There's No Crying in Ironman (at least not this week): The IMWI Pep Rally Thread

Alrighty, folks. The muscles, they are sore. The tempers, they are ready to snap. The race rehearsal? This is the week where we separate Ironman dreams from Ironman reality. (good thing, really).

What do we need to get it all done without crying on the side of the road by our bicycles?

Mojo.

Lots of mojo.

Post any mojo-boosting thoughts, pics, stories, songs, etc. here this week.

1. Cool thing racing truth learned this year?

Teenage boy volunteer giggle and blush when you put ice down your sports bra in front of them.

2. Life-sized cut out of Officer Ford in his pink speedo, standing my Mike Reilly at the end of the race, holding apple crisp (with matching pink oven mitts, natch. Pink speedos, of course, follow all things pro.) . Can we make this so?

3. Your ipod needs thIs song, because you probably don't have enough Kei$ha on your long run mix.

  •  LOVE This thread Beth!!!  Great idea!!

This song does it for me- totally pumps me up when I think about it- seriously gives me chills.  I just wish they would come out with it as a single so I could buy the MP3 for my iPod!

  • Nemo- I love that song. You CAN convert a you tube video to MP3. I did it with that song. Just google it, is fairly easy to do!!

  • When I need to seriously put things into perspective, no doubt it's time for Ali in the Jungle

  • +1 for Ali in the jungle...and props to Nike for making a commercial out of it this year...I don't have the tech skills to add a fancy video but I'll throw eminem Lose Yourself into the motivation mix. if you had one shot, one opportunity, one moment would you capture it or just let it go....

  •  Look slike we each turn to some video/song to put things into perspective. I turn to this, and just admire the guy.

I happened to have this move from Netflix. Great race inspiration (and the best image of "the wall/the line" ever.) Worth adding!

  • Love this thread- keep em coming folks!

Hasan- that video always inspires me.
  • Love him or despise him, Eminem's music always seems to come up with Ironman. i really like parts of his latest song, Not Afraid".

I’m not afraid to take a stand

    Everybody come take my hand

We’ll walk this road together, through the storm

    Whatever weather, cold or warm

Just let you know that, you’re not alone

Hola if you feel that you’ve been down the same road

  • This one's for the chicas....Are you with me?????  Hey I need me some pink fingernails. :

    Photobucket

  •  Ya got that right Linda!  I'm with ya!  And so is Moo Jo

  • Well today, my "No Crying" moment came in the form of Christina Aguilera.  I was finishing up the last 2:30 run, heading for home, and I began to think "AMEN, this calf isn't gonna hold me back, take THAT you stupid calf!"  Just then "FIGHTER" came up on the iPod and the lyrics both echoed my "F YOU, YOU STUPID CALF" feeling as well as made me appreciate how having this injury has actually made me stronger in the end.

    Here's the basic lyrics:

After all you put me through

    You'd think I'd despise you

But in the end I wanna thank you

'Cause you made that much stronger

    ...............

After all of the fights and the lies

Guess you're wanting to hurt me

    But that won't work anymore

No more, uh uh, it's over

'Cause if it wasn't for all of your torture

I wouldn't know how to be this way now

    And never back down

So I wanna say thank you

    'Cause it

    Makes me that much stronger

Makes me work a little bit harder

    Makes me that much wiser

So thanks for making me a fighter

Made me learn a little bit faster

Made my skin a little bit thicker

    Makes me that much smarter

So thanks for making me a fighter

  • OK, this is now getting weird--but good weird. Fighter is the song I think of ALL the time on my way to Walden--I cannot explain why. I have associations with certain songs at certain locations, and the Walden-Fighter connection is one of them. So I was thinking Fighter in my head on myway to Walden this morning, it came on the radio, and then on Nemo's iPod......whoooooooo.....

  • Insert Twighlight Zone music here!

Man.. the twilight zone lives on... we were just talking about this scene in this movie on the long run this morning!  I too have Fighter on the Ipod.  It was one of my long run mojo songs for last year!  And Linda- I'll post a photo complete with pink nails for you later (since I happened to get a wonderful surprise in the mail yesterday... just what I needed the night before 2.5 hrs run!!)

  •  More MOJO!!!  OK folks, I'm really really happy about something I just discovered and I just have to share it with you.  I hope this lifts your spirits a little too.  You guys more than anyone else will appreciate why this is making me feel sooooooo much better about myself going into this race.

So I finally downloaded and looked at my run data from this morning.  Sure enough, just like I thought, I neg split the run and just got stronger the farther I went.  Here's a summary of avg pace for splits by 30 min intervals:

    10:41

    10:13

    9:57

    9:28

    9:29

With the total run having an Avg Pace of 9:55

So out of curiosity I decided to look at the last 2:30 run I did in 2008 before IMWI.  Now I was doing the intervals on that run so you can't really compare the splits, but ya wanna know what my Average Pace was?   9:11!!!!  OK, it's slower than 9:55.  But it's not nearly as big a difference as I anticipated it would be and it was a "fast" long run because I did Threshold intervals.

So there's hope.  If I execute well, I can still have a reasonable day (not a PR day- but not a horrible day either).

  • Kris, that is awesome!

    Nemo -- nicely done, lady.

No crying thought of the day. Three weeks from right now? We can all be at Lazy Jane's, eating delicious scones to turn them into glycogen to help us race.

  •  Beth- I'm planning on hitting up Lazy Jane's for my big lunch (brunch) the day before the race.  Have been dreaming about those eggs and scones!  Yummmmmmm!

Today's Mojo is brought to you by the letter "T"  as in T-shirt.  I got my EN Chica's Rule T in the mail today!  Had to try it on (just to be sure it fit of course ).  The next time I wear it will be after I cross the finish line at IMOO!!!  Can't WAIT!!!  What a perfect little pick me up before the RR tomorrow!

  • I just like the name of this thread. Should make a shirt out of it (saw one on CafePress but only for men, WTF???!).

  • Nemo -- Love it! Love it! And love the idea of Lazy Jane's for pre-race lunch.

Heather -- give me a few days and I'll see what I can do.

  • @Beth- Sweet! See you this weekend maybe in Madison? I grew up in Madtown and I have never been to this Lazy Jane's, must find this weekend, need scone for Sunday morning recovery coffee/newspaper .

  • MOJO, I think of a dozen +EN guys supporting us on the run course, I think of EN sherpas volunteering on the race, I think of my friends tracking me live back at home, I think of finally being NOT tired, and finally getting to do all day what I love to do! I think of meeting all of you, I think of burning off calories, I think of the sheer agony, the pain, the torment, the mental battles and physical that Ironman brings, I hear the crowds roar, I see the course, I feel the pavement beneath my feet, I feel my heart beating and my breathing sounds strong, I am alive! I think of chicas flying in, I think of all of us in EN singlets, I think of prayer and meditation and focus on one thing, I ride because I love to ride, I run for the joy, I do Ironmans because of the journey.. and finally the destination arrives and no matter the outcome, I have traveled a road that could not have happened with your support! by now I know my paces, my strengths, my weaknesses and my health and state of mind/being and have come to accept all of that. I don the goggles, the cap, and swim with throngs of others, I clip in and tuck down low and practice efficiency, I practice being very smart, and very patient, I hop off my bike and transform into a runner! I close in on the finish line trying to beat it in before dark! and I feel the warmth of the tinfoil blanket wrapped around me and a huge heavy medal around my neck...... I am alive! m
  • So, my SO made me this card, and gave it to me on 10 days out of my big day, with a countdown. Every day, i open a small envelope, and in it I  find another quote. considering i'm not the fastest in ANY discipline, and was even doubtful i would ever complete this journey (getting to the start line, that is), she thought it would help

I thought I'd share with you peeps, and hope you enjoy them as much as i've been

    here goes:

T-10 - "All glory comes from daring to begin...." Eugene Ware

T-9 - "To accomplish great things we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan but also believe." - Anatole France

T-8 - "The 5 S's of sports training are: stamina, speed, strength, skill, and spirit; but the greatest of these is spirit" - Ken Doherty

T-7 - "Champions aren't made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside of them - a dream, a vision" Muhammed Ali

  • What a fantastic gift!! Please continue to share the quotes with us! I love T-7

    Thanks Hasan...very inspiring!

  • My mojo is I'm doing this for Trent Prough because that is one brave man!!! An he has inspired me!!!

  • Sheryl, I couldn't agree with you more. I just finished reading his post and although he is going through a difficult time, he once again was able to inspire and encourage all of us by proving how strong and powerful our bodies are and  what it can and will endure if we get our limiting minds out of the way.

I will be thinking of Trent and hopefully channeling some of his strength as the race gets tough this coming Sunday.

  • Ditto. Perhaps we need a new silly bandz in his honor or something to hang on the visor. Something. For sure I will get my Livestrong band out again, hate having to keep pulling that thing out for people; as our family friend Kristin says "Suck it Cancer!" look for her ACS shirt with that posted on the back on Sunday and know that she is one wicked bad-ass survivor. Stay strong peeps!

  • OMG- I'm behind. gotta go find the thread from Trent.
