Only 1400 meters this morning with a fun total conditioning class thrown in....love days like these! Ok so over in the WI RR# 2 thread....David posted a forum discussing algae eating snakes in lake monona!!! OMG u guys have to read this convo....what is up with that...anyone hear of this? Ok now I am officially really scared to swim in lake monona help.
Leigh: Nice job on the test! I had a feeling you'd be able to run your half mary pacing---you were running quite strong at IMLP weekend. Bipolar PT, huh? Big watts hero one day, Poopy watts zero another?
Kathy: Algae eating snakes? Is there such a thing? I'm no herpetologist, but I do watch ALOT of Animal Planet...I thought all snakes were carnivores. Even the small ones eat insects. Anyhoo, I wouldn't worry about snakes in the water---not at Lake Monona. The Great Barrier Reef---maybe, the snakes there are poisonous and pretty big. I've been in the water with alot of scary critters: sharks, barracuda, sting rays, sea lions and dolphins. Okay the last two are not scary---but they can be quite big and fearless coming right up to you. Those critters are far, far more scared to people (especially 2300 of us splashing around) and will be nowhere in sight.
Swam for 1:20 this morning OWS---choppy, but not too bad. I saw a Bluegill about the size of my hand. It reminded me of how much I like fishing. Then I thought about when I raised tropical fish and wanted to become an ichthyologist in high school. STOP! I really must stay focused on the swim, think about my form (and not about fish and all their cool fishy-ness). For this reason I really should swim in a pool with a lap clock.

Total bipolar. What do you think? Rx Lithium? It's nutty. I always zero it out but lately it's been flashing negatives when I do so. Zero it and poof. 180 is max effort. which would be totally cool if it stayed there. next day- back up in the 220's.
It's funny about the vdot tests. I usually guessitmate my vdot by what my legs feel good running comfortably pace is. 30 seconds faster = MP + 30 seconds slower = LRP. These days 9:30-9:45 has been my default JRA so I figured LRP was 10:10-10:15. Not far off after formal testing. Maybe not as exact as watching the wattage buckets, but good enough in my book.
Ok I am calmer now. Matt Sullivan, Trevor and Heather all assured me no snakes in lake monona. Matt says it is all bu**sh*t on slowtwitch to scare gullible people like me yup...worked.
Hasan- I'd say take that vdot and run with it. Doesn't matter that you didn't get there with perfect pacing- you got there. That said, if you feel at all like it's just "too hot" a pace for you to use on race day- then don't worry about it and use your old Vdot for race day pace calculations. Try it out on the RR next week- that will help you know what to do.
Leigh- great job! I was thinking about you doing that vDot test while I was in the pool this morning. I can't wait to see you simply kill that course in Madison!
Heather- cool video- that swimming stuff in particular always puts butterflies in my tummy!
Kathy- stop reading that shit!!!
Is anyone else not exactly looking forward to the 4.5 hour ride tomorrow? I'm hoping it goes better than last week!!!
Yep! Slept in. I wanted that mental break from GO GO GO. No alarm, just woke up.
Then forced myself to walk out the door WITHOUT my swim gear so that I woud not try to sneak a swim after work. It is not physical fatigue. My TSS is only -3. This is totally mental.
Of course now those demons are LOUD. But I think of MooJo and her friends, and I know I'll be fine on race day. (I hope)
Snakes- Total B.S. And no way would a snake be interested in over 2000 large bodies flailing about. I have swam in lakes with poisonous snakes, but where the winters are brutally cold, they never get big. No worries no matter what!
@Heather - there's another one I love, with music from requiem for a dream. I get SOOOO fired up everytime I watch this ;-) thanks for the mooojo. )I even have it on my fb page, and my friend make fun of me for it!!!!. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PA0rAiNft2I
now off to rest for the remainder of the day, tomorrow, we RIDE - yay
ha ha ha aha laugh out loud giggle, what in the world and you have all those sons Kathy!! you know better than to get your leg pulled, algae eating snakes!!! I am hysterically laughing! besides won't they make you swim faster anyways??? ha ha ha .. oh my goodness let me settle down. algae eating snakes... oh my goodness. ... whew. besides if they eat algae then they dont' eat humans right?? Kathy
okay so I rode 60 this am. and was whooped but very hot here.. very. took me forever, no matter what kind of aero bottle I have Michele!!! cramming in workouts... rode 50 yesterday ran 3, day before rode 15/ran 6 swam 2400, etc etc.
nothing funny happened to me this morning. solo and didn't see anybody out on the roads either. I am gonna be excited on race day just to see other peeps within drafting distance of me!!! and running too. oh my goodness I think some of us are forgetting just how much speed/energy we will gain just by being around other people!! most of my rides, If I start, I get dropped, just sayin' and the people I can keep up with, well they aren't going long or doing an IM. so my husband has called me a "slow Ironman" note the juxtaposition.. so I am in a weird spot... not fast enough for my tng partners but too fast for the recreational rider. hmm. anyways... solo it was. and no problems.
ha ha ha aha laugh out loud giggle, what in the world and you have all those sons Kathy!! you know better than to get your leg pulled, algae eating snakes!!! M- what can I say a blonde day for sure Took the bait hook line and sinker....hate swimming with fish...but snakes just pushed me over the edge! Oh and I must ask David Williams to own a little of this because he posted the stuff and was freaking out also......ummm David u out there today ?......anyhow....glad I made you giggle
Did one of my recovery swims today--perfect. 1000 w/u; 50 EZ': 300 drill w/fins; 500 pull with paddles. Wonderful! And completely enough.
Nemo--"not looking forward to it" is the understatement of the day. I've been obsessing about the weekend rides all day. Nope, not super psyched. But I'll throw it down and get it done. I'm meeting MIchele in some configuration tomorrow, so that will help--A LOT. Better go start mixing potions and packing gelatinous things to eat.
Glad I'm not the only one not "up" for the ride tomorrow. I'm considering leaving from home or packing the car and heading to a local HIM course. Its a better ride once I get out of town, but packing the car and driving an hour... ugh, much more work. I guess posting here is a way to hold myself accountable. For now.. I better go beat my son in some Friday night Wii action! Have a good weekend and be safe out there!
I tried a new route today, not entirely new but I had only ridden it once before with friends. My plan for the day was to meet up with a regular group ride for the first 1-1.5 hours then head out and do my 'new' loop which has a good amount of climbing in it. Was kind of late out the door riding to the group ride rally point so really had to pick up the pace at the start, hung the corner and was going to make it just in time-- except the road was closed due to construction. I could see some people about 2 blocks away where we ere supposed to meet, but nothing but heavy machinery and an upturned road between us. Tried to yell, then tried to find a new route, but alas they were gone.
Headed out on my own and nearly killed myself to hit all of the FTP intervals but gladly smoked the first two and hung on for the 3rd. The 5x15 were not nearly as pleasant as I would have liked after the FTP intervals (cursing RnP crossed my mind). I recently bumped my FTP and am now paying the price trying to stick to the new zones. Eventually settled in for the rest of the pretty long, somewhat lonely and somewhat boring solo ride but blew my timing, I ended up back to the house at about 4hrs, 30 minutes short. I started doing laps around the neighborhood just because it seems like a psychological defeat to not have ridden the prescribed length, plus my legs still felt halfway decent. Alas after a few laps and crazy looks from my neighbors I decided it was kind stupid/stubborn to tear around a residential neighborhood blowing stop signs for the sake of pride and called it.
Total ride: 4:10, 81 miles, 2400 ft/climb averaged out to 0.8 IF and 264 TSS.
officially cooked! going away for 3 days, so crammed in workouts and got er done, although not the intensity or intervals as prescribed as there was no rest!!, anyways... today? ran 14/walked 2 today and swam 1800, ran 7.5 last night, and rode 60 yesterday morning and etc.. the days preceding. very hot here.. like gonna be 103 today and last night I ran when it was 100 maybe down to 97 and I started about 6 p.m. so not sure if the fatigue or the heat or maybe me, but surely with cooler temps, I might be faster as when it get over 11 a.m. on a ride, all intensity for me anyways goes down to zone 2 and then it is zone 1 just finish and get back to car. for a run, gotta be done by 8 a.m. ... anyways... the double run? yes why. well I have 3 days off so got permission from Coach P in chat room to bump up my long run, with my slower pacing, I have only been at 15 miles and mentally needed or wanted a bit more....so I did two runs 12 hours apart. plus like I said gonna be gone.. so now I can R & R. so I didn't do the 5k test due to any intense fast stuff seems to hurt my left quad?? anyways... in a sick sick way I like the 2x days! seen sunrise and sunset twice this week. and now I can relax mentally as an IM athlete can.!! ha to take son to college, hotel room downtown nashville so I doubt any serious tng but time with DH and going to parent orientation classes!! not sure what I am in for... but as Moms know back to school stuff going on for me as all 5 kids go back. my oldest son? senior at college but unable to pass a calculus prereq so unable to move forward, you can imagine the stress... so been praying about this.. so today at mile 14, I was super tired... and I came across this runner dude, bonking I could tell at the water fountain. I quiz him, I am sweating and drenched and neededwater... along the Rivertrail, and he admits to me that he has been dizzy a few times, doing 19 miles, started at 5:15 and it was like 4.5 hour later, had only 2 GUs, and some water and nothing else, can't tell the time of his run so no simple math, so I immed say I will stay with him, and I immed flag down a cyclist, a regular along the trail although I dont know him. I ask him for some cals and he give me a GU which I advise runner dude to take in gradually so he wont' throw up. We walk together for 2 miles and when I ask him what he does? he works for local univ in Registrar! the same univ that son was gonna check out on Monday to see if they offered class to transfer back up! okay so I am drenched with sweat, 91 out and I get goosebumps.. as I just told him that God had ordained us meeting.... he said "sure he would help me out!" and I got his name too.... I know it, I was overcome with emotion, yes a bit short on cals myself... but I couldn't believe it, a stranger that I had helped out. was gonna help out my son and God had once again taken some of my worries and helped me. normally I don't share such.. but this is what happened to me on my run today... m
Nice job Trevor! I pulled into the parking lot at 4:20 and made the decision not to do an extra out-and-back to get in 10 more min- seemed close enough! Besides, unlike you, my legs were TOAST!!!
That said- the ride was much better than last week. The last hour was still a struggle, but it was MUCH better than last week. I'll take it. I kept thinking "Oh thank goodness next week is ONLY a 6 hour race rehearsal!" HA HA HA!!!
So, last night the power went out around 830 and stayed out until around midnight. Needless to say, it got pretty stuffy in the house = me not sleeping. When it came back on (thankfully) I had to get up and turn everything off. Then restless all night.
Finally up about 6:50 and AOB by 8. It was another humid, thick ,sultry morning. Hit all the FTP work on a favorite climb, then for the 5*12s @ ;80-85%!! Whew buddy, was holding strong with IF of .81-.82 until the last hour and started sagging. The last hour was mental si* pack work for sure!! Called it a day @ 4:10.
Going out for pi**a and some beer, then to see "Eat. Pray, Love."
Well, I just downloaded my data and am a little disappointed. I thought I held the intervals fairly well and rode IF .8 for the rest. But alas it seems I came up short. My legs feel like I did the work- but it's not showing in the results :-( Well, at leaste I didn't bonk this time!
yes on tired legs! don't beat yourself up. heat and fatigue = lower stuff allt he way around. I ran into our local farmers market, I mean like sweaty, ran in literally and had some money but got given a free peach by vendor. very good and it saved me.. I ran out with peach juice down my chin a highlight of the run! yuck on no A/C Gina! yep we need it down here. a major emergency without it. sorry for your lack of sleep.
Love this thread...it is keeping me going. I have a confession, I totally called in sick to work today to get my ride in. In retrospect I should have had a better dinner last night. I had the you pick two from Panera Bread with soup, salad and bread. Not enough calories with the amount of volume we are doing. I did two 41 mile loops. Starting the second loop my stomach was growling...big time. I had only Infinit with me. My legs were super heavy and I was beyond hungry. This is crazy, this never happens to me on the bike. I started making deals with myself to keep going. At the 20 mile mark on the second loop I stopped at the Dickerson Store and bought a Snickers bar...a little piece of Heaven. Totally saved my ride. From there on I put on my big girl pants and worked my ass off to burn off that Snickers. Hey whatever gets me through the workout. Keep up the good work everyone.
@ ;Neems--the fatigue is huge. It will all come together, it really will!
@Trevor--I did the out-and-back dealio today on a road 20' from home to make sure I got home at 4:30.. I miscalculated and looped back early from points further west. The 8' I rode to fill the time were HORRIBLE. Worst of the ride. It took about a week for those minuites to tick by. Not sure that was worth it.
@G--want your take on the movie. Nice work out there. That last hour--heat, baby. Heat did you in.
I had the best ride of the season today. For me, it was off the charts. .82 IF including w/u and c/d. Hit the intervals at .99; .99 and .97. All work at .85. Tried to stay even with the pedaling and keep my foot a bit on the gas for the whole workout. I was happy with how it turned out. With my health back in order, and Keith doing well, I am really feeling a lot better. There were a lot of pieces missing in my training, but I'm so lucky to even be at this point. Heck, I might even peak at just the right time!
Nice, HARD work everyone.
PS--My legs feels AWFUL. Yes I rode hard today, but hope I didn't toast tomorrow. Each quad feels like it weighs 100lbs, and feels all "spongy" and weird. Lordy, it will be interesting.
I've lost 4 lbs due to the stomach virus I've been dealing with which is nice, but it has left me a little weak. Got 90 miles in today in 4:35:00. Last hour was pretty tough, totally zapped, dry heaving and spitting up on these long rides does not make it any easier.
Did the 1st 8 min interval but could not do the others due to the nausea. Made it an ABP ride.
Finished workout with a 15 min brick, and was thrilled to lie in the ice bath for a while, throw on the compression pants and then just relax for the rest of the day. Able to eat more now and feeling better, so I'm hoping tomorrows ride will be a more enjoyable one.
Finally able to get on computer due to electricity off most of the day. So, I decided to try something different this morning to increase mojo or just make this loooong ride seem interesting. I did 2 hours of intervals on the trainer. Most of my long rides have been minus the intervals simply because I just don't have a good place outside to do them. After intervals headed outside...but instead of riding on my usual route on roads, I headed for some local trails and had a great ride!! I normally avoid trails because of tooo many slow riders and runners...but today was ok. Beautiful day to be outside. I managed 75 miles in roughly 4 hr 50 minutes. Doing a sprint tomorrow...really looking forward to racing fast and having fun!!
LP-good work today....u really know how to make those intervals come together on the road!

Total bipolar. What do you think? Rx Lithium?
It's nutty. I always zero it out but lately it's been flashing negatives when I do so. Zero it and poof. 180 is max effort. which would be totally cool if it stayed there. next day- back up in the 220's.

One of my current favorite songs!! I listed it over in Marianne's long run thread!!
Holy cow! My heart rate when up just watching the mass swim start. Very awesome video though!

Baby OWS with Hasan and Jennifer on Thursday night. Totally feeling off, but, hey, I packed lots of boxes.
No vdot for me, but I just did a very, very lengthy stair and weights workout. I am hoping my legs work tomorrow. Soon to be AIIB (in ice bath).
Good job vdot testers!
