IMAZ Wk 5 (& 7 to go) - Where are my peeps?

Hey everyone - how's the training going?  After 3 hard weeks, I backed off on Mon & Wed to get some rest.  In fact, I slept 10 hrs Tuesday night -- have felt good since.     Due to schedule conflicts, I'll be doing my RRs in Wks 5 and 8 instead of 6 and 9.  So yesterday I ran 17.42 miles, and this morning I swam 4500 yards.  The swim was 200 yards Warm Up, 4200 in 78 mins and 100 WD.  I'm not real sure about the swim because I lost count several times in a 2500 yard pool (down and back x 84).  I may have swam a couple of laps more but who knows.   I would be concentrating on my stroke, position, etc, and then - damn, was that lap 46 or 47??  It's mind numbing!   Anyway, tomorrow is my RR, and the weather is supposed to be GREAT!   A 'cool front' has come in dropping our highs into the upper 80s, but more importantly, we've got some drier air.  And tomorrow's low is supposed to be around 67-69.    I don't think we've had lows in the 60s since early April.  This might even mirror IMAZ conditions except it will be a little warmer at the start.

  • This week was pretty bad. Was in Philly and bad stroms came through on Thursday so it killed by long run day. Add to that havign my flight delayed and not getting home until after midnight, it was not a good training week. Did the 4.5 bike and 30 minute run today. Think I may have pushed a little hard, because I was shot for then entire rest of the day. Doing my 2 hour run tomorrow instead of the bike, to be able to get some time into my legs.
  • John - at least you got the most important workout of the week done. If you get the long run tomorrow, on top of tired legs, you'll have put some good training in the bank. Let us know how it goes.
  • How can you tell that you have too much stress on your body? Sleeping over twelve hours. So I had a little bit of a sleep in this morning. Then went and had breakfast with my lovely wife. Finally got on the road for my 2 hour run about 11:30am. The cool morning was going away and the sun was out with a vengence, but it was a beautiful day, and I was determined to enjoy it. Had to keep my mind on keeping the pace down during the warmup. Then moved into the interval set and hit everyone of the them perfectly in range. On the last twenty minutes of the run, picked up the pace to MP and just floated in. Great way to finish out training for the weekend.

Tomorrow morning is back to the airport at some crazy early hour and back into the mess for the week. Hope everyone had a good weekend and ttyl.
  • Keeping track of you guys as I need course recon information

  • Congrats on getting it done John! Do you travel every week...that sure makes it all the tougher. I can't top 12 hours of sleep, but anytime I get 8 or more, I feel a lot better. I'm trying harder this cycle to eat better and get more sleep. In another week, we are over the hump!
  •  Just checking in as your race support guy!  David Ambrose and I will be there working the water and T1 area and then out on the course all day following your guys around.  No pink Speedos for us, but we will be loud as hell!

Keep us the good work guys and gals

  • I have been feeling pretty good , a few days where I am dog tired but then again work, life, and a two year old contribute to that as much as swim, bike, run, repeat.
The strangest thing for me has been the days when I run 40 and swim an hour or so and then feel like I did not do anything and get panicky......I mean really?
So now I guess I only feel like I am gaining fitness murdering myself on the bike for 3+hours......EN and IM training has warped me.

@Paul: once again thanks for checking in on your peeps......am jealous of your 10 hours of sleep too.

@John P: I was also shot after the 4.5 bike and run and I was not travelling all week, did feel good the next day so that is cool.

@John S: no pink speedos, felling robbed!
  • @John S: no pink speedos, felling robbed!

You are funny.  But ain't gonna happen.  However, is there something you guys would like Dave and I to wear around the course?  I am open to ideas.  Pirate costumes?  Kilts?  Hula outfits with coconut bra's?

  • Feeling good and doing OK. Last Saturday I started out on my 4 hour ride and got an hour into it when I broke one of the arm rest on my aero bars. Advoided crashing but it was pretty iffy for about 2.5 seconds. I decided to forge on and do my best. I cut it short and only went 3 hours instead of 4. My neck and hands were killing me. I have new parts ordered and should be here and on my bike tomorrow (Wednesday). I took Sunday completely off and woke up on Monday feeling GREAT, like if haven't felt in months. Strong swims and runs so far this week. I am getting ready for RRs on Friday and Saturday, provided the weather is good on Saturday. If it stays dry, I should be able to knock out my RRs with no problems. Keep on truckin'!!

@john, keep the speedo in the drawer.  How about devil costumes and the obligatory cow bell.

  • bad weather in so cal has me switching this week's schedule, so i am about to head out for a 135min run in the rain.  this will be my first long run of the race prep, i've been mainly doing shorter fast work until now, but definitely looking forward to the long stuff.

prior to this week i was a bit distracted, but the motivation and focus is definitely back this week and it feels good.

best of luck to everyone this week and especially this weekend.

  • got in 12 miles this morning. I felt good, the run was fun, but I am NOT a fast runner. The run is definitely is my sticking point, but I working hard to get there.
  • I broke EN protocol this morning and went 19.23 miles in 2hrs 48mins. We are having an early fall and it was 56 degrees at the park where I run just north of the city...unbelievable! I run on a trail (dirt, sand, wood chips, or pine needles at various points) which keeps the pounding down and lets me recover fast, although it is a relatively slow surface. The temp was 76 when I finished...just couldn't pass up weather like this. I will bust protocol one more time in two weeks if the weather is nice, then start pulling the long runs back.
  • nice job of running guys.  my long run went well yesterday and the legs feel good today.

long day at work today, but at 6pm PST i'll swim and then indoor ride.  a nice end to a productive work day!!!

    keep up the recovery, Al!

  •  RR tomorrow - first time that I have the powermeter onboard. I am not even trying to figure that out until next week but it will be interesting to see what my average watts actually is. I remember hearing/reading something about "little peeps" and power and hope that we (little peeps who may at one time have intended to spend life as jockeys) don't put out much power generally. Rode with that meter last night and it seemed like I was consistently around 150 watts.  So Week 6 is coming to an end and I am thinking I might live through this. Got in that 4400 yd swim (yes - 88 fun and fulfilling laps at Golds) and did not drown. Old, slow, tired and jockey-esque', and just 6 more weeks to go.  I am your peep.

  • @ Chuck - I feel lame...only did 4200 yards (84 laps) last week. Was I supposed to do 88 for the RR swim? Keep up the great work!
  • Chuck - there is so much to training and racing with power, it is impossible to get it all straight in a short time. Two comments for now. (1) the number you will be most concerned with is Normalized Power, which is related to but different than Average Power. (2) Watts/KG is a  measure of relative power to account for differences in size and therefore muscle mass. If your w/kg is in the 3.0-3.8 range, you are within the range of most AG ironman athletes. This number is your FTP (normalized power produced in an all out 1 hour effort) divided by your weight in kg.

  • a couple of IMAZ RR are up in the Race Discussion board, check them out!

  • 1:18:23 for 3800meters in 50meter pool. So, frustrating!!!!!

    But I am notionally hope!!!

    Good luck to all tomorrow.

  • Meant to write: not losing hope but iPhone spell check wrote
That other weird word! Oh well. Better everything go wrong now
    Than on race day.
