  • Michele- Do they have the Farmer's Market on race weekend?

  • Thanks for sending! It's very impressive
  • Gina- they had the Farmers Market on race weekend in 08. Joe and I walked around that morning (probably too much, I know, whatever) but it was soooo relaxing and such a pretty day. Really helped take my mind off everything for a little while.
  • Awesome Dave thank you!

  • Hi David,

I would love to get a copy ( wem3@mac.com ) Thanks very much for putting it together.

I remember that Hayes and Karin posted a really good Spectator's guide that they did for their family and friends right after last year's IMWI too. Definitely worth digging up..

I came up and introduced myself briefly last year while you were officiating that corner on State Street. Very best of luck in the race this year!!!

Yep, this guide is based in large part on theirs.  I used theirs as a starting point and added to it.  They deserve most of the credit.

David - thanks for sending this...what a phenomenal resource!

Another thing I would add, for anyone interested, is that there's another great spot for spectators on the run, where athletes can be seen 6 times. At the north end of Walnut St, where it intersects with the bike trail, the course forms a triangle. Bottom of triangle is the portion of the bike path where athletes turn off Walnut to head east (toward the State Street turn-around). Then on the way back, athletes run along the top/right section of the triangle along the bike path, before they head to the far west bike path turn-around. Then <2 miles later, the athletes run along the left section of the triangle right before they get back onto walnut. It's not really represented well on the official course map, but if spectators hang out in that triangle area, it's a great place to watch. Plenty of shade, an aid station, and it's nice for athletes to see a familiar face in a section of the course that's not jammed with other spectators. And that out/back on the bike path can be pretty dismal and lonely. <img border="0" align="absmiddle" src="http://members.endurancenation.us/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif" alt="" />

To get there, you can take Campus Drive, then north at the Highland Ave exit (by the UW and VA hospitals), then right on Marsh Lane. There's a huge parking lot (UW Lot 60) on the left, which overlooks the run course along the out/back section of the bike path. That actually worked really well when my mom brought my grandfather (who's in a wheelchair) to spectate, because they could actually see me from the parking lot. The triangle that I decribed above is just to the east of the parking lot.

WORKING ON MAPS FOR FAMILY, DO CAMPUS AND UNIVERSITY BECOME ONE? DOES THIS ROUTE CROSS RACE ROUTE ;ANY POINT?

The only drawback is that there's no convenient places to get food/drinks nearby.

One additional comment about spectating from Gray's in Verona...I would take the 2nd Verona exit from Hwy 18/151, and turn right on old Hwy PB at the stoplight at the bottom of the exit. The bike course comes across PB just up the road, so spectators can park on the side of PB and walk to Gray's. We've talked about reserving the Gray's balcony on race day for EN spectators, depending on how many people want to hang out there. And the Team dinner on Thurs night will be at Gray's this year. Not sure exactly what time yet.

Again, nice work on this document! Great details, and super helpful for spectators!

Yes, University Ave splits for a while, creating a section where there's both University Ave and Campus Drive.  No, there's no conflict with the run course because Campus Dr is an overpass that goes over the course at Walnut St.  The run course is on University Ave only from Breese Terrace to Walnut Street, which is the section where Campus Drive runs parallel to it.  So if you take University Ave west from downtown, you can stay to the right at the split onto Campus Drive, and then take the Highland Ave exit.  This will work if you've parked NORTH (or east/southeast) of the capitol (and can hop on Gorham to get to University Ave).  And since I'm really good at giving TOO MUCH information...

If, instead, you've parked south or southwest of the capitol, then the easiest way to the west end of the run course is to take Nolen (this works fine even if athletes are still on bike course, because there are still traffic lanes open on Nolen) to right at North Shore (which becomes Proudfit, then becomes Regent).  Heading west on Regent you'll end up alongside the run course briefly as you pass Camp Randall stadium, but take Regent all the way to Highland Ave and turn right/north (it's a weird intersection right before a big cemetery).

Happy to help with a practice "drive-through" on Fri or Sat if your fans need help with this.  image

  • Michele- How hard is it to get into Monty's ; 7pm on a Fri? Trying to plan dinner for family on the 10th. Just don't want to have to hassle or wait forever for a table.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

As long as it's no more than 4-5 people, then probably 20-30 min or less.  That's my best guess.  Definitely a bit of a gamble, for places like that which don't do reservations.  But since there aren't any hotels in that area of town, you probably have a good chance of it not being extra crowded due to IMWI weekend.  Just the regular crowded.  image

  • David- can you send me a copy too? jennifer.burbatt@gmail.com

And I would totally recommend renting a row boat from the Union and puttering along the lake if your guests like that kind of thing. Did it last year after signup and it was just nice and relaxing.
