Tuesday Workouts... Brick or no Brick?
I do almost all of my workouts in the very early morning since I have to leave ~6AM to go to work and need to get my workouts in before that. For me to do ~60 mins on the bike, then ~25 mins of a run I might have to get up with a "3" on the clock to get it all in.
Does anybody break these into a morning bike and an evening run or does this miss the point of the run (should it be done on tired legs)? I was also a bit concerned that I'd then be doing an evening run (albeit an easy one) then a fairly hard interval run early the next morning.

4:45 run
4:35 transition
3:30 get on bike
3:15 get up
6 a.m leave
5:30 hop in shower and eat in car!
4:55 run
4:45 end bike
3:45 start bike
get up at 3:30 a.m.
hmm.. I can see the problem.
or you leave at 6
get in shower at 5:25
finish bike at 5:20
get on bike at 4:15
get up at 4 a.m.
not too much better...so you lose only 30 mins of sleep and get in the desired run or
you wait to you get home from work.. hey you didn't mention your lunch hour...?? what are you doing then??? do you have access to shower cuz you guys can get ready fast.
but okay you get home from work at 6:30 p.m. and wind down by going out for run and back home at 7.. where you stretch and eat a bite and then get up next day for early morning run... yep you could try that and just keep it relaxed, just trying to get in the run frequency I believe and minimize costume changes.. one shower sorta workouts for time efficiency and also mental cost of having another workout hanging over you. This is a question that you can also post in "I need feedback for this week thread".. not sure what you do monday mornings but instead of rest day you could do that 30 min run then...
or get a different JOB!! m
You were close. A normal Thursday looks something like this:
6:07 leave for train
5:50 finish quick stretch
5:45 off the bike
4:45 on the bike
4:30 out of bed
I could prolly do the tuesday by getting up at 4:00, but for some reason my t1 (bed to bike) takes longer the earlier it is. Its just hard to get the blood flowing immediately after rolling out of bed. I've got the T2 down to a science.
I don't get a lunch hour (eat at my desk). I get home from work around 7pm, then spend 30 mins or so putting the kids to bed. So it would be like a 7:30 run before dinner. I might try the micro thread. I figured I'd try here first just in case many of you were already breaking this one up then I'd have an excuse to be lazy and sleep in.
How can you get on the bike within :15 of waking up?? I get up at 3:30 AM (really 3:27 because I get weird about waking up on round numbers) but my butt isn't on the bike until 4:10-4:15. Brush teeth, contacts in, eat breakfast, sit on couch wondering where I am...... I'm trying to do the workouts as bricks but it is tough to go from sweating like a pig to going out in the cold darkness.
And it is completely wrong to get to work around 6:30 AM and feel like you are late!!!
This borders on insanity!
Another thing to think about. As you get closer to IM, the workouts do get longer. I make sure I focus on work now, during the OS, so I can build up a solid reputation as a hard worker. I can cash this reputation in when I need a couple hours in the spring to make a long run. Kind of like the SAU concept. This is an N=1 thing, though, with my boss. He was cool with my training this season when I really needed to add a little volume. May not work in your job.
@Sheryl-- I agree, but no other options...
@Marianne-- I decided to do my run tonight, so your message was posted exactly 3 minutes before I even woke up. You're sick!
@David-- Glad to hear I'm not alone... I also have an hour or so commute. It was a big mental leap a couple yrs ago to accept getting up with a 4 on the clock... I really should drift it lower to get it down to 4:00 as well. You're a machine! I agree that 3:XX will not work for my psyche. I also need to go to be earlier as it's usually 10PM by time I get around to it. Too many podcasts, eBooks and EN forums to read on the couch at night!
