IMWI Families and volunteering

In 2008 Joe volunteered at an aid station around the mile 4ish (on Walnut Street, under the underpass).  It was great because I got to see him 4 times on the run, knew exactly where he would be,  it was easier for him to spot me (cause he had a front row seat and other volunteers looking for me),  and he had enough time to make it to the finish line after completing his shift and seeing me one last time at that aid station.  Plus- it gave him something to do (IM watching all day can be pretty boring), he felt like he was part of the action,  and he got a nice T-Shirt (which he wears more than I wear my IM Finisher shirt!)

I know we've got lots of action going on with the EN Crew at Mile 18.  But he's gonna volunteer again which will give me yet another great "support crew" section on the course to look forward to.

Is anyone else having their family members volunteer on race day?  Joe still needs to sign up, and if we have enough folks doing it, it would be nice to have all the EN Family members volunteering at the same aid station to keep each other company.

  • My mom is volunteering at the aid station in the UW 60 lot from 3:30-7:30, so from what it looks like she can see me up to 6 times on the course. Last year I volunteered at the Walnut street one and liked that location as well. Unfortunately there were no slots left in the late afternoon at Walnut, and she really wanted to have enough time to get to the finish. I told her that she has to cheer specially for anyone with EN gear on image
  • Thanks Jennifer- that's good to know since Joe would probably want about the same time slot. I may send him over to UW 60 Lot if he can't get the spot he wants. I'm sure he'd appreciate another EN SHerpa to hang with :-)
  • My sister, Jo Cobble and her newbie triathlete friend, Marilyn, will be in the women's T1 changing area. They have instructions to man the seats all the way at the end, to help the EN chicas get out as speedily as possible.
  • While I'm not "family", I'll be at run special needs from 2 - 6 and then run over to mile 18 to meet up with the rest.
  • If volunteering falls through, PnI will be out on the bike course. Dunno if we'll ride the course backwards or drive out to one of the hills with the new EN flag. Last year we were on Midtown, I think. Joe is welcome to hang with us.

I'm done with my shift at 9:30 and plan to go out to Midtown again.

  • I'll be at bike check out from 8-10p.  I suspect I'll be at the tent at mile 18 prior to then... and following that who knows. perhaps in the grand stand watching the final finishers and being awestruck and inspired!

  • Theresa and Abigail will be at midtown again during the bike and at mile 18 on the run.

I'm riding the course backwards but will be stopping at midtown as well.
  • I'm volunteering at athlete check-in on Thursday (so you should all check in on Thurs afternoon when I'm there!) so I can be out there all day on sunday to cheer!

    Swim: top of helix
Bike: probably hill right before Mt Horeb, on hwy 92...and/or midtown
Run: the "triangle" at Walnut and the bike trail...then Mile 18....then finish line
  • oooh- specific time Michele? My plan is to register Thurs afternoon (was thinking 12:30-1:30ish while others will be eating). I'd love to check in when you are there.
  • I'll be there from 1-5pm!
  • Changing my schedule accordingly :-)
  • OK, my plans are as follows.

    FRIDAY:
-5:00pm Arrive in Madison at Michele's house
    -get/receive mo-hawk haircut

    SATURDAY:
-8:00am volunteer meeting@Monona Terrace for bike handling training.
    -EN bike ride
-EN non-racer dinner/hang some where in Madison (do we have an official location for this?)

    SUNDAY:
-Park car at lot 32 close to mile 18 with DJ gear
-Volunteer at T1 as a bike handler.
    -Mt Orab/Midtown
    -Mile 18
    -Greatdane
-Finish line watching the last finishers

    MONDAY:
    -Sign up for IMWI 2012
    -Drive home

I don't know a thing about Madison or where things are. The only perspective I have of Madison is as a racer, not a spectator. I would love to tag a long with some EN peps that know where to go/how to get there. Is it safe to assume that the best way around will be biking?

Also, I will be parking my car close to mile 18 with DJ gear for MILE 18. If anyone needs to use my car as storage, let me know.

We should start a online roster with phone numbers so we all can connect. (I know we did this last year)

    I'll be there from 1-5pm!

Perfect!! Arriving in Mad town @ 10:30, lunch (suggestions?), registration

  • I've updated the Race Weekend Spreadsheet to capture the non-racers we'll have up there as well. Please fill out your stuff!!

  • For Satruday Night Non-Racer Dinner, Michele had a few good suggestions that are outside of downtown, but we never picked one.  I would like to eat somewhere different but if RnP are going to the Great Dane for drinks, for simplicity maybe it just makes sense to either go there or somewhere else on State St / Capital Square for dinner.

If I  am looking ;  the map correctly, the "triangle" & mile 18 are pretty close together???

Nevermind, I  was looking ; an old map on "Map My Run"

  • @Gina, the triangle is just under a 1/2 mile from mi 18. Mile 18 is about halfway btwn the triangle and the turn onto Observatory. there are several versions of the course on map my run that are incorrect...even the versions that say they are the 2009 course.

Ok, how about the Brass Ring?  It's walking distance (just over a half mile) to the Great Dane, to hang out with RnP after dinner.  They have a great outdoor patio, casual atmosphere, and decent food/prices.

The other convenient option I mentioned in a different thread was: Ian's pizza  on State Street is cool because you can get pizza by the slice and they have lots of different varieties, along with salads.  Super informal, and outdoor seating.  Also within 1/2 mile from Great Dane.

In addition to the Ironman stuff that weekend, there's a home Badgers game on Saturday at 11am.  Union Terrace would be a fun place to hang out, but for a group looking for dinner plans I'm thinking that would be a bit inconvenient.

  • Marigold for me, too!

I'm fine with whatever you think will work well Michele!  Brass Ring is good with me if it is ok with others as well.

  • I have yet to read the athlete info guide, is there anything in there about the Verona Shuttle for families?

    Yup- its in there

  • What Matt said. I'm good with The Brass Ring if others agree.

    Thanks Michelle!

  • You can count Annette & I in for the brass ring

  • I'll tag along where ever.
  • If food and beer are served, I will be in attendance.
  • PnI didn't think about dinner plans for Saturday so we're in for whatever the group decides. Same for Friday also. We are actually doing well with keeping up with work behind the scenes = we likely won't have _that_ much work to do in WI = we'll be able to ride more and be more social and stuff. In the past we've had to work our asses off at IMWI, writing plans together, etc.
