Let's Obsess About the Weather

  • I'll be missing those pockets and am trying to work around it in my mind. Envious of the EN bike jersey. But if it's chilly, I'll have a vest with pockets anyway.
  • So....back to weather.....did anyone else notice that it looks like the remnants of Hermine will be hitting Wisconsin around the weekend???? Or should I just ignore that? image
  • Sheryl, if there's one thing I've learned recently, it's that you don't get too worried about what a hurricane might do until your within 48 hours. :-)

PS- Just finished packing and I said to Joe "hmmm, I only packed one pair of shorts, do you think that's enough?" His response "What's the 10 day outlook on the forecast" to which I said "I have no idea- I banned myself from looking at any weather reports". He gave me the "who are you and what have you done with my wife" look. HA HA HA!!!!!
  • Tuesday is:

    Partly Cloudy / Wind
    High 67°F

Wind: From WSW at 29 mph
    Humidity: 59%

I want August's Kona weather back!
  • Race day looks like a great forecast!

  • Martin- do you live in the race area? Just trying to get a feel for what it actually FEELS like there temp wise.
  • Michele,

I'm not in Madison, in fact I'm about 2 hours south. But I can tell you it FEELS cold. Saturday morning was cold enough that I had to wait until about 8:30am to ride and even then I was wearing arm warmers, I could have gone earlier but would have had to bust out the full fall/spring gear. Warmed up for a few days but another cold front came back through and it's pretty chilly again today. When these cold fronts blow through it is legitimate cold in the morning, exasperated by winds, but of course more pleasant in the afternoon and in direct sunlight. I don't think it will be near as cold as it is today on race day, but even if it was I wouldn't be complaining much by the time I was on the marathon.

Water temps are also coming down quick, I was out at 'my' lake yesterday and it was still warm enough I could have gone no wetsuit, but definitely cold enough to warrant one. USGS says lake Monona water temp is 67 today!

All and all though, I'm thinking its shaping up to be a nice cool day this year, hopefully not outright cold but cool suits me just fine thanks.
  • Thanks Trevor- that's what I thought. I am planning to pack more warm clothes since I think I will feel cold after the humidity here in MA. Is Lake Monona shallow? I'm surprised the water temp has dropped that much. We had nights in the 50s and the water temp didn't drop low enough to make me wish I had a wetsuit. Still not planning to bring full sleeve suit though.
  • I'm in Evanston, IL further east than Trevor and he's not kidding it's been freezing here. It was in the 50's Saturday morning for my ride - I wore gloves and toe warmers, knickers and arm warmers and was cold until the very end. The wind here lately has been brutal, this morning the gusts were (still are) ridiculous. Hopefully it blows through and we just have a nice calm cool sunny day!

  • The lake doesn't seem that shallow to me, it actually deepens up pretty quickly at least. At the swim start when you walk down the boat ramp you basically can't touch the bottom as soon as you leave the ramp. But the temperature does seem to change super rapidly.

Heres the USGS site I've been using for real-time hourly water temp updates, I have no idea at what point in the lake they are reading temp and gauge height though.

  • Yup! Packed my good arm warmers and bringing the throw away ones. Toe covers are with the rest of the gear. Thought those might come in handy. Guessing it will, at a minimum, be cold in the morning.
  • FWIW--and you can ask Marianne and Nemo--it was inthe 30s and whipping wind on the beach the first year we did FL (Did y'all know all three of us did the race together, did not know each other, and finished w/in minutes of each other?! Then we all ended up here in EN. image) That day in FL warmed up to the mid-70s. I suited up with arm armers and a vest, and that felt like a lot of friction. I wouldn't go too crazy thinking about suiting up with toe warmers, et al on the bike. Some disposable arms warmers would be good. Maaayybe,  an old disposable shirt or jacket. Better yet, just the arm warmers, then tough it out until it warms up--which it will. What are you going to do with all that gear when it gets too hot???? Sounds like a lot of "friction" to me.

  • DItto what Linda said. Change (maybe) into a dry top after the swim, arm warmers, vest, gloves. I was chilled @ Ari*ona last year for about 20 min, but it wasn't bad. All that frittering with stuff adds time quickly.

Essentially, Madison, but Sun Prairie is only 3 miles to the north. Today you can feel a little humidity in the air despite wind gusts up to 35 mph. It's a bit chilly at 62, but overall it's not bad. The wind will disappear in the next 12 hours and the temps will slowly rise through Friday.

I prefer hot and humid, and I think it feels OK outside. Race day should be a great temperature to race.

  • If it gets cold on the bike, I'm just stopping at Uphill Grind for coffee.

  • X3. I wore a vest, arm warmers, and toe covers in 2008 (where what they are forecasting now looks like what we had then). The vest got ditched before I hit Verona and the arm warmers got rolled down for the first loop and shoved in my SNB before the second loop. Like an idiot I forgot I had to toe warmers on until I was getting major hot foot problems! Duh. Those got tucked in a pocket. If it looks to be cold in the morning and potentially rainy, I may go with a light pair of smartwook socks instead of the toe warmers.

PS- I think Olivia was in Florida in '06 on that cold ass beach with us too :-)
  • I used arm warmers in 2008, no vest. I was a bit chilly at first but warmed up pretty quickly. Took the arm warmers off after about an hour or so. It was probably in the mid-60's at the bike start.

Think I have figured out the clothing strategy ( I have been obessing over this ):  Gonna wear a tankini type top with my zoot compression shorts under wetsuit.  Dry off with at towel stashed in my BGB....leave zoots on change top into EN singlet + sports bra + arm warmers.  I know I will be cold for the first hour, but the forecast says sunny, so hopefully it will warm up later in the day.  so Im sticking to this, unless the weather takes a turn.

Kathy- Not telling you not to, but, last year ;Ari*ona I changed tops after the swim. BIG pain in the butt to get a dry bra over a wet body. You THINK you can get dried off, but you really don't.

I am going with dry top in T1 bag and just keep on the wet bra.

    Just my .02

X2 I attempted that same game in 2008 - it was a LOT harder than I expected. I'll either wear the Tri Top under the wettie or have a dry top in T1 to put over the wet bra. Just will depend on how cold it really feels when I get to Madison.

I think looking at what the temp is gonna be in that first hr on the bike is the key. I am hoping to roll with throw away arm warmers & that's IT!!

  • I wear sports bra, and bikini bottom under wettie. Dry top over wet bra in T1. Bikini bottom, off and on to dry bike shorts. Works for me quite well. image
