifice to the weather gods and IMWI race day will be overcast and 58 degrees.
  • After 82 miles on Sat. and 70 harder miles than I should have gone on Sun. I was concerned about todays run ( especially after getting up in the night to go the bathroom, and thought  "I have to run on these legs tomorrow.)

Felt surprisingly well, crashed on mile 3, did not negative split like you did Jim.  1) 6:15  2) 6:03  3) 6:28

Swam the 3300 yds at lunchtime,  felt tired but good.

Some nagging ailments seem to be healing, and I'm starting to get some speed back.  Definately making a concentrated effort to get some more sleep, whci is helping.

VO2 max bike tomorrow am, that will be a nice change.

  • So Gina- did you get it done? I hate having to wait until after work like that- just sucks!

Bob and Jim- holy crap, you guys are screaming fast!

Michele- I've been bouncing around that Tues/Wed workouts as well. My legs would like a rest between the Ride and Long run, but sitting here after the Sat & Sun rides plus todays run intervals, ugh, I admit I'm looking forward to "just swimming" tomorrow!!!
  • I have a weakness for macho meathead action movies" = me too, I love them too but add in sci fi but not horror. I love war flicks too.

went to 50 m pool that I don't normally go to and forgot was there! and did 3,000 with daughter playing but asking me "how many more?" a hot day here so had a frozen water bottle at lane's end, outside pool so pine needles at bottom .. so ran 12.5 a.m. and swam that. I am going to bed on time today!! for lake swim in the a.m. Patrick approved my week's schedule in gen forum so pressing on! while swimming I had this thought

only 6 more weeks of tng and then the taper! now is the time! m
  • Yep, I got it done!!  I was good once I got moving in the pool. Hit the run on the dreadmill- just too freakin hot/humid ;4pm !!

  • Jim -- Your observation about the mind wandering about this time is spot on for me. I slept in this morning, because I stayed up way too late last night concert-going (Sting) and had grand plans for running at lunch. Nope. Work was a bear, and lunch plans were thwarted. It took a power nap and an iced coffee, but the run got done. And I ran some fast person's 5 x 1/2 mile splits. I realized I was pacing the first one a little on the hot side, but decided it would be fun to see if I could hold that pace, or negative split it -- like Jim.

    1.) 7:24 pace 2.) 7:16 3.) 7:14 4) 7:06 4) 7:02. (Current TP is 8:02)

Head was tired, but legs were obviously hungry.

I'm doing an Oly on Sunday, so I'm counting today's swim and the Wednesday bike/run towards that and do Sunday's bike on Wednesday.

  • Beth, that was one hellva workout, way to keep getting faster and faster.    I think you need to stay up late and go to more concerts more often.

  • Nice job Beth!!

Anyone else feel like the "just a swim" day was really hard. Ugh, I'm tired!
  • Perhaps I  need to try Beth's ice coffee prior to running??? Nice work!!

I  am doing the bike today as I  swapped Tues/Wed early on. The old skool version of this works much better for me in the grand scheme.  Glad to see 30/30s (I  think) on the schedule.

    TIRED

  • I've always liked the 30/30's.  They hurt but they are over quickly.   Did 38 minutes on the trainer this morning at 4:30 for the VO2 max main set, then went outside and joined a group of neighbors for another hour of pushing it hard (averaged just over 24 mph).

Trying to add an occasional group ride to keep up my social graces, as well as a mental break from always suffering alone.

    Will run later today.

  • 30/30's are back?! Awesome. These FTP intervals are anihilating me.
I'm no good for the Monday interval run so I've moved it to Tues.

Bob: Good to hear you're on the mend---doesn't sound like the Lyme Disease slowed you down at all!

Jim: Totally agree with you on losing focus and sucumbing to "Eh, just skip this workout!" I've been so inconsistent this season that I'm feeling the urgency and anxiety of not getting what few workouts we have left done vs. the fatigue that screams,"Please stand down!".

Beth: Nice run! I should go a Sting concert too.
  • Hey Guys ... Nice work getting the workouts done!

I successfully took yesterday off completely and can't remember the last time I did that so that was a big accomplishment for me. Of course that left me in a bad mood and I got up this morning feeling like crap. So went to the pool and just did 2000 yards of drills. Finally felt good towards the end so I did 5 x 100 (30") and averaged 1:13 which is really fast for me.

Marianne, maybe I don't need to warmup much because I never take time to recover. I sure have noticed that after a day off, it takes me significantly longer to warm up the next day (which is another reason I HATE days off).

Race Report from the weekend is coming soon, just need to edit/censor it first ;-)

Don't worry, the content will still be there and I share everything with you guys.  My thoughts just don't always come accross right on the first draft so I have to re-read it and make sure I don't sond like a jerk.  Censor was the wrong word choice, it's more like removing the really negitive comments.

  • Nemo- Yeah, my legs were protesting the 30/30s today. But that could also be because I used the new computrainer, had no idea what my watts should be, and thought I'd just try to keep my regular outdoor watts going. It was amusing only for a short period of time.

I was actually relieved that the ride was scheduled for 60 minutes, not longer. It gets hard to do 2 hour workouts every day!

Did the run and held my pace fine. I always cut the interval short by 1-2 minutes since I have plenty of hill repeats on my way home.

Sounds like we are all in the same place- TIRED! My TSS was -40 today before I started the workout. Tomorrow's swim only day is gonna do me good!
  • I need to figure out a switch as well, because I never seem to be able to muster the energy on Mondays to get a swim and run in. Though it could just be the timing, for some reason the end of the July always seems so hectic. Though listening to all of you get in the workouts is definitely the motivation I need! Nice work! @Matt- I think it's totally natural to be critical considering all the analyzing we do of race execution, doubt you have to worry too much about coming off negative here!
  • okay I am doing the power test tomorrow at 6 a.m., my first. I am tired, whooped and itching to get in bed!!! haven't been getting 8 hours of sleep in a a few nights. glad to know some of you are also that way!! ha. dog days of summer are here, 98 out there which makes packing up my bike a sweaty deal and I need to go out in the garage to do that! also the heat zaps my appetite initially until I get cool. I walked the dog this morning at 5 and I could tell that today was gonna be a scorcher.

Matt, what you grumpy?? oh no. can't imagine! you can put the unedited thoughts of race in here! we won't dissect you or otherwise over analyze! we really would like to learn from any insight you have! I love hanging here locally with what I call fast people. in fact I am surrounded by talent! I like to pick their brains and hear what they do. and if they have something figured out then I listen and normally quite good advice. so share your wisdom even in the race report that might be edited!! smile.

okay signing off. my mind is foggy. husband comes home tomorrow from outta town, son comes home from Guatemala on Friday, college son in too this weekend so tomorrow morning I will make the best effort with available time for training. oh the guy at the bike store saw me riding and told me yesterday that I "looked aero!" and I said was it me?? and he said well do you know other aero chicks out that early in the morning? "UH, no", I responded. so

guess what I am saying is sometimes you got it and sometimes you don't! but at least you are out there! m
  • Ahhhhhhhhh! This week is so crazy for me at work. I'm in ECMO pump training all week at the hospital and then in the animal lab on Friday running the ECMO pump on a sheep. Sorry for the sheep but it's for the good of the babies! Having to shuffle all of my workouts around more than usual. Not sure when I am going to get my swims in. May have to do one Sunday afternoon after I bike. It is steamy here in DC, just got done running at 8:45pm and it's still 93 degrees! The heat and humidity is relentless. Glad everyone's training is going well!
  • oooooh- Good luck with your first Power Test Marianne!!! I bet you knock it out of the ballpark!

Kate- what's a ECMO pump? Looks like I'll be joining you this weekend for fun in the heat and humidity of DC! Hmmm I shoulda checked the weather forecast!
  • Obviously Sting concerts make us faster. Can we hire him to play IMWI?

AIP and just back. I did lots of drills and it felt really good.

    Marianne - good luck!

  • Kate- are you a NICU nurse? Setting the sheep up for a VA or a VV run? We had to mess around getting FAA approval to get a baby with TAPVR on ECMO to the mainland for surgery. It's almost like practicing medicine in a 3rd world country here sometimes. Not really because all we actually don't have is a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon except for 5 weeks a year. Transport medicine for us is not cross town but instead a 6 hour or more overwater flight.

Babies have been bad lately so getting very little sleep. Got dropped off the back by mile 5 of the Aloha State Games RR 28 mi on Sunday. 28 miles, 2100 vertical feet with approx 1000 ft in 4 miles per lap. Subtitle was Pineapple Loops from Hell. Good workout though. Worked late on Mon morning due to a 26 wk admit less than hour before supoosed to be off so went home and slept rather than doing the run/swim combo. Did the run Tues morning, the first with the new paces. Went better than expected as planned pace was 9:07 and was 8:50, 8:57 for the 2 miles. Good news for the night is the 25 wker from AS is not getting here until after 6 am and then I'm off the next two nights. This weekend is the third in the North Shore Swim Series, a 1.6 mi race from Chun's Reef to Waimea Bay.

  • Yesterday I decided instead of going for a run I would take a second day off and be well rested and ready to crush my long run this morning to get my run mojo back. I believe this was the first time I did not run for 2 full days since my foot injury in Dec-Feb.

However, things went a little different than planned and the long run crushed me...

WU miles went well and then I started the first 2 miles at HMP. I was pushing pretty hard and missed my target pace by 5 sec per mile. I figured the legs just needed a little longer to warm up after not running for close to 72 hours. I recovered at EP, noticed I was sweating buckets so got some water in and then started the second 2 miles at HMP. I got the first mile done at MP (missing my HMP be about 15 sec) and then suffered to not even be able to hold MP for the second one. The rest of the run continued to get worse from there and I was not happy when I got home.

Then I noticed the dew point was 71, temp 75, making it over 90% humidity, and sure enough the current weather conditions said very humid. I still think I should have been able to hold it together better but I'm not going to get worked up over it and I'll just move on.

On the positive side, I made it the full 1:40, never went slower than my EP and only lost 4 pounds which is much better that the last few week. I still need to get more water in, but I'm making progress.
