Right there with ya Linda! I had a great ride today showing fellow ENer Keith around my town- but I had to keep myself in check several times when I'd get the urge to take a huge pull. Duh! Anyway, finished up the ride and REALLY felt a hugh "Ahhhhhhh" moment. The taper really and truly has begun!!!
I'm gonna be in major "get the details finalized" mode over the next 2-3 days. Earle and potentially Fiona could throw a monkey wrench in my pre-race schedule! I kinda gotta be ready to pack and roll as early as Wednesday- just in case.
Like Linda and Nemo- Just felt awesome out there today. This must be what it is like for the rest of the world to ride their bike. Sheer joy! You can go fast and you don't want to cry every minute of the workout! Now I can really see just how fatigued I was all of those weekends of 7.5+ hrs riding! 25 minute run and done. Heat is coming on quick in NE (not that I am complaining- I love it.)
ha ha, okay I think we are beginning to feel the effects of the taper, in that energy and faster pacing has returned to us!! so two more weeks. and like you I am down for "resting" now. I don't feel so heavy legged or so exhausted that I can't walk up and down my stairs. and my weight has slipped back down after a 6lb hike in 5 days!! but thanks to Kit, she talked me off the ledge and said it was water retention! anyways.... girls look in women's thread, putting a vid there. I rode on Friday solo and worked on VI, and focused very intently. and then yesterday DH was riding, hasn't ridden in over a month, so I hopped on board with him and his two buds so VI was out of the ?, since they surged, let off, surged, let off, but 42 miles is 42 miles so I took it with joy! hilly route so all good. did brick runs of 30' after each ride and then today "made up" the long run, that due to scheduling, I didn't quite nail on Thursday. so today did the 1.5 hour long run.. and like y'all felt a pacing that I hadn't seen in a long while!!! I had girlfriends to run with, cooler but still humid weather but still...so then I just had a good stretch and egg omelette and last week after the RR wasn't quite feeling it, but today, think, okay yeah, this is gonna work. m
Great job peeps on the rides and runs this weekend. I agree with the abounding sentiments that the rides were awesome this weekend!!! They both went by quickly (well it seemed that way)...I actually ended up doing almost 4 on Sat due to a new route and just really having a good time out there Like Michele said, imagine having a good time on the bike...and really enjoying it!!! Today just did 2, skipped the run today. Did get it done yesterday though and yeah Nemo, love running off the bike.. I am enjoying following all the ENers racing IMs today....kind of makes me a tinsy bit emotional Ok so MN state fair is on in the cities....prolly go grab some gut splitting food and walk my feet off, but I figure better this week then next.
Two good rides in the books this weekend -- I was lucky enough to have company for both of them. Jennifer, Jeff, and I rode on Saturday and I rode with another friend on Sunday. Rides, of course, ended up being longer than planned. But hey, it felt good.
Saturday's ride? All the flats.
Sunday's ride. No flats, but loose rear brake. Dash is so ready to go to the shop this week!

LOL!!! True that!!! I name that the quote of the week.
Awesome to hear that everyone is feeling good and ready to truly rest!! Nicely done!
Had to give myself the be smart pep talk this week. Just totally run down and body in revolt mode. can't think of any other way to describe it. Workouts have been so-so. Top end speed is there but ability to hold it is minimal. Sore and tired in weird ways (i.e. walking around and arms burning after 20' in the aerobars = huh?? they were in them for 6 hours last weekend). No idea what it is but it's the second year in a row that I've hit it. Feel puffy and all out of whack on a fluid basis. Weird girl stuff pops up. It's just...weird. so anyhow, decided to stand down a little and get things balanced back out again. get the work in (or at least try) and go home. a 2 versus 3 hour ride or 45' vs 60' run isn't going to destroy months of training.
Leigh- everyone responds differently. If this is how you were last year, then I would bet this is just your body's rhythm. You are so ready and yes- shortening the workout is not going to affect race day outcomes. The hay is in the barn!! But I am sorry to here that you feel out of sorts. Hope you are feeling spry in no time! But we are going to have a blast in Madison!!
Leigh, I'm with you. I've got my top end speed but it's fleeting for sure. I'm pooped and constantly starving. The massage and ART I had this week has left me really, really sore. You are absolutely correct about standing down. There is nothing we can gain now...The best we can do is not get hurt and rest up.
Despite being pooped, I do have this near irresistable urge to go for a mountain bike ride---probably the most STOOPID thing I could do right now. Anyhoo, it won't happen because my DH borrowed my rear wheel (after snapping the spoke and eyelet from his rear wheel) for a rainy/muddy race. Well, after that race the free hub is completely gummed up and has to be replaced. So there! A well timed mechanical problem.
This message is mostly for Nemo, cos she posed the question earlier, but it might be helpful to other people as well. It's an update regarding the Garmin 310xt:
started off the website, an they said the battery life lasts about 20 hrs. they said the 305 last about 10 (my expeirence was closer to 7), so I was skeptical of their 20 hrs......
Experiment: started using the Garmin 310 xt, continuously from a FULL charge, to see how long mine would last. Until it hit battery low, it was about 15 hrs, of continuous activity and recording, without a recharge, over the course of 5 days (includes commuting to work). Also, from previous attempts, the batery does run out, if the garmin is left off over the course of a couple of week. After the battery gave me battery low, at 15 hrs,it ran for another 80 mins (and then I recharged at which point it indicated 1% battery in there!!!!!
disclaimers: I use a lot of alerts, ANY and every form of alerts - you name it, I'm probably using it. My friends say "it's like riding with R2D2" and this is no joke.... however, I am using only noise alert, and not vibration, and that uses more battery power. Also, I have been using the garmin since Oct '09, so people with older units might have less battery life - newer units more battery life ?!?!)
further notes to the IMWI racers: Taking off a FULL body wetsuit )not sleeveless is not easy, my wetsuit was stuck on the garmin at Door county (even with a wetsuit stripper; yep they had wetsuit strippers at door county half-iron;-)). from previous halves that i have done with the 310. I have turned it on, and started the automultisport function exactly one hour prior to my designated start time. havig it lock on the satellites is less stressful than starting it, and then waiting for it. I lso have it in T1, , so that i just press the lap button as I'm leaving transition, and it automatically goes to bike mode. I have found this to work better for me in 2 1/2 IMs than having the garmin with me on my swim. just my own personal expeience.
That's very helpful Hasan! I'm gonna update that other thread with your findings. Real quick question, when you ran it for the 15 hours (with all the alerts and such) were you using the GPS?
yes, this was 15 hrs of GPS recording mostly. the only times it was running without GPS recording was when I am locating satellites, and uploading the info to my computer. and then analyzing the misery!!!!!
I'm another member of the " I felt to good this weekend and pushed it harder than I should" . Time for more discipline while out there on the roads as well as in the kitchen, still hungry as a horse.
Worked to hard to get the weight down to mess it up now.
Really want to go into this race rested. Trying to find that fine line between staying fresh and not overdoing it. At 47 yrs old I know my body needs some more recovery than I think this taper has me doing. Working hard has never been a problem for me, standing down and resting always has.
It was helpful hearing in the recent posts that many of you feel the same way and will be resting more, please keep repeating that mantra, I need to keep hearing it !!!!
Spent hours in front of the computer yesterday watching Louisville, loved watching it.
