Barrington Ride Sunday 8/15

NIL peeps: It is the weekend of triathlon training's arch-nemesis: The Air and Water Show. Soon, our running paths, our cycling routes, and our swimming beaches will be overrun with tourists. We must escape.

Anybody game for riding in Barrington on Sunday? Leaving Chicago on the first metra train out?

I also am thinking of heading up Sheridan on a yet-to-be-determined route on Saturday, probably starting in Wilmette around five-thirty or six, if anyone is interested in joining me for riding + recovery iced mocha.

  • I'll should be in barrington on Sunday like every other sunday. I'll watch the thread to see when you guys want to start and plan my route to run into you at some point.

Fair warning though, after a disappointing ABP last week I have full intentions of destroying myself. Anyone that wants to is welcome to join in on the fun!
  • Ha, I was just talking with a friend about the AWS hassle with my training.

I'd totally be down for at least Saturday, and the earlier the better as I'd like to go into work sometime that day too. I haven't ridden up Sheridan, and would love to figure out a route that I could ride to from the city.

Sunday I'm not sure about as I have some friends in town Saturday night, and will probably end up doing a trainer ride that night image
  • Jennifer, to get to on sheridan from the city, there are a couple of routes.
the one that is the most populated is the taking damen, I think XXX, element, and spider monkeys take that route EVERY weekend.
I know for a fact that spider monkeys have the cue sheet for their route on their website (http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=224358), and they're a pretty friendly group - so hit them up, I'm sure they wou;dn't mind you joining. I did it with them a couple of times.
I'd love to join you peeps this weekend, but doing DDD and coming back from wisconsin on Sunday.
but next weekend for the RR ;-)
  • @ Hasan- Do you find that route to be a good workout EN-style, or will it be hard to get the 270 min EN workout in? My problem is when I look at the city routes I just don't see how I can get a quality long ride in...
  • EN style, I think it's impossible honestly, before you hit evanston.
after evanston, the stops are not frequent, however, there's the 10 miles to and from the city which you can not ride consistently.
on the northshore, there are several rides, which i can recommend, and you CAN hit EN style.
one popular option is doing St Mary's - it has a fair amount of cycling traffic (but unfortunately, car traffic as well)m, and has a decent stretch of road.
IMHO, the best w/in the city's reach remains barrington
below are 2 options for st mary's (variations of the same thing) - you can spice it up by going further north on either

I would love to join you! Let me know what time you're planning on going and I can meet you. Anytime works for me. Tri or road bike? I can use either.
  • Saturday -- Jennifer, I rode up Clark Street once and it annoyed me, so I decided hopping on the train and starting in Wilmette is my new, favorite option.

@Hasan -- I love the St. Mary's/Old School Loop. Any thoughts on how to deal with the construction on Old Elm? Last week it was closed.

And, have fun riding the Dairyland Dare course!

Sunday -- I'm at the mercy of the Metra, so can be there at 11:30 at the earliest, unless Dash and I can hitch a ride with someone. Tri bike for me.

  •  @ Beth - not sure about the old elm portion. I will ax tomorrow, as i have some friends who train up there all the time.

@ beth and jennifer, try damen one more time, earlier in the morining (anytime before 8), it is a good 30 min WU. the return is usually what is brutal, bc you're travelling with a ton of other people. you might choose to disagree with me, but hey....

sooooo looking forward to killing my legs at DDD. just ready for insane brutality....

Awesome!  I was going to go to a Masters swim practice from 7 - 8:30 and then start after that so probably on my bike a little after 9.  I'll let you know when I know for sure.  Sticking with the tri-bike now that I am race prep mode.

Cool. That works for me. Just let me know.

What are IM ABP's, 3 hours?

  • @ Beth- At 5am I'd probably just hop on the lakefront path (I'm at the Museum Campus) and take it up and then hop on Ridge to Wilmette. Is there somewhere we can meet up? I've never ridden the St. Mary's loop.

Let's meet at the Linden/Sheridan corner of the B'hai Temple. -- or we could try Damen.

Don't take Ride all the way to Wilmette--it's just too narrow and cars go too fast.  You can head east once you pass Howard and take Chicago to Sheridan.  The pavement is a bit dodgy, but it's much safer.

  • Thanks Colleen, I'll avoid Ridge! Beth- what time do you want to meet at BT?

    5:45 a.m.?

  • And how about riding something like this? It incorpoates the St. Mary's loop, with another little 11-miler that we can add if we need more time. I also rode intervals on the bike path the parallels Sheridan from Ft. Sheridan to North Chicago last week. That actually worked out fairly well.

  • Beth, I've ridden Sheridan Rd. a zillion times, but I've never done the St. Mary's loop.  Is it the loop from mile 5.5 to mile 34 on the map your attached?  What's the route like?  I'm looking for new places to ride, and I like the idea of not having to drive to the suburbs.

    Thanks

Yes -- that's the big loop. I haven't done all of it. But I like to ride loops/variations of this route all the time. The bike path from Ft. Sheridan to North Chicago has almost no traffic. Very nice. And I'll often ride multiple loops of Old School/St. Marys.

  • Colleen, the loop is a pretty decent ride. It gets old after a while, just like everything else

if you girls want to spice it up, sometimes yo can hit the trail when you pass by it, for a couple of miles - that's how i typically do my intervals, on the trail, and then go back on the road for the volume work

Beth and Jen, still planning OWS @ 630 tonight at OSB?

Yes to OWS. I'll have on my EN visor.
