  • Marianne- 6 Flags on a hot summer day is NOT my idea of vacation! More power to ya!

OK- Swim RR # 1 is in the books. 1:28 which is pretty much what I expected. Desperately hoping for a wetsuit swim at Moo! I swam in a 25 meter pool, so that's 77 laps which I broke down in my head as 7x10 plus 7 to help keep count (I had my swimovate watch too- but didn't want to stop at the wall to look at it). When I got to the 5th set of 10 I realized I could "count" the last 2 sets plus 7 by using the alphabet instead.

So each lap became a letter and I used that letter to think of people in my life, here in EN, family, etc. Around "I" all I wanted to do was take my damn goggles off cause the pressure from them was really bothering me. I even thought of getting out of the pool "this is far enough isn't it? I wont be in the water this long on race day, right?" But darn it if most of you have freakin names with letters towards the END of the alphabet and I couldn't get out of the pool until I hit Michele, Linda, Marianne, Rich, Patrick, Tracy, Sheryl, etc.

Around "P" all I could think about is how much I wanted to P!! My bladder always fills when I swim- doesn't matter how empty it is before I go into the water. I know I WILL have to make a port-o-pottie stop in T1. Again, I debated with myself. "just get out of the pool and pee- you've gone far enough at this point" but I was sooooooo close and darn it- I was gonna finish the whole freakin 2.4 miles!

So it's done. I'm tired, starving, smell like chlorine, and will have goggle marks on my face until well after dinner tonight. But I've gotten the first RR milestone out of the way. WHEW!
  • Yo Nemo! That's a long way in the pool! I know so many swimmers who just do 2 miles every day as a matter of course. Can you even imagine? I think it's rough being in the pool for that long. Good on you for getting it done! Nice.

Met Leigh at 6:30 at Walden Pond--bless her for being and touch and making the drive. SOOOOO much better with company, even if you can't chat while swimming--just knowing she was out there made a big difference.  We decided to swim 1:30, which we did. Even though I wasn't in a pool I took a first look at my watch at 46', and thought "oh sh*&, I feel it's at least an hour." Soldiered on and finished--it felt loooong today, but physically I felt good. The sun glare was brutal, so siting was impossible in places. Water was really warm, and I was getting hot in my wetsuit. But it's D-U-N!

We decided 20' run was enough to loosen up after. We went together, and had a little time to chit chat. {{{Leigh}}} is a doll, and that's all I have to say. image

Getting a little nervous about tomorrow. Bite nails. image

  • Linda- I knew you guys were swimming together from the FB Post, so when I got to "L" I imagined I was in that lake with Linda and Leigh swimming side by side with you guys. It helped a ton even if it was for just 50 virtual meters!
  • Way to go Nemo, Linda and Leigh. I thought about you during my 3000 M swim this morning... mine was much easier though as I did half drills and half intervals so I got a number of breaks. I've only swam the full 3800M/4200Y straight twice in my life in the pool, but it looks like I may be doing it twice more this year. I'll think of you guys when I do it.
  • Matt, Nemo and All of Us--isn't it amazing how leaning on each other--even virtually--is so powerful and motivating. It really works, and is impossible to explain to others who don't experience it. All levels, all abilities, riding the good energy wave to get it done. Awesome stuff.

  • Good work Nemo, Linda and Leigh!!!  Good to have 2.4 RR in the bank!  1.23.56 for me.  I was thinking around 1.20...so not too far off.  My son Josh was swimming next to me this morning in a 25m pool...so he was my witness that I can actually swim 2.4 miles   Nemo, liked reading about your head games while swimming.  For me 20, 40, 60, 70 were the box.  So, when I reached 20 laps, in my head that was the victory lap, same for 40, 60, 70...then I would tell myself ok 21-40 box, time to work.  Then by 61-70 very small box and the last box was the best!!  Now, time to pack for trip to Madison and the RR bike tomorrow morning.  Hope to be on the course by 6 ish.  Everyone, you are an inspiration!!  Keep moving, keep getting it done!!

  • Woke up very nervous fo the RR swim this morning, but looking at everyone else's results I'm at least glad to be able to have done it in a 50 m pool, I only had to count to 38!!!  Pulled it off in 59.26, pretty happy, may have been off 100 m due to annoying lady who got in and tried to 'race' me when I passed her. She was just warming up and swam on me for 200 m before finally giving up, so annoying! We were the only two people in a 50 m lane, c'mon!!  Arms felt strong but not a lot of zip in the flips by the end. Helps to think you're racing the clock to lightening - thought for sure the pool would be closed for a storm so I was swimming for my life to get in all 3800 m!!

EXTREMELY nervous for RR ride/run tomorrow, not sure why so uptight about it. I'm following Jim's plan, thanks for all the prep work Jim! I like your plan and am hoping for the best after yesterday's 17-mile run and today's swim . Good luck everyone!! Please no rain!

  • Good job you guys!! I  have pushed RR  to next weekend AND  swam 4k last Friday, so will do a "piddly"  3400 today. Dead legs this morning on the run, but pushed through it.

WIll be thinking about everyone tomorrow and sending lots of Moo Jo for your RRs!!

  • Heather's post remindered me... many of you guys are likely not going to feel great for your RR tomorrow. Remember may of you are at the highest level of fatigue you have been at all l season and like Heather said just did a long run, followed by the longest swim of the year 24 hours later, and will be doing your longest ride/run in another 24 hours.

The point of the RR is not to feel awesome and set a new PR or to prove anything. It is to ride like you will on race day and test out your power and pace targets along with your plan. If you get through the run with no nutrition or other issues it is a successful day! Pay attention to all the details of how you feel throughout the day and look for opportunities to improve in the next RR.
  • SO jealous that I didn't get to swim at Walden with Linda and Leigh. Those that did pool swims- building that mental 6-pack and mental fu is strong!

I knew the temps and humidity would drop last night, so I decided that if the temp was below 60, I would skip the swim. I wasn't planning for a RR anyway. Get up and it is right at 60! Figures. But without humidity, it was COLD! So I went back to bed. Yep. 1st time I have done that this IM training session. I have been so tired and legs were sore as if they needed more stretching. I felt great when I actually got up, so went for a 30 minute run with hill repeats, did core work and push ups. Planning to hit the lake after work for drills only.

I am going to NY for my niece's Sweet 16 luau. Will get on the drainer at o'dark thirty to do some FTP work, but that's it. All of you doing the RR, please be safe. And be sure to post so I can learn and avoid problems.

As for tired legs- it has been building for me, and the tweaky ankle isn't helping. Not that I think a "rest" weekend will help my race, but it will help family relations.

RE: cranky- we had the discussion at dinner the other night that I am always trying to be aware of it, but don't say stupid things and I won't get mad (haha)

Thank you SOOOOOOOOOO Much for this reminder Matt!  I needed to hear it.

  • Definitely fun and a great motivator to meet up with LP for the swim this am.

My big goal for this swim was to actually sight. Novel idea I know but I usually just put my head down and go and after literally zigzagging my way through 2 laps of LP on Monday (which one would think we would be difficult with the WIRE to follow....), I was determined. Walden is pretty easy on that front. Easy to spot rocks in one cove, other cove across the way and then back to the beach (there's a house, but damned if I could see it in the sun until I was almost on top of it!).

First lap in 39:16 and second lap in 39:43. Pretty happy with the splits and even with the warm water, was totally fine in my LS wetsuit. Arm is coming along nicely as well so woohoo. Very confident it will be 100% by race day.

Huge props to the people doing these in pools!! you guys/gals rock.

  • WOW! The forum has been busy this week. I'm just getting cuaght up from a very hectic week.

Beth - Congrats on the medal. That is just awesome!

Linda - I'm feeling the same way maybe another 40 days on top of the remaining days image

Nemo - That picture is priceless!!

Matt - Thanks for the advice on the RR. I'm feeling completely drained this week.

I had a great run last night. I managed to get 16 mles in. My legs feel like dead weight today. Swam at luch and got the 2.4 in. I felt good about my swim. It was nice to know that distance is under my belt with a heavy week of training. I'm looking forward to the long ride tomorrow just to see what it brings.

Keep up the good work everyone!!
  • further re: CRANKY - seems worst on the long run days since I do them at the crack. By dinner I'm wiped (and judging from other people's notes, apparently dehydrated). I will admit however, that doing it the EN way, I'm not the same 'mean, crazy mommy' I was the last time I trained for an IM. My poor kids...

@Leigh - I'm with you on needing to work on fluids.

@Matt - you are very good at fluids  I took 18 oz with my on 17-miler and thought I was doing good....plus it's so convenient to never have to take a break during the day to go to the bathroom .

  • Good job on the swims today, team! Especially the folks in POOLS...Holy crap! I lose count after 300.

I did my swim today OWS in my wetsuit---first time in that wetsuit since Oct 2008. While I love how it just lifts my butt right out of the water, it was still quite warm with water temp at 79-80 degrees. After 20 minutes in it, I figured out how to swim normally. Did the 4000 yards in 1:10---that seems way fast for me. I think the course is shorter than that. I saw a crayfish while swimming and thought about Al's advice about not falling asleep on the the swim. Good thing Lake Monona's not very clear as I tend to treat these OWS as snorkeling aquatic life viewing trips while I should be focusing on my form.

Linda: You are so right about how awesome it is that we are all checking in and counting on each other with this training. So many, many times I would've cancelled a work-out then thougtht,"Well, Gina/Leigh/Linda/Matt/Jim/Bob/Kathy/Michele/Beth/Marianne/Eric (I know I'm missing more! Sorry!) got it done on tired legs...I can do it too!"

RR tomorrow for me too. I'm looking at it as a pacing exercise and a confirmation that my nutrition plan is solid. It's a completely solo expedition in everyway---no drafting, no riding pals as I should be locked in aero and paying attention to my watts...Kinda like that George Thorogood song,"I Train Alone" image
  • Very, veryyyyyy tired today... made it up to swim but just did shorter OW swim due to daylight vs work time. Doing my RR swim on Sunday, bike RR tomorrow. We have SUPER weather here today... low 80's and much lower humidity (where was this yesterday morning???) Hoping this holds for RR tomorrow. Will be on the road 6:30am and channeling you all to get me through the dulldrums of almost 6 hrs on bike. Doing the IMLOU course since right here, measured etc.

    @Gina.. what's the countdown now?

Kit- you made me smile afer reading that....thanks for keeping training fun   I love the peeps here....chill, but get er dun when need be....a great balance I think.  We must be the most balanced people on the planet

  • Swimmers -- you rock. I'm tabling the RR swim until I can get into open water. After last week's Oly swim, I'm feeling pretty good.

Hasan -- No Steelhead for me, but I had lots of fun doing it last year. Don't race too hard! And have fun!

Kitima -- Love it. My new goggles have less distortion and it is so much more fun to look around now.

Maps printed. Zones calculated. Garmin charged. Off to pick up Dash from the shop and then time for AtWI! I'll be thinking of you all in the morning.

  • Going north to NH to ride with the Boyles tomorrow. Well, not with b/c that's impossible. image But I am going to tag along on their route then run up there too. Just being out there "with" them--and a new route to boot--will be much better than circles on my own on roads I've ridden to brain numbing death. Psych!

  • Hey all you RR peeps!!! How did it go today????

  • I started a thread so everyone can report it when they are done (even you peeps who are waiting until next week). I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone did too!
  •  Out of bed at 5:30, on the bike at 6. For those that did the RR, I was doing next week's interval set and O-M-G is all I can say! I did manage to hit at least 95% on every interval. I did 2 of the 3 for 85% before deciding I had to get off the bike or I'd hit too much traffic on my way to NY. On the plus side, all of that interval work kept my mind off the fact that I was on the drainer. I rode for just over 2 hours!

Drive back tomorrow morning and probably put in another 2 hours on the drainer.

  • hmmmmm, I think I'd rather do another race rehearsal!
